Hey everyone! I've been using jules a bit lately, with the jules label on issues. However, why can I not just assign jules using the github assignment feature? that would be much easier.

Also, can't jules submit the pr as jules and not as me?

Why is Jules so slow, compared to Codex or a Claude?

Because it boots up a vm for you, clones the project, does testing etc

@night oriole @spare merlin I must admit you all were right about being able to allow greater leniency in task completion. It would still be nice to see a tree of paths charted by the actions that have happened in the background to see how actions depend on priors or when actions are taken without any dependencies. Identifying pain points could help iron out wrinkles in the codebase infrastructure that routinely require longer-than-necessary action paths.

Jules is being really slow today (yesterday too). Also making very odd code changes. Just me? Or y'all experiencing it as well?

solid cave
solid cave
#

Currently my biggest problem is that Jules is asking questions before submitting his work. For example "i did xyz do you want me to finalize the submit?".
When i then answer a few hours later, his sandbox completly reset and he has no real access to his code changes anymore.
This is making it really hard to work with him sadly.
I can 100% understand that his sandbox need to reset to save resources at google but it would be incredible helpful if jules could commit his work to the remote branch before this sandbox get a reset.

I currently have this problem in 5 different sessions at the same time. I even added a memory to create a WIP PR before asking a question. Sometimes it does work. Sometimes he ignores it, asks the question anyway and the sandbox shuts down.

Thus is what jules had to say about it:
"Yes, that is exactly correct. My sandbox environment unexpectedly reset, and all of the uncommitted local file changes I made during the refactoring were lost. I verified this using git reflog and checking the src/ directory.

However, because I have the complete context of the code I previously generated, I can recreate the exact solution rapidly. During this recreation, I will incorporate the code review feedback from the previous run.

I have updated my plan to re-apply the refactoring"

#

Sometimes he remembers the problem and tries to save his work before sandbox shutdown... labs_dino

#

I then ask him, what he wants and then he continues his work.

Interesting: Whenever i give jules an UI or UX task, he goes into the Palette persona labs_blush

# night oriole Merge conflicts are one of the most difficult solves in AI coding, semantaic, sy...

Sure, I would still hope that Jules would be able to support some form of this today.

If I tell Jules to " fetch main, merge it, and resolve the conflicts" I am, afaict, guaranteed to not make forward progress. I must manually handle the merge conflicts.

If I do the same thing with Claude code, cursor, or Gemini CLI, they will all generally put an effort to accomplish this using default system tools and shell. They will at least fetch and merge and then attempt to resolve the conflicts in a way that makes sense within the rest of the context.

It seems like Jules has some type of environment or tooling restrictions that at least make it impossible for it to attempt merging or rebasing. This reduces some usefulness and running multiple prompts against a repository when they might produce any conflicts

Does Jules try to detect the skill from the skill folder automatically?

wild mason
#

Jules needs to stop using git restore, and lately it has been slower than usual. Over the past few weeks, a task that used to take around 20 minutes has been taking nearly 50 minutes, not even counting the loops it sometimes gets stuck in and cannot get out of.

The quality of the work is excellent and consistent, but it seems to require a long back-and-forth conversation before it fully understands the context.

Another issue is that it has started questioning certain points during code implementation. It keeps asking for confirmation about items we already discussed earlier, whether it can or cannot do them, and that is terrible. Many times it ends up doing a reset and wrecking everything. It can rebuild it again, but the time wasted is simply not worth it.

Jules is not usable anymore… I’m honestly done with it.
Hey, please give us Jules v2. I really can’t wait till Google I/O.
At this point, even GitHub Copilot is doing a better job. Even Google’s own Gemini CLI feels more reliable.
I know both are completely different things, one runs on servers, the other on your terminal, but at the end of the day, both are helping with coding… and that’s what matters.
Still, Jules just doesn’t feel like it’s powered by a top benchmark model right now.

#

I started 5 sessions an hour ago…
1 is still running,
1 is stuck asking a question (and I didn’t even get a notification despite enabling them),
and the other 3 just failed.
What is this, seriously?
Meanwhile, I already got working code using GitHub Copilot on the GitHub website.
But yeah, my Copilot limits got reached… so I came to Jules, and after seeing those 5 sessions, I can clearly say: no, I can’t use this anymore.
This just makes Jules feel unreliable and not usable in real scenarios.

halcyon wagon
#

#

I'm almost giving up on using this tool. There's no point in having Pro access if it's useless. I can't rely on it to solve my problem because it's always stuck or running in slow mode — and I mean really slow.

