Lil Yeep had never meant to end up at a new school. One minute he was standing under his favorite blocky tree in the quiet fields outside his village, adjusting his tiny yellow cowboy hat with the silver stars, and the next he was staring up at the towering stone steps of Mossroot Academy. The building looked enormous compared to him, with tall windows glowing in the early morning light and banners flapping in the breeze. His long arms dangled nervously at his sides, fingers fidgeting together the way they always did when he felt unsure. Lil Yeep wasn’t like the other students he imagined were inside. He was small, pale lavender, wide-eyed, and shaped a little differently than most. But he took a deep breath, straightened his hat, and waddled toward the doors anyway.
The hallway buzzed with chatter as soon as he stepped inside. Creatures of all shapes and colors rushed past him—some with wings, some with horns, some carrying stacks of glowing books. A few stopped to stare at Lil Yeep’s big round eyes and extra-long arms. He tried to give a confident nod, but it came out more like a wobble. In his first class, Introduction to Elemental Gardening, he accidentally knocked over a watering orb when he reached too far across his desk. Water splashed everywhere. A couple of students snickered, and Lil Yeep’s cheeks warmed with embarrassment. He wasn’t trying to mess up. His arms just didn’t always cooperate in tight spaces.
At lunch, Lil Yeep sat alone under a spiraled oak tree in the courtyard, picking at his moss-wrapped sandwich. He wondered if coming here had been a mistake. Back home, he had known every path, every hill, every friendly face. Here, everything felt too big and too loud. Just as he was about to retreat to a quiet corner, a tall, freckled girl with leafy braids plopped down beside him. “You’re the new one, right? I’m Briar,” she said, smiling without a hint of teasing. She asked about his hat, and when Lil Yeep explained that it once belonged to his grand-yeep, her eyes lit up with interest. Before long, two more students joined them, curious about his stretchy arms and the way he could pick up three apples at once without moving his feet.
That afternoon, something unexpected happened in Transmutation Lab. The class was tasked with reaching a glowing prism that had been placed high on a floating shelf. Most students tried stacking stools or flapping their wings to get close, but the prism wobbled dangerously. Without thinking, Lil Yeep stretched his long arms upward, steady as branches, and gently lifted the prism down. The room went quiet for a moment before their teacher beamed. “Excellent adaptability, Lil Yeep!” she announced. Instead of laughter, there was applause. For the first time that day, Lil Yeep’s wide eyes weren’t filled with worry—they were shining with pride.
By the time the final bell rang, Mossroot Academy didn’t seem quite so enormous anymore. As he walked home with Briar and the others, Lil Yeep realized that being different wasn’t something to hide—it was something that made him useful in ways no one else could be. His long arms, his wobbly stance, even his starry cowboy hat were pieces of who he was. And maybe a new school wasn’t a place to fear after all. Maybe it was just another field to explore, another tree to stand beneath, and another chance for Lil Yeep to grow.
