I think it's just a cultural difference. Like why the people were moved just by granny singing and they all sang along with her. Or when granny was having dementia and crying about her son. Like those scenes felt off to me but then I rewatched a Chinese streamer play it and in Chinese and when they explained it, it made more sense. Family is just a stronger culture in Asian cultures.

I don’t consider myself 100% on certain items and some of these are from what I recollect, if there’s any mistakes anyone here can correct me.

The context is that they are not exactly super friendly with the Song dynasty in actuality — the Ember of the East cares for the common folk (due to own morals + kindness shown to them by Granny Turtle), but she ultimately wants to go back to Jiangnan and get revenge and claim her power back.

During this time Song coins were being made in copper while Tang coins were being phased out, but due to shortage in copper it caused a shortage of song coins in circulation, so common folk used Tang coins as substitute even though it was not allowed. The basin is completely fake by the way, and relies on the illusions created by the Ember of the East. Jiangnan knows that Song is building up its military and wants to reclaim its territory in the north, and also has its eyes on the south (where they are). So Jiangnan offers Ember of East a deal — she smuggles Tang coins into Kaifeng and gives to common folk, doing so would cause inflation and force the government’s hand — here the government has two decisions, open up the treasury, or confiscate Tang to curb inflation and let common folk bear brunt of shortage by confiscating said coins, thus decreasing morale and causing civil unrest

Kaifeng prefect spearheads the latter option, while emperor Zhao disguises himself as a commoner to see how common folk take it. The group kind of fans a peaceful version of a protest or revolution (apart from invading and blowing up the furnace) to show that the common people can’t take it, thus forcing Song to open up its treasury to alleviate pressure from the common folk

this effectively wipes out the money Song treasury was saving for military, thus delaying the threat of invasion (from Jiangnan perspective)

Shimmer of South (ruler of Southern Tang) fulfilled the payment YingYing gave him (the wine jar she stole from us) by explaining a bit about Aunt Han's past.

Aunt Han and her dead twin brother got adopted by the Liangs
They dressed the brother as a girl and make them entertain the Family's daughter as a gift.
Some interpreted the clues in Aunt Han's backstory as the twins were being prepared to be organ donor candidates for the young lady of the family who was very sick and that lady was young Qianye. When making an escape attempt, the Han twins were separated with the brother left behind.

The Liang's were later massacred. Aunt Han did try to find her brother but couldn't find him. Believing that he's dead, she erected a grave in Blissful Retreat for him.

Back to Shimmer of South. Apparently he's been orchestrating the whole Gold-Making Vessel fiasco in an attempt to destabilize Kaifeng and ultimately to break the Southern Campaign to Tang Kingdom before it can be mounted. Zheng E, Murong Yuan, River Master, Dao Lord, that ugly greedy minister and YingYing, all were part of his plans. The poem that the kids and Granny Turtle sung during the night is his poem, created to incite a rebellion.

Zheng E and River Master helped smuggle military grain out of the Granary into the NMW black market. While Yingying and Dao Lord smuggled Tang coins into Kaifeng thru the Ghost Market. People bought the military grain with the Tang coin, weakening Song's copper coin. And Lord Shi kept confiscating the iron coin, creating a situation for the common people to be stuck between poverty and starvation. Grounds for a revolt.
Meanwhile, Murong Yuan's betrayal costed the Song their flagship. With the economy, military supply and navy weakened, the Song should not be able to mount the campaign for a while.

I understand that Candy Lady (one of in-game story writers) calling Dao Lord "A terrifying man" is intended, bc they're mascarading as a male head of the sect, but those other journal entries seems like they're supposed to know, but have mistakes instead
