People fear change, but let's see how it plays out

#

It could be that overall it has a negative impact on the community and our ability to provide help. If that's the case we'll review, but we'll have to give it a trial by fire first

It's perfectly suited for a help channel

#

The archive and search features are excellent

#

It's also mich simpler to manage notifications

#

Just get notified when your question has an updatr

tawdry jacinth
#

I do like the notifications better than threads, but I still doubt the discoverability

Forums make a lot of sense for this server.

tawdry jacinth
#

there's a reason we're on a real time chat platform instead of a forum

vagrant falcon
#

But that does not mean we cannot combine the two

#

The forums help organize the topics and questions

tawdry jacinth
#

and forums as they used to be had much better discoverability than threads or whatever this concoction is

vagrant falcon
#

And before they were all in a single place

tawdry jacinth
#

being all in a single place puts them in front of the most eyeballs

whole sand
#

throw away the bad shit and keep the good shit of both methods of communication

tawdry jacinth
#

I don't see how the topics/threads are "good shit" without the ability to search them and tools to discover them

#

when they're underused sure, there's only a couple

whole sand
#

that implies that the ability to search was better before threads existed?

#

the ability to search for information is slightly better, or the same in the worst case scenario

tawdry jacinth
#

no, it doesn't. it wasn't necessary

whole sand
#

it's not necessary now either

normal mist
#

Ultimately, like I said we'll monitor whether there's a net positive or negative impact

tawdry jacinth
#

everything was literally there. If a topic wasn't discussed in front of your eyes, you could've looked in the history or brought it up

#

now there's a third way of a thread being somewhere in the background and you being unable to find it

normal mist
#

It's still a new feature, who knows exactly how it'll pan out

tawdry jacinth
#

that's fair, by all means keep experimenting

whole sand
#

searching seems to work just fine

turbid girder
#

if it ends up being worse all we have to do is not use it so, rollback cost is low

tawdry jacinth
#

I'm just being sceptical and "forums bad" makes for a better thread topic than a balanced take

tawdry jacinth
#

with threads you have to look into it

whole sand
#

i mean its kind of the same for the old thing, except the conversation maybe was burried 100 messages ago or it wasnt

tawdry jacinth
#

if it was burried, it wasn't active

#

simple as

#

wanna revive it bring it up

whole sand
#

you can post to archived posts and unarchive them, and keep the entire context of the convo still..?

tawdry jacinth
#

idk, I really like the simplicity of a limited amount of channels

whole sand
#

ok, feel free to continue using #go-chat then

tawdry jacinth
#

goblin but the new shiny feature

turbid girder
#

proposal to rename #go-chat to #go sobpike

tawdry jacinth
#

now that's a forum thread I can get behind

idle rover
#

forum good, deep web forum bad cuz of lost knowledge.

#

blog posts best

IMO forums are much better suited to a channel like #community-showcase-archived than a discussion channel like #1019689910699032696

Sure they organize topics but it makes it harder to jump in mid conversation if you have a helpful input because you need to browse topics and find one to read first

normal mist
#

I see that as a positive. A reasonable title would give you an idea of what it's about, and the whole discussion is laid out without interference from other questions

spare falcon
#

Or random interjections with ‘solutions’ by people who don’t have all the context

tawdry jacinth
#

I think it's a mixed bag really, you get less bad answers but I would assume also less helpful ones. Using a thread puts your question in front of fewer eyeballs, for better or worse

spare falcon
#

Forum discoverability is much better than threads, thankfully

tawdry jacinth
#

it's still not as good as a single help chat. However as long as all the herders are looking at the forums I'm willing to believe the quality of answers won't drop significantly, quantity may suffer though

plain finch
#

question since this become the meta forums chat
how do we "suspend" solved threads?
it's going to hurt open questions if there's solved but not closed threads mixed in

spare falcon
#

Threads are automatically sorted by activity. Personally lurk in most of them and I assume others do as well. Lot easier to spot open problems. We are thinking about how to mark a post as resolved. This could be done using tags for example

plain finch
#

what about closing posts?
closed post are automatically "demoted" below all open posts
some random ideas that could potentially make this more usable
OP can do /solved to mark it as solved and closes it
every so often bot will "reclose" threads with solved tag
(if reopened because op wanted to discuss more stuff after marking it as solved)

#

(locking is also an option but imo not so much fan of these)

#

i think(cannot confirm as of now) that threads in forum do not get auto archived, unlike threads in text channel

#

never mind retract that, so "after some time without activity" it still will get automatically archived
actually no, i am unsure what this even does now i checked my server....
