The Idea Is Called "Mirror Paint"

A new kind of paint is being added to the regular paint tool. This paint does not just change the color of a block it actually turns any surface into a mirror that really works.

How This Paint Works

When You Make A Surface Reflective: If you spray a block with Mirror Paint it will reflect everything around it like the environment, other players and things that are coming towards you.

You Can Create A Cool Illusion: You can paint a wall to make it look like the room behind you which is really good, for hiding or making a fake hallway to trick people who are looking for you.

Mirrors And Lasers: If the game has laser gadgets or light beams Mirror Paint can make them bounce off at an angle, which is ninety degrees

Mechanics & Gameplay:

  • Reflective Surfaces: When you spray Mirror Paint on a block it starts reflecting everything, around it like the environment, players and even projectiles coming at you.

  • Illusion Tricks: Hiders can use Mirror Paint to make a wall look like what's behind it. This helps them blend in or create hallways to confuse seekers.

  • Corner Peeking: You can put a mirror block at a corner to check out the team without them seeing you.

  • Laser Bouncing: Mirror Paint blocks can bounce gadget beams or laser traps. This lets you set up traps or alarms in spots.

  • Destruction: If a mirror block gets hit by a gadget or a snowball it first gets a cracked look before it breaks.

Fun Customization (Cosmetics)

  • Frame Blocks: We can add border blocks, like gold, wood or neon blocks. These will let players build framed mirrors in their custom maps.

  • Cracked Mirror Effect: When a mirror block gets hit by a gadget or a snowball it will get a cracked look before it breaks.

I think a cracked texture, before shattering looks awesome on mirror blocks.

The Problem of Lag and How It Gets Solved

To stop the Quest 2 and Quest 3 headsets from slowing down the mirror does not show a time 4K picture. The mirror uses some tricks:

  1. The mirror shows a picture that's not very clear. This means the reflection is not updated often or it is updated at a lower frame rate, like 30 frames per second instead of 90 frames per second. This helps the headsets brain, the CPU and GPU from getting too busy.

  2. The game only looks at what's right in front of the mirror. It ignores things that're far away or hidden behind walls.

  3. There is a limit to how mirror blocks you can use. You can only put 5 to 10 mirror blocks in a map at the time. This helps the game run smoothly and fixes the lag issue, for the Quest 2 and Quest 3 headsets.

The Low-Res Reflections thing is when the reflections in the headset update at a resolution or, at a slightly lower frame rate. This helps so the headsets CPU and the headsets GPU do not get much to handle. The Low-Res Reflections are important because they stop the headsets CPU and the headsets GPU from getting overloaded.

I made a mirror a while back, it was 50% render scale, only rendered non static objects, had occlusion culling, and obviously only did anything when up close or on screen

You would think all these optimizations would make it run smoothly, especially because it looked like ass, but no… it still significantly dropped performance

Dropping the framerate would make the effect look terrible, actually… that second one would already be the case, putting a limit on how many blocks can be painted a color is a smoking gun for why this shouldn’t be added
