You get a name tag write on it like a letter and slap a gnome with it and above it is the gnome's new name! This could also be used for friends to give them nicknames.

I literally said why tthis idea might be better
also you could make it so with nametags you can give nicknames to your friends
Also I feel like name tags make more sense then signs
When you place a sign it says the persons name that typed that