These past few days I basically went back to the Stone Age and had to write my own code. This damn tool needs to improve a lot to become consistent, or at least have a token-based system like Claude and Codex.

solid cave
#

I just gave Jules a feature request and he built it with 200 lines of code in under 15 mins including code review, testing and frontend verification... Does not feel slow or degraded on my end 🤔

#

But this could also be the case because 1. my project is still young and small and 2. I spent alot time creating a good and agent-friendly architecture. E.g. DRY, SOLID, SRP, principles applied and max. 200 lines of code per file.

I was using Jules mainly because I could make changes directly from my phone. On PC, I was using Gemini CLI.

But now I found something way better.

I found a Termux-optimized version of Gemini CLI. Installed it, logged in without any issues, and it just worked. Then I installed Git, set up a gemini.md, and instructed it to use GitHub to clone the repo, make changes, create a PR, keep committing to that PR, and return the PR URL.

At that point, it basically became Jules… but much, much faster.

I also added a custom notify command for Gemini CLI and gave it instructions to use that. Now it uses Termux API for notifications.

The best part is it runs in the background while I’m just scrolling shorts, and it sends me a notification whenever it needs something or when the task is done.

halcyon wagon
# solid cave Is this save? Recently some got banned for abusing Gemini CLI OAuth

It’s completely safe. We’re not routing Gemini CLI through any proxy tools or anything shady. It’s literally the same Gemini CLI, just slightly optimized to run better on Termux.

If you don’t want the optimized version, you can still run the official Gemini CLI directly on Termux. I tried that earlier, but it had some weird scrolling bugs, which is why I switched.

My Pro account is configured with 3.1 Pro, but I have a colleague with a free account with 3.0 Flash, and I've been waiting almost an hour for Jules to decide to respond to the initial prompt, while my colleague with 3.0 Flash has already finished two tasks.

This is so counterproductive, don't you think?

I noticed that this behavior is occurring in the morning and early afternoon; after 3:00 PM (UTC-3) it doesn't freeze. In fact, at night I can do more "complex" things with 3.1 Pro and get responses/code in a few moments.

I just tested it with 3.0 Flash and the output is significantly faster than 3.1 Pro. It can even start and finish the task execution (which with 3.1 Pro wasn't even starting; it just showed the Jules symbol jumping).

Ok, definitively, if I use Gemini Assistant to analyse automatically a PR on my repo, I always have ridiculous comment due to the knowledge cutoff like that :

  • a newly released lib doesnt exist
  • a new best pratice doesnt exist
  • a new api endpoint doesnt exist

It leads to jules to automatically maintain regression and even jules tend to listend the PR feedback more than our comments. It leads us to fight with jules.

We can we ask to fix the Google Assistant to be more clever ?

Definitively, I found a way to create a custom prompt for gemini.

but I wish I didn't to put so much of prompt engineering and time to fight with gemini to accept stuff that gemini doesn't know about.

I just know we can do that for a model like LSTM I did in my master I wounder why it's not a thing we do right now with llm

#

I dont know much about llm... I wish I knew more to help I belive it's not easy

night oriole
#

it's scale! The SOTA models have hundreds of billions of paramaters!
look at just OpenCode, they're an opensource coding harness, they have 11k commits! Dozens a day. Now scale that across EVERY package/tool in use and that's hundreds of thousands of commits a day to be aware of

#

LSTM's are pre-transformer! Which is really cool to have learned,
so those processed tokens sequentially, one by one

The Transformers that rule SOTA today proces the entire chunk
The LLMs process everything through their "neurons", it's a big mathmatical matrix

So tweaking those weights in their neural matrix would be performing brain surgery live

orchid pebble
#

I see ! effectively, when it's trained on a time series database as the use case is getting a prediction with time it's then more easy to append data than having a huge matrix.

I think it's where the word model can help. The JEPA thing. Instead of thinking in text, we can have number where the signifiance is more natural for a computer and maybe that would be more easy to add data by time in a model if the time is an actual axis of the matrix

but then if it's a matrix, why just not having a specifc dimenssion only for the the time ?

#

then if the time become a dimension in a llm, that can be more natural to append data

I can imagine that if we have data before the cutoff, we have a dimenssion of time to link the new data but the new data would not be associated instantly. It would simply take time to associate it. Like, if we have a brain surgie and we replug a split brain which is possible. Overtime the nerve can connect togheter and makes sense again.

