Welcome to the #jules-general・🦑 channel: Jules is an experimental coding agent that helps you fix bugs, add documentation, and build new features. It integrates with GitHub, understands your codebase, and works asynchronously — so you can move on while it handles the task.

  1. Go to jules.google.com and sign in with your Google account (accept the privacy notice, one-time)
  2. Jules needs access to your repositories on GitHub to work so click “Sync GitHub account” and complete the OAuth flow. Feel free to choose all or specific repos that you want to connect to Jules. Then, you will be redirected back.

More details can be found on our documentation here: https://jules.google/docs

If you’re looking for samples of real-world use cases to test, here are our templates: https://github.com/google-labs-code/jules-awesome-list

Excited to hear what folks think – send us any and all feedback in-product or in this space. Happy coding!

just got access , so treat my thoughts as literally first impressions.
my feeling is similar to codex - full projects require access to APIs, databases etc. so it's always going to be limited to what the agent can do within a sandbox. I think Google is in a unique position, with full Google cloud infrastructure, to simulate full projects, and allow agents to operate on all components.
other than that, just a small funny thing so far, but this is classic problems with LLMs, not having the naming up to date (most human coders can't keep up, so no shame in that 😉 )

Makes me wonder whether wouldn't be a good idea for Jules to create a feature branch for each task before any code changes are made, then implement changes in that branch, rather than try to connect to the repo after the task is marked as completed.

There’s so much potential with Jules. And the interface even at this early stage is really nice. I already used up my 5 uses for today and can’t wait to use it on the regular. It was so nice firing off separate chunks of tasks against my GH repo.

There’s a lot of potential between Gemini and Jules as they currently exist. Especially if Ai studio or the main chat portal are enhanced for programming and coding tasks.

I think the main frustration for me is it lacks the workflow i really value with cline or augment code, where you can have the code edited in real time and then check and see what it looks like on local host, at least if it's a next js project. I vibe code since vibe coding a thing, and what I found is that specific agent modes / prompts are really important. For example in Roo; The Architect first, then Code, then Debug, and main while telling the agent to maintain documentation. Then when task done, update the rules if needed.

#

Also what would be really good, I don’t know if Jules do that, but actual web search for the documentation if the agent faces issues. MCPs are really helpfull in that case or just copy pasting a bunch of text from the docs, but it could be awesome if the agent would look it up by itself when needed.

I've had some luck starting new chats, I've had to be somewhat clever about it sometimes (going in the html and copying the previous chat/planning when a previous instance locks up halfway) but it usually works. hey guys! i'm Giacomo, co-founder and CTO at a startup in climate tech, super excited about jules and coding agents in general to boost engineering teams.

would love to see the following:

  • custom docker images to be used in the environment where the repo is cloned
  • extremely higher rate limits, ideally unlimited. there's a real scarcity heuristic with 5 tasks per day, we found codex to be really valuable because it's virtually unlimited at the moment under a pro subscription, so the team can throw any task, no matter how little.
  • possibility of choosing the model (e.g. some tasks might be better assigned to gemini flash vs. pro or future SOTA models)
  • ideally standardize on AGENTS.md for reading? getting a bit out of hands with all the custom directories / files where agents are supposed to look at before starting

To be clearer - an idea I would really love is having

  1. The ability to put in env variables in a task (I think thats sensible for now, they shouldn't be universal, but maybe there should be project level grouping, with tasks living below)
  2. Being able to essentially preview branches based on what was created by jules - or at the very least, a sandbox localhost deploy I can interact with, and even better if jules can puppeteer it as part of its own testing feedback loop

# junior ledge Interesting. Can I know more about jules? I'm a bit new to it

it's an async AI coding agent! you hook up Jules with your GitHub repo and give it tasks. then, jules will provision a VM and actually build your repo, and work through the prompt. There are two nice things about this workflow that's different than an in the IDE:

  1. you can send a ton of things at once - in the IDE, you're typically working on one thing at a time. With Jules, you can send a lot of things at once (as soon as our infra clears up)
  2. you can do things in parallel - Jules can work on a different set of features on the same code base at the same time while you code too

We're working through a waitlist right now but you should still give it a try!

yes, kind of! this is where it gets slightly tricky (and its something we're working on!) - but when you start a task, we take a clone of the repo. Because of how we handle the github token, the agent isn't able to do git fetch/git pull. So as long as there aren't any other commits that happened outside of Jules, you should be able to contine

But if there were other commits, its best to start a new task

Is there a "time limit" on how long I should wait to see if/when Jules works on your queued task?

violet juniper
#

Will we get an option to cancel tasks? I think part of the reason servers are overloaded is because people have all kinds of failing tasks running or queued without an option to cancel it. I cannot start any new tasks because I have 3 tasks running that are stuck and do not do anything anymore.

fresh pebble
#

The queue is big, nothing to do but wait

glacial salmon
#

First time trying this. Curious if the publish branch is working as expected. With the load it took some time but jules seems to have completed the task I wanted it to do, but publishing branch doesnt seem to work. The loading spinner engages (I've left it for upwards of an hour) but when refreshing its not showing engage anymore, and nothing is publishing. Not sure if this is the load or if its actually a bug.

teal dock
#

Okay I have a big innovative idea, what if the queue was like, a stack instead? And then you had a semi-random way of popping things off the stack? Biased towards people with better tasks?

