CATEGORY - PVP Draft Components
HIGH PRIORITY - Ban Phase

HOW

The ban phase will consistent of two intervals

  • Players have 15 seconds to declare one ban on any desired unit on the full roster per interval
    • __Bans will not be revealed until both players lock in a ban __
    • Refer to Marvel Rivals as an example of this implementation
      WHY LIKE THIS
      This specific implementation of the ban phase allows for a reasonable balance between giving proper power of choice while also allowing duplicate bans to occur to diversify matches. A ban system as a general concept is needed to provide stability to the meta.

HIGH PRIORITY - Cascade Pick

HOW

Basic Mechanics

  • Only one player will be able to use a unit on the roster if selected
  • Picks are visible to both players
  • Each player selects six units, and can freely choose between those six units ALONGSIDE their available farms to lock in their final lineup
  • However, players with multiple duplicates of the unit they are selecting must declare the specific copy of the unit they are using, locking-in the specific trait they are using for that unit on that map.
    • Player picks are revealed during cascade, but final lineups are not visible until grace period (described below)
      Coin toss to determine first pick in cascade pick
  • Refer to Brawl Stars as an example of this implementation
    1. Winner picks one unit first
    1. Loser picks two units
    1. Winner picks two units
    1. Loser picks two units

      WHY LIKE THIS
      Cascade pick allows for proper diversity in matches since each player will be able to have power in developing potential counters to the other player's picks, making unit selection a much more involved/engaging process. Picks should be visible to both players to allow countering to occur. 1:2:2:1 cascade should be used instead of 1:1:1:1 cascade because it also allows players to have power in actually building a synergistic comp, a reasonable balance between allowing individual pre-meditated strategies while also allowing opponents to generate counters dynamically.

HIGH PRIORITY - Grace Period

HOW

20 seconds after cascade to equip familiars on your final lineup as you wish

  • Refer to Brawl Stars for an example of this implementation
    Final lineup for both players only becomes visible during this period. Final lineups are chosen during the cascade where they are not visible to the opponent. Final lineups are not editable during grace period.
    WHY LIKE THIS
    Allows for that extra cherry on top of depth to the draft so that you can optimize your lineup to a greater extent. Additionally raises the skill ceiling of drafting as you have to have enough game knowledge to make the best possible choice to deal with as many contingencies as possible from the opponents pool.
CONCEPT: Map Pick And Ban

HOW

Basic Mechanics

  • Map Pick and Ban will occur before unit draft
  • 3 randomly selected maps will be selected by the game for a pick and ban phase
    • Each map will contain its own weather or other map-specific mechanics
      Separate coin toss to determine first pick
  • Winner bans one map
  • Loser bans one map
  • Final map remaining is the map on which the match will occur
  • Refer to Professional Esports from various titles or CS2 Premier for an example of this implementation
    WHY LIKE THIS
    Unique maps and a map draft, while not necessary to the basic pvp system, is a fantastic way to help foster the creation of multiple submetas/map-specific metas in a way that makes the mode much more replayable. Picks and bans also allow for players to have a good chance at winning, even if they do not have every unit unlocked, as they can set up pre-meditated strategies for certain maps and attempt to draft the maps accordingly.

CATEGORY - RANKED PVP OVERHAUL
CONCEPT - Best Of Three

HOW

Instead of 3 randomly selected maps, there will be 5 randomly selected maps in initial map pick/phase.

  • Coin toss to determine first pick, like before
    • Winner now chooses one map to save, effectively preventing the other opponent from banning it
    • Loser saves one map
    • Winner bans one map
    • Loser bans one map
  • Final map and the two selected maps are all used to make a best of three match against your opponent
    • Separate unit draft occurs for each map
  • Refer to Professional Esports from various titles or CS2 Premier for an example of this implementation
    WHY LIKE THIS
    Makes ranked matches much more involved than casual/standard matchmaking, and gives both players a fair attempt at trying to win the match. Reduces the viability of a strategy where a player might invest all their resources into developing a loadout for a specific map and "one-trick-ponying".

CATEGORY - PROGRESSION SYSTEMS
CONCEPT - Casual Ranks

HOW

Players will earn seasonal PVP mastery points for completing matches, more for winning than losing and more for playing multiple PVP matches in a row

  • NPC vendor for PVP will have a UI for a mastery progression track, which contains 10 ranks, each divided into 3 divisions that the player can level through by reaching certain master point thresholds
    • Rewards for leveling up to a new division within a rank include standard currency (gems, gold, essence stones)
    • Rewards for leveling up to a new rank include more coveted currencies (rr, stat chips, shards) as well as exclusive cosmetic options (i.e. a seasonal title, skin for a unit, profile card, etc.)
    • Players can prestige after completing the main mastery track to reset their progress for new rewards (usually redundant rewards like more gems, gold, rr, etc.)
  • Refer to Destiny 2 Crucible Valor Ranks as an example of this implementation
    WHY LIKE THIS
    Adds a sense of consistent, non-rng-based progression to certain rewards that rewards the player for continued engagement. Allows for a sense of accomplishment among more casual players who would not want to play ranked if given the option.

