I don't know how long the range should be though. I don't want it to be too much to dominate in PvP but it also shouldn't be so short that it completely fails at its main purpose (painting large areas)

Paintbrushes are very time consuming and this could help severely to cut the time wasted painting each individual block

First of all, I don't see how this could be any less time consuming than normal paint brushes, Second of all, there's a setting called quick craft that fixes this issue for the most part.

I don't think you understood the gadget then. you're not literally shooting a paintbrush. You load a paintbrush to set the color you want and then shoot paint in everything that you want. It takes cotton in Play Mode but is endless in creative

I think you misunderstood. the suggestion says you have to put the paintbrush of the colour you want into the funnel to change the colour. it's not free.