I don't know, maybe this is why I'm not a senior SWE, but didn't this work for the undergrad that discovered a faster way to search hash tables than O(n)? Or some variation thereof.

shell marlin
#

Hi all - so I'm trying out Jules and have a couple questions.

Firstly, it seems like generally the output is quite limited, is there some relatively low token limit in the background? If so, is that due to the initial beta having limited resources to account for bottlenecks/high usage? Is there some info on token limits/will this be adjustable in future?

In turn, is the use-case moreso small tasks/modifications to codebases for the time being rather than e.g. implementing/modifying existing features.

somber thicket
#

Well she's been out for 2 days, so far she can make whole projects but the slowness makes evaluating her performance difficult

#

Also, she has the power to stray way... off course

shell marlin
#

Yeah, I noticed that it's significantly faster to just prompt something like claude 3.5/3.7 and get a pretty decent oneshot (or just manually iterate). Not agentic ofc but claude code comparatively can make larger sweeping changes than what I've seen from Jules so far

#

Assuming it's just early teething issues/due to crazy load since it's free ofc

keen raptor
keen raptor
shell marlin
#

Does Jules have access to code execution/web browsing etc out of curiosity? Aka is it using a fully fledged Gemini 2.5 pro model in the background with a secondary model to iteratively prompt it, or does it have limited features compared to Gemini 2.5 pro?

shell marlin
# keen raptor yup, it has code execution and web browsing! if you give it a url, it'll use the...

Nice one! I'm playing around with it and noticed that even if you prompt it to run/test the code prior to creating a PR, even if it errors out/tests fail it still shows you the the 'publish branch' option and the execution output is buried somewhere in the message so it's easy to miss.

From a UX perspective maybe it would be good to have some sort of measure of success (aka code compilation result/results of unit tests) and then there could be some visual indication of this? Maybe even some icon to indicate that the code failed to execute so you have that context prior to committing.

#

or even like a red/green outline for the text box (if code was executed) or similar, indicating the outcome

keen raptor
shell marlin
# keen raptor do you think you can send a screenshot of what you're seeing/thinking?

Sure. So I'm just playing around with it and was seeing if it could make a basic platformer via pygame since it can execute python. At the bottom right here, there was a 'publish branch' button (can't see it now as I prompted it afterwards), and you can see in the highlighted text (had to scroll down a little - the execution status wasn't visible in the initial view) that the execution failed.

So my thoughts are that if an execution failure like this occurs, there should be some visual representation of this, especially considering a lot of people will be lazy and not fully read the output message before clicking 'commit changes' which can be a bit risky in certain cases.

There's a couple ways of doing this. Ideally it would be something like a red version of the publish branch button, which when you click it leads to a popup saying 'execution failed due to {error reason}, are you sure you want to publish?) or similar.

keen raptor
#

oh! i see! yes, we absolutely need something to explain what's happening

#

we have an engineer working on this right now - should hopefully have an update soon

#

thank you for the screenshots, super helpful!

shell marlin
#

Sounds great! Would also be nice to have toggles for basic/the most common requests, e.g. 'Unit tests', 'Code Execution', 'Web Search' etc. Which would basically just be a lazy way to force-trigger those features/add a few lines into the prompt without having to explicitly prompt for it.

When Jules generates commit messages, it ends up saying things about removing pieces that it itself added (because I told it to remove them again). ah, it's a pre-existing shop of sorts made with laravel + filamentphp

Good day, Jules team and Devs,

How have you been finding Jules so far? Since the beta opened, I'm curious to hear how you've seen adoption progress within the community.

I've been testing it myself, and while there are still areas for improvement, I've found it quite helpful—especially when guided by a developer with clear direction.

As we know, adoption is key to the success of any technology, and even though it’s still early, I’d love to hear your thoughts and expectations.
Do you believe Jules will continue to grow and become a more significant part of Google’s developer tools portfolio?

🚀 All systems go! 🟢 (xposting from https://x.com/julesagent/status/1925945321852465290)

We're back up and running at full steam! Our queues have been cleared.

If you've started a task a few days ago and it's not working, please start a new task. We're seeing much better success rates on newly created tasks.

A few things we shipped recently. We've:

  1. Improved our queuing system & provisioned more compute
  2. Made the "publish branch" button much more prominent
  3. Fixed a bug where the agent marked itself as complete without any user input
  4. Fixed a ton of UI bugs in desktop and mobile

A few things we've heard from you all:

  1. Feedback timer is way too short
  2. GitHub export has been a bit buggy for some folks
  3. The web app is a slow for very tasks with large diffs

We're actively working on all these things. Please keep the feedback coming!

Anyone else having problems getting your repos to appear in the repo list?

I just signed up and jules and start the process to connect to Github, selected the org and picked 3 repos I wanted to connect. It told me "the process is done, window will close in 5 seconds", but when the window closes there is still only "Empty repo" in the repo list (also tried refreshing).

On my part, I was restricting Jules to having access to 1 repo, attempted later to add another repo (had to do it twice) and after that my second repo appeared after a refresh (did attempted refreshes earlier though but that didn't help at that time)

So it's solved after a bit of hassle
