What if the chaplain could gain favor of different gods by building their altars and fulfilling their trials? Faith builds with each success. For example, the dragon altar could improve dragon faith by spacewalking without internals. As faith increases, resistance to cold, oxyloss, and pressure does too. As maximum faith, the space dragons make that chaplain a vassal, granting them passivity with regular space carps, the ability to speak carptongue, and have the space maneuvering abilities! The divine power radiates from the chaplain, allowing them to temporarily share that power with whoever they're grabbing, heal space-related damage and injury, things like that.

That's just an example, the rest of the altars would have their own arrangements!

I generally try to avoid it being combat buffs, because that's kind of boring and overdone. The chaplain is a religious leader, so it makes sense that the faith mechanics would be based around testing of faith, and shepherding the congregation.

the carp ones are pretty oriented, space flight without a jetpack is really really strong

but personally I've always been a fan of a faith system if well implemented