HIGH PRIORITY - Ranked System

HOW

Players can both earn/lose seasonal PVP ranked rating for Ranked matches, according to an elo-based rating system (I recommend simply implementing the Chess elo system)

  • NPC vendor for PVP will have a UI to display various information about the player's ranked career:
    • Player's current rank
    • Player's PVP career statistics
      • Highest ranked achieved ever in lifetime, along with label of which season that rank was acquired
      • Lifetime statistics (win/loss ratio; cumulative matches won, lost, and played)
      • Current seasonal statistics
    • Global leaderboard for the current season
      Ranked system to be divided into metal ranks (bronze, silver, gold, platinum, diamond), master, and (to the fit the theme of AV) paragon, with top 500 being crowned vanguard
  • Each rank will be divided into 3 divisions
    • 100 ranked rating needed to progress through a division
      Players will not get rewards directly from competitive, but instead receive mastery points like normal
  • Competitive rewards include a seasonal profile frame and title depending on the highest rank you achieved in the season, as well as 2 tiers of exclusive cosmetic/unit skin for reaching paragon and vanguard respectively
    Ranked resets upon new seasons
  • One reset should occur per season, dropping a player down 6 divisions from their highest rank from the previous season
  • Refer to Marvel Rivals as an example of this implementation
    WHY LIKE THIS
    Players who do not like playing more aggressively competitive modes should not feel compelled to play ranked. Implementing resets like this also allows for consistent progress to occur compared to a total reset, even if the player is not playing multiple matches a day.

CATEGORY - GAMEPLAY ADDONS
CONCEPT - Player Buffs

HOW

Concept #1: neutral enemies

  • Neutral enemies that will not progress to either player base will instead only be present on the map for a certain period of time
    • A player can make the decision to divert towers to damaging and killing the enemy at the risk of not being able to defend from the other player in order to receive special buffs or abilities to debuff the opponent upon killing the neutral enemy
      Concept #2: merchant NPC
  • Similar to the first concept, a merchant NPC will spawn periodically on the map, one instance per player, who will provide a random assortment of purchasable items to buff oneself or debuff the opponent at the cost of yen.
  • Notifications will pop up on the opponents screen when a player acquires a buff/debuff item, not when they activate them, so that they have time to develop a counterstrategy. This applies for both concept one and two.
    Concept #3: yen shop
  • A yen shop will be permanently available to each of the players throughout the duration of a map instance. Players will then be able to spend yen on items that provide buffs to the player progressively, with items being upgradeable, allowing other exclusive items to then be bought, etc.
    • The opponent will not be able to see the other player's gold shop build.
  • Refer to the League of Legends in-game shop (#3) and jungle (#1) as an example of this implementation
    WHY LIKE THIS
    Rounds out the trinity of skills that ought to be tested in PVP. First skill was the need for game knowledge through drafting. Second was the ability to efficiently progress your economy and upgrade units through the base gameplay. Third is the ability to be adaptive and utilize resources given to create impromptu attacks to exploit your opponent's weaknesses, which will be achieved through a selection of these various systems.

CATEGORY - IMPORTANT CONSIDERATIONS
Access to full roster

HOW

Players during the draft should have access to the full roster of available units. This does not mean that players have access to units they do not have.

  • Refer to Brawl Stars as an example of this implementation
    WHY LIKE THIS
    The other systems I have described in this post largely remove any issues with any one particular unit being universally good, and it is important to allow the players to have freedom in gameplay, as creativity is what makes a game fun.
Seasonal pools of unobtainable units for everyone to have available

HOW

A rotating selection of ~ 3 to 5 unobtainable units will be available on the roster for all players depending on the PVP season, regardless if they have obtained them regularly in the game or not. This system will not be present in ranked.

  • Refer to Brawl Stars as an example of this implementation
    WHY LIKE THIS
    With the suggestion above being said, giving players, especially new ones, an opportunity to tinker with units they would otherwise not have is a great way to make the mode fun.
Static values for familiars in PVP

HOW

All familiars should have a predetermined static value when in use during pvp. I have no comment on if randomly rolled familiars should be allowed in ranked.
WHY LIKE THIS
Familiar rng mechanics and familiar balancing in its current state will make it VERY frustrating to deal with god rolls.

Chess Elo System for Ranked

HOW

Ranked should use the chess rating system or some close derivative for PVP ranked.
WHY LIKE THIS
The system is provably fair and ideal for the 1v1 environment in PVP. There is no needed for engagement optimized rating systems or otherwise overly complex rating systems.

Static stat rolls for units in Casual PVP

HOW

All units should have a predetermined static stat roll of D for damage, spa, and range when in use during casual pvp. This will not apply to ranked.

  • Refer to Destiny 2's Crucible Control (Quickplay) gamemode for an example of this implementation
    WHY LIKE THIS
    The concept of adding seasonal pools for unobtainable units will require some predetermined value for the available units if the player does not have them. This change standardizes and stabilizes the sandbox. It also makes one less pain point for casual players to truly make an equal playing ground for all players. There should be a casual option for PVP, and this change allows quick play to be casual/plug-and-play.
