Work in progress, making it now so I don't forget to write for it (the current lack of information is also on purpose, for the time being)
New name! From Schadenfreude to Scheinheiligkeit's Spark!

what do you mean "schadenfreude" i don't understand and google translate neither

untold python
#

It's something like enjoying the suffering of others. Not sadism, it's more subtle and annoying than that

raven blade
#

Ah, a word that has no equivalent in other languages! Very interesting ^^ even if the meaning escapes me

#

after inquiry the concept is also known in my language, we just don't have a word for it, we would translate it as "unhealthy joy" ("joie malsaine" in french)it is not sadism because it is peaceful, where the sadist is active in the misfortune of others

untold python
#

Yes, exactly!

#

Basically, take enjoyment from the suffering of others, while not necessarily being the one who caused the suffering. It might be passive, but you can technically take steps to lead to their suffering without actually causing it. For example, in the great hall, I said the first session for Gwynthorns was free. It won't be my fault if Gwynthorns start paying for more and more sessions, increasing their stress and lowering their gold intake at the same time, until at the end, they realize they were paying for their own suffering rather than someone elses

#

In that situation, a sadist would just force the Gwynthorn to participate

#

So… Scientology for Elves?

untold python
#

Whaaat? Noooo, never, that would never happen!

gilded sentinel
#

The Gwynthorns would never fall for such a ploy. They know a Ponzi Scheme when they see one.

#

They break out into hives.

#

They’re allergic to wasteful spending.

#

As a german I have to ask why Schadenfreude specifically?

#

I get what you’re trying to do I think but the word literally just means "enjoyment of misfortune" nothing else

well it depends on how you want to approach this sect of spark worshippers and if you want to keep the name german

#

if i'm understanding your initial idea correctly you want it to be about inducing suffering through subversion

#

i'm also not opposed to the use of the word Schadenfreude as it is indeed a very special word but it would be more fit as one of the tenants of said religion and less as the name of the entire thing in my opinion

#

and i guarantee you that it will make us germans quite giddy seeing our language somewhere especially if it is used correctly

#

our rule adherence boners will be breaking rocks and we will annex the entire religion GigaElf

untold python
#

As someone who appreciates the use of language to befuddle and subvert, I'm happy that the Germans will be ever so ecstatic in their joy

#

In that case, what should the name be?

#

What would be a word that most people would think is positive, but the actual intent would be the negative meaning?

sullen sigil
#

Considering the context of the religion here that is hard in either german or english for me ngl

#

I‘m no linguistic expert so I’ll see if I can come up with anything that has a positive sound but a negative connotation

sullen sigil
#

I got might‘ve been able to find one that would probably fit more in terms of overarching fit but it’s not really all that positive sounding in german

#

Scheinheiligkeit which translates to hypocrisy or what I find more fitting here sanctimony

#

It does lean more into the wickedness aspect of schadenfreude though but it works with the subversion aspect since it implies the image of some pretentious prick trying to sell you his course and get you into his mlm scheme

#

At least to me

untold python
#

Hmmm. Sounds interesting. I'll use it

#

The Spark of Scheinheiligkeit! Definitely not the Cult of Sanctimony!

#

The Spark of Scheinheiligkeit! Definitely not the Cult of Sanctimony!

sullen sigil
#

I‘d suggest switching the structure around for it going from "The Spark of Scheinheiligkeit" to "The Scheinheiligkeits Spark" idk how that sounds for an english native speaker but it seems like the more natural structure for my german mind

#

It might just be me being nitpicky though so idk

untold python
#

No, if you said that Scheinheiligkeit means sanctimony or hypocrisy, then switching it would sound better in both languages. And in that case, it leads to even more ideas for it

#

The Scheinheiligkeit's Spark, or Sanctimony's Spark, or Hypocrisy's Spark! Definitely not a cult!

#

I'm liking this more and more now

sullen sigil
#

Glad my nitpicking could be useful peepoOkMate

We are glad to have one such as you as a founding member of our alternative to the mainstream Aelurans

#

shouldnt it be a faith?

untold python
#

Yes, faith, my bad. I always mix it up

gilded sentinel
#

It reads like someone was trying to say a long word that begins with an S and had a violent sneeze while saying it.

#

I mean it’s super unique and cool, but I don’t even know where to begin with trying to read that aloud.

sullen sigil
#

Well Schein is pronounced like shine, heilig can be pronounced like hay and lick and keit is pronounced like kite

#

That doesn’t mean they are translated as such just the words that came to mind sounded roughly like them

sullen sigil
#

shine-hay-lick-kite

#

It’s the best I could come up with for now

#

The ay isn’t quite the ei sound but it should be understandable for a german speaker if you try to pronounce it that way since it would be quite hard for a non native speaker to pronounce

#

We do have a knack for making words hard to pronounce

#

It's a shame we don't have CK2's cult stuff. That'd be great for this.

untold python
#

We are not a cult! We are a faith based profitable non-profit

static oriole
#

You know what I mean 🤣

#

So would this be like, a western European based faith?

untold python
#

It's an Aeluran faith. Why ever would an elf clan make a human based faith?

static oriole
#

No I mean would it be located in Western Europe.

untold python
#

Ah. Most likely, yes

#

Possibly in the Alps.

#

And has no affiliation what soever with my vendetta clan of elves. Yes, no affiliation whatsoever. None.