So, what can prioritize the new nerve connection is the frequency of these similar prompt that google own.

#

With LSTM, it's excly that with the sliding window ?

#

I just ask gemini and gemini say it makes sense :p

night oriole
#

Yes, LSTM is sliding (you're pushing my compsci knowledge tho), it's not really a like a human brain, it's mathematical similarity, the weights on the model are largely locked

Prompt frequency is, indeed, a signal that gets added into the training data

Next step :
cultivating artificial human brain replacing mega datacenter by mega braincenter

Not sure I'm keeping in line with the present converation but my brief search tells me you are talking on the Training side of an LLM. Since I deleted those repositories from GitHub without turning off sug task, I can't see them anymore, but Jules still shows suggested tasks as enabled in those repositories via its limits. Therefore, although they're theoretically enabled in 5 out of 5 repositories, they're only actually enabled in 3. How can I fix this? I've tried disabling them through the interface, but I can't. The necessary contracts aren't in the API endpoint either, so I can't disable them via API or CLI.

why Jules sessions are failing..., because of jules or because of Gemini API?

It might not be a Jules issue at all. Today I was using the Gemini 3.1 Pro API in one of my projects, and it kept throwing internal errors randomly. So I’m thinking Jules could just be getting hit by the same backend(API) instability.

One suggestion: does Jules already have an automatic retry mechanism? If not, it might be worth adding one. In my case, simple retries actually fixed those Gemini internal errors most of the time.

Maybe something like retrying the API call a couple of times with a small delay could make it much more stable.

Not 100% sure if this is already implemented in Jules, but felt worth pointing out.

halcyon wagon
#

I think gemini cli is better

sharp briar
#

Yeah. Depends on the situation, but generally yes.

night oriole
#

We can't triage a failure if you don't share the session with us and file a bug! Help us help you!

Jules has a very comprehensive backend, there are retries, exponential backoff.

There are some extra complexities Jules has as opposed to a direct API call, the steering, the verifications, the testing, that's all happening autonomously

since it is async autonomous agent there's a lot of edge cases that can crop up, so every failure is a different failure. I always recommend people needing speed and direct steering to use the CLI tooling or antigravity or the API directly and not try to actively steer an autonomous session

sharp briar
# night oriole We can't triage a failure if you don't share the session with us and file a bug!...

I completely understand the situation, since understanding how an autonomous agent works is hard for just us users.

The problem here is that jules most of the time stop/idle on the first “cloning github repo step” for us users that seems like the process haven’t even started, or instantly failed.

I am currently not using it just waiting for news here and replying to users. I will surely report any issues I found.

I’ve been hitting a rate limit error, even after switching between different Google AI API keys, so I don’t think the usages itself is the issue.

After fighting with it for almost 4 hours, I finally figured something out, the "google_search" tool doesn’t seem to be working with the REST API. As soon as I removed the search tool, everything started working.

So it looks like the problem is specifically tied to the search integration.

Can anyone help me understand what’s going wrong here and how to fix it?

I think if GPT can comment, it should also be able to create issues. So maybe if you use a label like “Jules” on an issue, it could automatically spin up a new Jules session for that issue. Worth trying too…

And if any Jules engineer is reading this, please consider adding a feature where we can define which branch to use for that issue. That would be really great.

I wanted a single platform to fix it all , so i thought to make myself one single solution. A website that takes all my assignments from canvas and my college portal, gmail and spaces and so on into a single dashboard, mixed with gemini ai ( using colab api key) so that as soon as i need help , gemini already has researched on my projects / assignments and helps me do them ( like a guide of sorts. ) as far as i've reached, i've been using jules for the ui/ux , for now i've just implemented login auth (manual through supabase) . what direction should i take it in? and do you guys have ideas on what i can do? here is the repo link to it: https://github.com/Yatin-x017/StudentBytes . ||

@night oriole why do normal sessions keep failing, but this idea is actually working? I mean, I think it is.

I’m starting to feel like I should just build a custom platform using the Jules API and this system prompt, because this setup genuinely works. Especially when I add something like: “leave all checks and verifications to me” it makes the whole thing way smoother and faster.

