It's hard to imagine that everyone would have their own EnemyAI
they all use enemyai but its heavily modified and the AIIntervalTime is doubled so they only get updated every 0.5 seconds rather than 0.2
and they all have power level 0 so they dont mess up spawning with other monsters
I plan to optimize it more in the future
I most likely will use 1 main rat to control the rest or they will be controlled by the nest
or the rat king will control all the rats and he wont be able to die

something like 0.1 power level so that 10 rats take up 1 (?)

Not sure if this helps the dev but I reduced the rats all the way down to max of 5 and my fps still averaged to 20 just like this guy
Just having the rats installed sets my fps to 20 as soon as any moon is loaded, uninstalled back to 70fps

I could be wrong but I think they are actually an enemy with a very low power setting. They are also killable and drop enemy remains with sell bodies too.

Strange, i thought people would ask for a more detailed model. I am planning on adding an alternative model. It will look like this and be called the jerma rat in configs
By pure luck, i found the 3d model for this rat and im so happy
It will have no animations except for a death animation like the current rat where it just lays sideways
This feels like someone asking to add their original character into a game, sorry but no. At the very least in the future I could make it so you can give the rats names.
How is this for stability? I know its in beta, but I really want to try it but dont want to have to tinker too much with my modpack to make it runnable

I'm working on making it more performance friendly
As far as compatibility, it should be compatible with most mods
Sell bodies is a bit broken though unless you blacklist the rats, since you can sell the rats for a lot of money

Here is the new rat king (with rat for comparrison; size is not final):
he will have some more animations and a lot of unique mechanics
including increasing performance by acting as a controller for all the rats
Here are the new Jerma rats and rat king:
You will need to enable a config option to use the jerma rats
They will also be an alternative for increased performance since they will have no animations except for a death animation, in which the rat will flipped over
The rat king will essentially be a boss fight
He will spawn if you kill too many rats or close all the sewer grates
He can also spawn from vents naturally like any other enemy, but there can only be one of him
if you kill him, you get his crown, which will have a high scrap value
and maybe a special ability
I am working on other projects atm, so i wont have as much time to work on him as before, but it still very much in progress and animations are being worked on

Gotta say our group thinks the rats are arguably the best custom enemy mod especially with the Santa hats
Some feedback, wish we could config how quickly the rats take away player bodies. They drag them away so quickly it's like there's nothing you can do to stop them even with a teleporter.
Can there be a configuration option to allow teleporting bodies back even after being dragged into a sewer vent?
If losing the themes of dying to being absolutely devoured by them are a concern, the corpse from being killed by a slime could be fitting to show all that's left is the suit and mask
How do we read the spawn curve? Not sure which values to change to make them spawn more
Picture it like a graph, the x axis is from 0 to 1 and the y axis is how many rat nests to spawn. Every time the ship lands, it chooses a random x value from 0 to 1 and whatever you value it lands on is how many nests will spawn. So 0, 0 ; 1, 1 has a 50% chance to spawn a nest.
That's actually a good idea, I didn't know the player body gets gets emptied when the slime eats them. I'll add that in next update for sure ^^

Very soon actually, its pretty much done rn with a huge overhaul to performance but the rats can't take explosive or shotgun damage because of how zeekers handles damage for it. It's kinda dumb but he uses the hittable interface to take damage from shovels but he doesn't use the same for shotgun or explosions.

Update: the animations are done 
so one of the things im thinking of reworking is the vents, right now, everytime a rat wants to use a vent it has to check if the if it can get to the vent and get to the destination of the vent. so instead of that im thinking of just making it so when a rat uses a vent to get back to the nest, instead of venting to the closest vent to the nest and calculating which vent that is, it just teleports to the nest, since the nest is sort of a vent anyways, or like maybe the sewer and vents are connected somehow idk
this could make the rats a lot more performance friendly
I could also make it so it calculates what the closest vent is when it spawns and just uses that vent everytime, but if that vent gets blocked somehow (big metal doors or locking a door) then their ai could get broken

Ideas for controlling rat population:
- A expensive ship command or one time purchase that makes all steam valves go off at once and dispense poisonous gas for a time
- A portable gas dispensor that sprays poisonous gas around an area and slowly spreads out
- Single rat traps for only 1 credit
- Expensive nail gun turret buyable in shop that kills rats
- Glue Rat Traps (sellable?)
- Poison canister (pour it down sewer grates to stop spawning regardless of wether the grate is closed or not)
- Cats!
In central config, it generates a name for each of the moon enemy configs. For some reason only the rats are the one thats not generated

Hello! I just wanted to report a small bug where the rats occasionally appear to be flying inside the Grand Armory interior from Wesyley’s Interiors in order to move around. It’s not a big deal but it’s definitely strange and quite amusing to watch
That would be a problem with grand armory
typically happens with elevators, i can only assume
enemies aren't exactly programmed to just wait for/on custom elevators when in use, so they learned to fly in that specific part of the interior
Its just a problem with their AI, you can see it in Mansion interior too

Poll time! Im considering reworking how the nests work. Currently to close them and prevent rats from spawning, you need to type in a code on the terminal, but i was thinking of maybe adding rat poison instead. it could be a shop item you can buy and pour down the drain of a rat nest to stop it from spawning rats. I will also add more ways to control the rat population via traps. Closing nests will have a high chance of spawning the rat king but traps will provide an alternative way to keep the population under control without that risk.
removing terminal code method also makes it easier to update the rat nest model in the future since it doesnt really make sense to be able to close it with terminal commands if its a nest made out of dirt or scrap

it would be a big jug and also act as kind of a boss summoning item since poisoning the rats will have a chance to summon the rat king
so its not like you need to have it to keep the rats under control, you can still just kill them or use traps

Probably a good idea, although having an item that only counters one enemy is a bit useless, the rat poison should do more stuff like kill giants when they eat someone with rat poison in their inventory.
It's gonna act like less of just a counter and more of like a boss summoning item

Hi, just saw that there was an update to add the rat king! It looks sick!
Can it spawn even if there is no rat nests? I lowered those spawn rates and I'm not sure how it will affect the king.

When picking it up it bugs the inventory and I have to use inventory fix to fix it.

I got an error last week when I played, didnt happen every quota, but I think it's when the king was spawned. It's a possibility that there was not a lot or no rat nests since I lowered their spawn rate.
Right before we finished the quota, while everything was despawning and before saving the day, the host crashed. (Happened 3 times and then we disabled the Rats mod 😦 ).

ah yeah, thats already a known bug then
and its been temporarily fixed
i made it so instead of gradually going from gold to gray, it just becomes gray when its filled with enough poison to stop spawning
until i can figure out how to fix the visual bug or find some other way to indicate that the nest has been fully poisoned
please do let me know if you encounter any other bugs tho ^^
