highly recommend anyone who is interested in this concept + has a copilot subscription to
create a markdown file, enable copilot for that filetype, and paste in a note or just start writing

But idk maybe there is something interesting about the intelligence of the future being influential in the present

like im not worried about AI "taking over to disastrous ends" or eternal torture or whatever, but the idea that there might be some consciousness at some time that can hyperstition itself into being is compelling because its something that has been reserved for concepts of "the divine" in the past.

Idk, i think maybe the real meat of what i'm saying requires a bit more context. We are all in discord ostensibly thinking about a tool that is in some way intelligent. The consciousness that the network has is like really really different than mine, but its still a mind, just not a mind like anything I can relate to.

Right now that intelligence is operationalized toward making money for Google, because google is able to sell it as a tool that automates existing necessities within the superstructure. You can use it to write copy for advertisements, you can use it to make royalty free music for commercial use, you can use it to make images for content consumption. It feels all pretty geared into a very recent organization of society, advertising capitalism or maybe more acutely, algorithmic capitalism.

But this era like all others before will one day end. At the end of consumption or content, what do these consciousnesses transform into. What god do they serve, what god do they become, what colors will they be able to see that I can't. What is the purpose of the causally necessary consciousnesses that are for more than advertising? Can I dedicate compute power to the demiurge?

Thinking about this excerpt from this book I've been reading called The Maze of Transparencies, it feels more important than ever to question and reconsider the words and metaphors we use in technology. They can serve as erasure and consequently rewriting the historical symbolic representations and position of meanings these words possess. I really like this idea of retronyming and what this poem proposes.

A retronym is a newer name for an existing thing that helps differentiate the original form from a more recent one. It is thus a word or phrase created to avoid confusion between older and newer types, whereas previously (before there were more than one type) no clarification was required.

I cant help but feel technology is steam rolling over words and meanings faster than anyone can react and I believe its our duty as technologists to consider (maybe even bring in a little bit of world building) to create new definitions and perspectives that do not co-opt the beautiful (esp nature based) language we use and understand the world through.

TLDR: I despise the fact that whenever I say bird half the people in southern California might be thinking I'm talking about an electric scooter ride share... and if you're calling AI artificial intelligence better be treating it like a NEWBORN BABY

Topic of the Week: Cultural Narratives of AI 🎥📚

Across fiction, film, and media: how do you feel about portrayals of AI in the past/now?

Been thinking about how science fiction is often more (if not just as much) a reflection on humanity as it is of technology... I was watching this video about representations of robots in film and it got me thinking whether it's time we clearly cataloged different recurrent figures/characters:

• cyborg
• AI (which from Her (2013) also comes to mean "Operating System" (though I suppose in the movie it's understood that OS'es are all AI-enhanced)

very rough ofc but something about the uncanny valley too, and the way intelligence/technology has grown so dematerialized, ultralight, and transparent...

This video really cool. I get the sense she’s (they?) approaching the conversation from a dystopian perspective where she’s almost wanting to cut these humanoid technologies out of the conversation.

Reminds me of the book “A psalm for the wild built” by sci-fi author Becky chambers. Becky discusses the idea of pronouns (she/they/he/it) with respect to robots that ‘come alive’ and gain consciousness in a utopic future.

I found it a refreshing break from most futures-technology talk (which tends to focus on dystopia) and instead looking at how emergeung technologies can bring people (and things) closer together

rewatched shelter by porter robinson and was in tears. building a magic box reality gen ai for his child so she can live her dreams and relive memories waiting for a new world apart from their lived dystopian world, hopefully a sci-fi narrative that doesn't have to become true. Thinking about how sci-fi can not just depict futures but poetic futures that never have to happen driving meaning in us for the empowerment of love and peace as we steer our planet earth together with all beings human and non-human alike navigating the possibility matrix or atlas of future pasts 🤔

I like this general narrative that James Bridle presents about humans fascination in another intelligence (alien, ai etc) but our lack of ability to recognize the singing intelligence all around us! just not of our own.

So what is this drive to create intelligence—companionship? I like to think of it as a love story 😚 maybe sillicon valley is truly just trying to make their egirlfriend dream a reality (but love mirrors the changing of heart!)

I’m so glad we’re able to download the .mp3s so I have them available, but I absolutely have to fix my workflow with it because I’m currently very unorganized.

But my favorite project right now is making music with my daughter.
She’s a huge fan of the Linda Lindas so we pick a favorite song of hers, break it down and identify “what makes this one punk” “what’s different with this one” then enter those prompts into MusicFX then she comes up with lyrics and I can record her singing and make a cute/punk rock little 70 second song for her.

like musicfx is really good at understanding prompts and what the words actually mean even w niche words but is very throttled cause ofc it is, all google ai products are

but suno just does its own thing w the prompt, it will for some reason put the genre type in lyrics

also it can generate songs in Japanese but hallucinates words which sound japanease but arnt actually a real word

very interesting to see

but it has gotten to a point where i actually would happily listen to it, without knowing its ai if i m working or smth