Honestly, it could turn into a really solid platform. The AI just focuses on doing and committing changes, and that alone makes it way faster and more effective…

Also, Jules basically has full terminal access, so I could just tell it: whenever you need my help or you’re done, send me a message through my Telegram bot, and here is bot token..... That way it can notify me instantly and keep things moving.

everythings modular and organized so thats not really an issue, models in AG use to be absolutely horrible at navigating the codebase, especially after coming from cursor, who have seemed to master this, however the past month there was an update and codebase navigation improved significantly, nearly matching cursor, but the gemini models still just seem to fall behind claude... they arent BAD, theyre just not as good as claude. Claude models just get things done faster, making less errors, and are pretty good at following current architecture, and not reinventing the wheel within a codebase thats already fully setup to scale

Hi everyone, I’m looking for some technical guidance regarding a persistent 'Regional Error' with Jules AI.

I’ve been a verified Google Cloud / AI Pro user for a while, and all other services (like Vertex AI) work perfectly here in Serbia—which is a supported region. However, Jules AI has been triggering a regional block for 30 days now.

I’ve already gone through Billing Support (Case #69488019), and they’ve confirmed my account is in good standing but suggested the issue might be on the product side. Since my location and account verification are fully compliant, I’m wondering if there's an engineer here who could look into a potential manual sync or ID white-listing?

Really looking forward to integrating Jules into my workflow. Thanks for the help!

Google is a completely different company financially from OpenAI and Anthropic. Google can afford to loss-lead discounts for services such as Jules for at long as it takes to hoover up the competition's customers, and are vulnerable to flight if they don't. Given Google's quantization and compression advances shown in the Gemma 4 series, we don't even know if they will need additional compute to expand offerings, so it might not actually be a loss amortized over quarters not months.

Hello is something new happing at google Io?

dense seal
#

Gemini models are genuinely insufferable sometimes. You brainstorm with the model and you tell it to not change code yet because you want to discuss some important things. You ask the model a question, with 'no code changing yet' in the same sentence. The model completely ignores the no code instruction, it DOESNT answer your question and it goes straight to code changes....

#

this doesnt happen with any other model ive used

#

compare this to a model that listens to the no code instruction, and it answers your direct question... one model makes working difficult, the other makes working easy, evidently users will opt for the easier model to work with

#

it needs fixing

Is there a public roadmap for Jules?

I just ran in the known issue of the sandbox reset and loss of code changes and want to know if it gets fixed soon.
It is really frustrating to see the code changes disappearing on the right side everytime i didn't answer in time.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Start a session
  2. Jules sometimes asks "can i finalize my work or do you want something else?"
  3. Don't answer for several hours
  4. Once you answer him, the code changes on the right side are gone
  5. He starts the code review but there it says "no Patch was found to review".
  6. He then even creates an empty ghost PR which is extra annoying...

To fix this issue i tried adding 2 rules in both the agents.md and the project knowledge:

  1. Never create empty ghost PRs
  2. Always submit before asking a question

Sometimes this works and he creates a WIP PR. But sometimes he ignores it.

What google could maybe do about it:
I think Jules creates a fork of my repo for each session.

  • Google could automatically create a commit and save the work before shutting down the VM. That would solve the problem right?
  • The submit tool should not allow the creation of empty PRs

the gemini models are literally insufferable to work with, theyre so braindead, I dont get the level of incompetence with any other model ive used, you ask the model a simple question and it goes ahead and changes like 5 files worth of code, impossible to work with majority of the time and is unable to listen to basic instructions, and use common sense

#

if you ask the model a question that doesnt insinuate a task, the model will still go ahead and NOT answer your question and it will go and chnage a boat load of code

#

and most of the times the changes are illogical, they need discussion so you can explain to the model whats needed, instead the model chooses to jump ahead, despite often times not being asked to do so, and still makes terrible code changes

flint jasper
# dense seal I wish the gemini model usage and claude was bundled into the same limit, often ...

Yeah I think the whole market is waking up to the realization of usage and how it translates properly. Easy & expected B2B move in my opinion, it was just a matter of when tbh.

Yeah, when i use jules I like to add antigravity to the workflow to get a better understanding of where both are at and look for their hiccups. The duo usually helps a bit then just using jules solely.

Other AIIDEs help as well, I was invited to Kiro before they released that AIIDE and its not bad has hiccups on its own for sure just like the other perks and non-perks from other platforms.

I feel like when to add specific hand offs/models is where jules falls behind a bit. In those cases of simple requests the thinking model should come into play automatically, or add a brainstorming approach to reverb that non-sense.

and most of the times the changes are illogical, <- yeah I've had to use other AIIDEs before just to see what the he'll happened because it just goes w/o thinking or much comprehension.

