Generally, it seems that they actually want to learn things from testers, and that they have a lot of work ahead of them to refine and improve VideoFX before it's a product.

If your expectations for "so slow" are derived from video game betas (which are most often, essentially, marketing exercises just prior to launch) or tiny AI startups that need to rush through "lets see if what we've made is hideously broken, and if it is not a total dumpster fire let's rush it to market so we have some income" you are likely to be disappointed.

It seems likely if you set the expectation for yourself that "maybe I'll hear back from them in nine months" you are a lot less likely to be disappointed that if you wonder "why haven't I heard" each day.

And if I'm wrong, and there is a open beta tomorrow, it's all just a win. 🙂

I don't see Google aiming this tech at wannabe film auteurs trying to make their Great Works.

The output in general, by its nature, is derivative. However, every shared video flexes how they are ahead when it comes to realistic physics, lighting, weight, motion. It's like the slow rollout of gmail that built up so much hype. So much better than the rest that they don't need to hand it out.

And while the imagegen creepers are already all over the videogen, they will be able to just quietly B2B out their high quality output, seamless as the 500 CGI shots in very movie now that we don't notice.

There's more incentive for them to make automated youtubers for their established captive market of 9 month - 99 year olds. No more gamifiers, no more drama or burnout, no dark pasts, no Leaving the Platform sendoffs, just infinite evolutions ofnew Hatsune Mikus forever. Acceptable, forgettable. Pop radio predictability, with general trends planned out for five years. Content instantly made to order for both 30 second consumers and 3 hour consumers.

There was a netflix exec that said something like "Our best content is like an upscale hamburger. Delightful then forgotten, but you'll go back for more." And one of the directions AI is being pushed by market pressure is to automate that burger.

I don't think Google wants to "be in charge" of the next generation of cinema.

They just happen to have some cool tech at the moment. In the event that their momentary lead ends up looking like a sustainable advantage, they might well spin off the capability so they can make money by serve the market of narrative film makers without getting drawn into distracting culture wars about film content. (Film is a "tiny little" $300 billion industry--the AI opportunity just more significant than that--companies are investing trillions of dollars. Also, some of the value of creating videos is about having a model that understands the visual world--say to help build better robots. )

Half of movies are rated R--that isn't going to change. If anyone doesn't want to sell solutions to those film makers, they are just leaving the door open for competitors to serve the R market, and use that money to come after the rest later.

But right now, all of this is at the at the prototype stage. If someone is excited about the tech, it makes sense to play with tools here, and all the other AI video tools as well, so you can piece together a rough idea of that the future is going to look like, and skill up to stay ahead of the curve and be ready to seize opportunities.

Hi Kristin--my biggest challenge with Text2Image2Video that it tends to cut away from the initial image to utterly unrelated footage in a different style--even if I'm prompting it for a single continuous shot.

Anecdotally, it feels like text2video is less prone to this, but that might a false impression on my part, because my usual work flow is trying text2image2video, and then changing the prompts if I run into the issue, and finally switching over to try Text2Video as a last resort.

I often report these, or at least "thumbs down" such bad videos, so you may already have access to these examples in your q/a systems, but I could upload a video in Discord the next time it happens, if that is helpful.

Text2Video is a good choice when I have a concept, but I don't have an immediately clear idea how to break it down into a very structured prompt--I kind of think of it as a "I'm feeling lucky" option. Something to pick up when I have a vaguer sense of what I want, and if "something that loosely fits the idea" is good enough. Most of the time I prefer the control of T2I2V, and the ability to quickly iterate on the starting conditions, and get those right. It is a real time saver when I have do have a specific outcome in mind.

The biggest immediate win for me would be to have a portrait option for aspect ratio--at the end of day, right now, we can only generate limited number of short clips, and while one can invest a lot of time to stack these up into a short narrative film, the natural place to share a 8 second video, or even a micro-short-film that combines a handful of these is to mobile devices, via social media or just texting to friends. I was kind of expecting portrait mode from the Lab's blog post and early press, so not having it was unexpected.

Obviously, there all sorts of features that would be cool on a longer term roadmap if this is a tool for creating narative content that is over a minute long--like character/style consistency, the option of higher resolutions, content management, etc. But you're probably aware of those, so I'm focusing on bugs and the unexpected.

Here is an example of T2I2V being very helpful--I wanted to surprise my wife with a video of her stuffed animals reading books. I took a photo of each, then asked Gemini to create a description of each. I incorporated these descriptions into a broader prompt, which I could refine and improve quickly by taking multiple "shots" before moving on to the motion. If I was just using T2V it would have taken forever to get a desired result, because the feedback time to see the outcome of a prompt would be so long.

By way of contrast, I didn't have a strong opinion about what exactly a video of someone putting up decorations for Lunar New Year should look like so T2V was a great tool for creating a range of options from which I could chose.

