Usually there's one quest that advances the story (the one on the main quest list) - if you don't do those the story won't advance. But some quests are tied to main story so you have to do the main story before you do those.

It does change automatically when you have the box of allowing it to automatically cycle in the map season settings.

I ironically turned it off because it was cutting my cutscenes to play the change in season cutscene and it was very disruptive.

You will notice that if you have it checked, the circle around the season will change into a timer, to show you how much longer the current season will run for before swapping.