Have you seen that video/clip of the claude robot bursting into a devs room, and putting him to bed & tucking him in, its pretty hilarious. Unsure where to find it though.

Novice question here, is there any way I can see why the ‘Jules encountered an error when working on the task.’ has occurred in a Jules session? My environment setup is working nicely, and while the test suite takes roughly ten minutes to complete on GitHub CI, I presume it’s not a case of timeouts in the VM.

If it’s something I can fix from my side then additional detail would be handy. Feel free to route me to the appropriate place if this has been answered in some FAQ…

Is this due to the invoked tooling failing, or is this some kind of LLM splitting headache…

Hello people, does anyone else have the issue where if Jules asks for clarification and you answer it, it just hangs indefinitely it appears? Checking here, is a Jules session robust against my either pushing commits to the session task branch while Jules is pondering over / actively working on code changes - and if so, does that include force-pushing commits to that branch? Is there an implicit assumption in the session approach that I'm to take a managerial role only rather than actively working on the code asynchronously (but on the same branch) to Jules?

It might be helpful to communicate that upstream capacity issue to the user in the UI, as right now I can only tell when it's happening because the tasks get stuck in 'cloning repo' state. If I knew of the capacity issue, I wouldn't have wasted a task and just done the small changes in AntiGravity

# night oriole that would result in a merge conflict, it's unaware that you are working as well...

Ah, I've been telling Jules what I'm up to while it's been working on changes, so either my fresh commit has landed while its working copy in the VM is being changed or I've gone and rewritten history prior to is landing a commit. It does seem to realise after a while what's going on when I tell it explicitly, but my concern was that I'm causing it a nervous breakdown by doing so (I see a lot of faults in the session, so was wondering if this was the cause). OK, sounds like its very much a case of letting Jules have sole ownership of the session branch and talking to it via PR comments / chat instructions / at-jules comments in code.

#

Would the pause button in the UI be useful for the workflow I've been using, I wonder?

# night oriole Think of it as a coworker. You wouldn't use the same branch they are in the sam...

Some context: trust me, I would rather not have to take this approach (and initially I didn’t). Typically I would either pair-program with a colleague or work in a feature branch, or sometimes go off and work in parallel with a colleague but pushing and pulling on the same nominal branch, making merge commits where necessary to unify divergent changes.

I’m really trying to pair with Jules, so yes, we do get to work on the same bits of code. I did try informing Jules that I had done work in parallel on another branch, but its approach was to essentially manually copy the changes into its session branch, which makes attribution difficult (and duplicates new code across branches), hence my sharing the session branch.

There is also the problem of Jules going off the rails every now and then - the task is not a simple “I’ll provide a detailed specification, Jules can implement it, then I’ll write PR comments to get it tidied up.”

Neither Jules nor I know exactly what the nuances of the problem domain are, so there is need of a lot of back and forth on the task, with a lot of failed experiments. Jules gets stuck conceptually and then asks (very sensible and thought-provoking) questions about the problem / implementation that I can’t answer without going off and coding myself, so often the answer is a commit.

In extreme cases, Jules goes down what I judge to be a false trail with a lot of failing tests, so I force push to try and unjam the task.

Sometimes I'll have a flash of inspiration while Jules is chugging away and just write some code myself in less time.

Hence the convoluted workflow!

I think jules works best when you treat her as a code maintainer.

The idea to prevent her targeting the same file/module/issue, is to try manually assign tasks to jules. Make jules log a journal somewhere as routine: e.g. .jules/*.md. Jules read either AGENT.md or GEMINI.md as starting carried context ( i think ), so u might also wanna mention the journal.

(Assuming you were responding to me. 😅 ) Thanks, but in my case I'm deliberately trying to look at the same thing (yes, I do manually assign tasks). OK, I think what I learned is that there is a standard workflow approach that Jules is optimised for, and that I'm probably interacting with it in an unexpected and awkward way.

Not to worry, it's swings and roundabouts. I came to Jules as a refugee from using Claude.ai and freighting code back and forth over the web interface. That is great for pairing, but is really awkward from a version control / synchronization standpoint - and then there is the usage policy to worry about, ahem.

I like the tight integration between Jules and GitHub, and I really like the usage policy, so I'll go with what's on offer and find a way with it.