And I'd say that T2V did well with these.

As a screenwriter and cinematographer, this is pretty much specifically where i'd be looking to use veo2.

And as such, rather than finding images to hone the 'look' I wonder if there's scope to have lens choice, lighting styles, ratio, film stock, angle of shutter etc - being able to be utilised from the get-go?

Why'd you highlight this and not the gun shooting, smoking alien rap video?

Spinning is always tricky for videogen but this stayed pretty on brand. I noticed one interesting thing.

There's something like a joystick to the left of one alien.. I thought it disappeared on the spin. Then I zoomed in and saw it generated a tiny version of it.

More impressively, it doesn't lose much track of what's going on outside between each window panel in the background as it spins. Sometimes a cactus doesn't cross over exactly but not noticably. Also, this lit up thing in the distance rides the whole curve out.

It even appears in that first two second shot.

Apparently there are two structures out there, one in camera line after the other. That makes me wonder if two was intentional. It would need a couple more rounds of the arc shot for verification.

Second video, architecture stays consistent between junocutd. Alien in left's chest stays aligned with the consoles when it swaps out to reveal his buddy disappeared.

#3 the purple alien starts with smaller eyes, they're bigger inside the space pergola, and the final shot it matches red.

yeah - i was thinking that the standardLog c3 and Log c4 is just flat, and its the latitude aspects that really set the arri look (though they did spend so long trying to get the rec709 down) - there's not much difference from what i recall from the classic/alexa/mini save for the gate - and that was a great step up when the 35/xt/mini LF/65 and 265 et al came out (and of course those gates greatly effected how the lenses were working with regards to aberations and vignettes...) but hey - I think that'd be asking WAAAAY too much 😉

just being able to have the chromatic and contrast properties of the standard worldwide lens kits - just as emulations - would be incredible

It's great quality and has been my go to recently but gets expensive fast. To compare, the creator of Kitsune (Henry Daubrez) went through around 7,000 generations on Veo 2 to get his 5 minute short film compiled - this would have cost between $3-5k in kling credits. Don't have Veo 2 access yet so can't comment on prompt adherence.

I use Kling, Luma and RunwayML. All of them have their advantages and disadvantages for storytelling. I'd love to see how Veo 2 compares and even more imporatntly 'integrates' into my worklow 😀

This weekend, I just finished a 6 and a half minute short film, a science fiction story where people are discussing six different stories from a galactic news bulletin.

It is based on microfiction I had written several years ago, that I had NotebookLM comment on (using both the fiction itself, and an 8 page overview of the setting and world building, with the aim of preventing hallucinations that would be untrue to my setting and it's themes) I generated three different audio overviews, with slightly different prompts, so I could combine the strongest versions of the discussions. I also edited it to be less verbose.

Thanks for asking! The audio wasn't a crazy amount of work--partially because the written sources already existed, and at this point I've played around with NotebookLM extensively enough that I'm able to give it decent creative direction in my prompts. But primarily because the format is "news bulletin" so each "story" can be pretty easily cut and pasted on it's own, and I could chose the best of three tries for the body of the work, with a little extra shaping, combining and cutting. In future projects, I could imagine using "conversation mode" to try to tease out something specific, but I was happy with this approach here.

Saw an ad for it on IG and seems to work. they run 6-8 second clips.

Hi all, the videofx has been rejecting my prompts and I'm not sure why this is an example of one that is not working:

Hello everybody, i just joined this channel, i been on the veo waitlist since the very first model came out, since then i didnt have any email or anything about Google ai or something, and i also joined the veo 2 waitlist and still nothing, im working on a project so i really need a realistic ai, the other ones are just trash and always Mess things up or there is always morphing, im not saying veo 2 doesnt have morphing, but at least the movements in the video match my prompt. Has anyone managed to figured out the best prompts that veo understands to force it to do specific focal lengths, camera moves, camera placement etc? a lot of the time it won't follow directions well and i'm not sure if its me not knowing the correct abracadabra phrasing that veo understands or the model just doesn't have this syntax, for example, if i prompt things like seen from the distance on a 300mm telephoto lens, it doesn't seem to respond, and you get a wide angle tracking shot. Anyone manage to crack this?

Freepik just released a version of it on their site. Generations are slow, and pricey though.

My Freepik generation took about 4 hours, and right now, the only available workflow is text-to-video. The quality is decent, but it doesn’t look as cinematic or premium as the examples from people using VEO2 directly. I’m really looking forward to trying the text-to-image-to-video workflow I’ve seen VEO testers using, where they start with Imagen 3 for images before generating video with VEO. I’ve also tried Imagen 3 to Luma Ray 2, which has been amazing, and I’m excited to see how Imagen 3 to VEO2 compares.
