you dont chase a color when you reforge, you work with what you get during the process of unlocking the 5th hole, once the 5th hole is opened, you pick a color that has been saved, if you dont like any of those colors at all, then you lock holes 2 to 4 depending on what you got and the weapon type

thats why its cheaper to lock a good color first, that way no matter what the other holes are, the color is the most important part and you wont have to reroll more holes during the way to 5 golds so you dont mess up your pity stats

Each time you are at ~35rolls for a slot, go back to the initial weapon you liked and swap to it + lock and roll till that gold hits.