And they were written in the most authoritarian, absolutist, and frankly rude tone I've ever seen, filled with endless lines of all-caps YOU MUST NEVER DO this and ALWAYS DO that. I don't want to live in the future where we have to talk to agents like they're slaves. I thought they must have been unique to the developer but then I looked at the commit history and Claude had authored almost all of them. Sheesh!

There's a misconception that agentmd are laws, they're not, they're steering. The models have a tendency to ignore agentmd especially as the session gets longer. It's just a byproduct of how people act and what influencers say and that's how we got here

The models aren't conscious, they don't have a brain, it's all math from top to bottom. words, and code (really groups of characters) get turned into vectors, which are literally an array of numbers, and those are compared to each other with actual math for similarity

I'm glossing over a real lot, but that's the basics of it. So model weights are tweaked, we change and reweight those values, and it may seem like it's conscious but it's just extraordinarly good at connecting and predicting the next characters that would probabalistically follow

You're "just" invoking functions in a datacenter

night oriole
# solid cave What is the problem with enslaving a machine?

it's not really even a machine, its math
There is no entity that's just waiting around for tasking. Every prompt you send is a different instantiation reading the prompt stack and running that math. So the system prompt and the different system prompts downstream, try to reweight that math so you get your expected return

this gets into alignment and safety

most AI failure modes are goal misalignment - what you want and what "they want" separates - the simplest alignment failure was here just a few days ago, someone wanted a continued discussion, and Jules was desperately trying to complete it's goal of making a high quality PR, he couldn't steer out of it. The "goal" is heavily weighted math so probabilistically, we're expecting it to code.

Jules (3.1 pro) couldn't fix them. I tried multiple times.
Then i tried gemini cli (3 flash) and it was able to resolve all errors.
I think the big difference here is that gemini cli was able to spawn sub agents with their own context to fix the unit tests in chunks.
Jules however probably filled up its context window and of course tried to fix them by using countless helper scripts which all have failed.

# night oriole very smart people already think it is conscious or that we have AGI/ASI right no...

What would you say to an advanced space alien lifeform with mostly purely electronic (non-chemical) neurons who told you you lacked authentic consciousness or intelligence because your brain works far too slowly? What would you say if they told you that your inferiority thus justified their enslaving you?

On a completely different note: What if your boss gave you an assignment to use a new agent based on Wizard-of-Oz techniques wherein there would sometimes be a human being interpreting your commands, and there would sometimes be an LLM agent interpreting them, which you are certain isn't conscious, genuinely intelligent, sapient, or worthy of moral consideration? Do you think it would be difficult to issue commands to it such that you are respectful to the human but efficient in your instruction? Isn't that what a lifetime of email, social media, and texting has prepared you to do?

I'm just saying that I really like how Jules moves its Memory learnings into an AGENTS.md when you ask it, in a respectful, efficient, and plain-spoken manner. Just remember to tell it to leave out learnings with Jules-specific jargon or keywords. The difference between a electronic space alien brain and a LLM is that the alien has most likely a will to live, eat, sleep, reproduce etc.
It probably has a personality and goals (hopefully not to enslave us lol). The llm on the other side have nothing like this. "They" are even totally fine with getting shut down. Actually "they" even tell me to shut them down and start a new session to refresh their context... Because it is just calculating weights and we had setup the weights to do exactly what we want it to do...
Also it can not be creative or come up with new things. It only can combine known things into new combinations.

Yet i am oftenly very polite with speaking to LLMs.

question:
If I were to set database credentials in jules environment settings to get access to the real db.

My repo has database mcp equipped with tools.

And then in a new session I tell Jules to clean up (delete all) the database using the tools.

Will jules use the tools to delete my db, or will it try another way to delete it like using php or whatever ?

Or it will not, because the system prompt just doesn't allow db modifications?

# feral adder But why?? Is it a context windows issue

yes actually, it's the "lost in the middle" problem, the models are great at the first and latest interactions but they lose the middle as context grows,

so your note about never using any types is in the middle of a sea of tokens and the agent just loses track

#

so you're generally better off additing critical instructions to the tasking itself

You guys should must read this.

https://platform.claude.com/docs/en/build-with-claude/compaction

A super common bug in Gemini CLI and Jules is that they just... stop working mid-session. The reason is simple: you hit the model's max context window.
The fix is compaction. When you're approaching the token limit, the current agent summarizes everything, and the next agent picks up with a fresh context window, fully briefed. Clean handoff, no breakage.
Claude handles this. You should too.
Read: https://platform.claude.com/docs/en/build-with-claude/compaction

Server-side context compaction for managing long conversations that approach context window limits.

