The skill difference between ranks is so spread because of the lack of player base playing ranked
Here’s the problem, skill based match making isn’t skill based when there’s not enough players.
For instance:
a proton 1 is 80% chance not gonna be as good as a nuetron 1
In other games gold and plat are very close cause of high player base.

alot of players also dont understand if you have a higher rank on your team and actively getting more kills or damage than them this does not mean you are doing better than them.
If they play support or smokes for example if they are dividing gunfights up and making plays this does not mean because they are under you on the leaderboard that they are worse than you.