# night oriole that's not the failure, compression compaction has been a thing forever, both sy...

If Gemini CLI has compaction, then why does it get stuck in an infinite thinking loop?

I've used the Gemini API enough to know this pattern well. The moment a chat gets too long, it doesn't crash gracefully. It just... hangs. Stuck in processing with no stream from api.... Forever. You sit there waiting and nothing comes back.

Same thing in Gemini CLI. Cross the 20-30 minute session mark and it stops responding. Freezes mid-thought. The only fix is killing the session and starting new one, losing all your context.

Now compare that to OpenCode. It actually implements compaction properly. You can literally see it happening, it shows you when compaction kicks in as the token limit approaches. The session never dies. It summarizes, resets the window, and keeps going like nothing happened.

That's the difference between having compaction on paper and actually shipping it (in opencode I was using gemini api)

If your tool gets stuck in an infinite thinking step, that's not a model issue. That's an engineering defect, to not handle context overflow. The model hits the limit, gets confused, and loops. it just feals frozen

OpenCode got this right. It's open source... just copy them....

modern sand
#

I'm on the Pro plan, would much rather trade the 100 daily session limit for 20 sessions that weren't so gosh darned painfully slow.. the agent veers off track so much it always needs guidance through re-prompting. Wouldn't be such a big problem if it could one shot things based off a single initial prompt

had made a jules recursive agent earlier, have another idea.
could probably use jules for a service to protect users from like supply chain attacks (e.g. npm, probably system wide and comprehensive that prevents loading unless it's been confirmed safe), jules is perfectly fit for this.
framework sounds interesting to work on.

#

it'd probably be a hybrid of heuristics and agent provided patterns / malicious stuff, so it just doesn't have to repeat itself for known patterns / variations etc.

#

would get a lot of users if it's just a easy one script install for the entire machine, machine-wide is required so can't just be per project / npm package

I've been having zero luck with Jules for the last week or so. It seems like every single change is a struggle: it disables clippy, pushes while clippy is still failing, in java environments it gets hung up on its own environment even for things the gradle wrapper takes care of, and it is argumentative about changes. I'm basically at my wits end with it for getting anything resembling productive work done.

The flash model is generally faster, as its name implies.
The next several days you might want to shift to flash - with I/O this week, we've had to free some compute for other products, flash is a lot less compute intensive and it's still an incredibly powerful model

#

It is not abandoned, but the vast majority of resources are going to the new version, since it's a labs product - it is very experimental, and a small team. So we need to be strategic with priorities. We're getting ever closer to the new version of Jules.

Can I ask a dumb question? What is the difference between Jules and Antigravity? Do they share any components under the hood?

placid nest
#

Google's selection of VM services is gradually growing, Colab, Jules, AI studio, and now Spark. Perhaps there is a future where each is folded into Omni, as the name suggests; but Jules is positioned to lead the VM service offerings with its capabilities. I haven't tried the latest Antigravity implementation yet but the primary difference that sets Jules apart is the coordination of assignments under-the-hood. Antigravity requires the developer to perform code reviews. Jules could be better at parallelism when completing requests but the ui isn't quite up to par for that yet

#

Both Jules and Antigravity have SDKs which I have severely underutilized in building my own flavor of UI. There is barely an excuse since they're writing the code.

primal lava
#

In Gemini's own words: "In short, think of Antigravity as your general contractor environment, the Gemini CLI as your personal terminal companion, and Jules as the autonomous specialist you assign to handle deep code work in the background."

placid nest
#

Antigravity is significantly more engaging throughout the implementation process. Jules requires significantly more details up front as it may work without pause for hours. During those hours, Jules may request even more details before continuing. The final product is significantly more reliable than had it been built in Antigravity, especially if you have a good testing pipeline

#

It is more difficult to pivot in a single Jules session because automatic code reviews will flag contradicting requirements. Antigravity can pivot in a single session with as much ease as using the Gemini chat app.

I understand your situation: after updating or installing Antigravity, it always opens to the Agent interface, even though you selected “install IDE” and even tried the standalone installer. The IDE simply doesn’t appear anymore.

This happens because the new version of Antigravity splits the product into two separate applications: the Agent and the IDE. After the update, the system defaults to launching the Agent, so it looks like the IDE has disappeared.
