Holy shit

maybe you take advantage of animation transitions to technically only have 5 animations
maybe I should explain the general idea a bit more. Basically, you would have idle animations for each of the 5 floors. And then just give them an animation transition, which slowly moves it from the previous animation state, to the new one (you can adjust the time it takes). That way you don't need to animate every possibility

And u don't have to rely on jank animations for it
Plus animators aren't good for your performance, there's a reason a lot of what u guys do when spamming animators in moons can lag the game
Can also easily cause desyncs
you can probably find well-explained documentation OR videos that talk about it, somewhere. But basically, you'd find it somewhere around like, when you open the animator tab for the animatOR that the elevator is using, that contains all the animatIONS. In between the animations, assuming you've connected them to each other with arrows (for both ways), then you can select the arrows. You can then like edit the transitions, adjust times, add variables for when they should activate, etc.
That way, if you end up using animations, you can keep it at 5 instead of 20

i tried this, unfortunately it doesnt work like you thought it would unless i removed the elevator doors
or i could be setting it up wrong
basically, i set up one position with an animation of the doors closing (it sits still) and another position with them opening (down below)
the elevator goes down but
the doors jitter open repeatedly
if you do want to stick with animation stuff, you always could try a compound animation dynamic? Like have the door animations separate. But then that also means getting them to trigger at the correct time, unless you don't mind elevator time always being the same regardles of distance

also, I kinda rushed looking into it, but if you wanted different times based on distance, and to use in-game scripts like animated object triggers to play animations through another animation's animation events, then I think you could. It's less than ideal, and a little convoluted. And would require 10 elevator animations (5 for activating close doors animation before transitioning, and 5 for being idle and triggering opening doors animation)
but basically, if you for example, used an animated object script from in-game on the same part as the animator meant to trigger, and had an animation event to trigger it, that might work. Then take advantage of that to trigger opening and closing at specific times. Again, kind of convoluted, feels messy, but it's there if you want to look into it

but you could try the Animated Object Trigger
Though also, just saying, I wouldn't be offended if you resort to the 25 animations thing temporarily if it's easier. Sometimes you just want to make it work, and want to fix it later
so if it just feels a bit, you know, 😬 to try anything else, it's okay to try make it work first, before changing it, so you don't lose motivation

Spoilers for my next interior. ||Since im likely not going to work on this for a while until jacob gets the elevator scripts pushed out, i decided ill explain the new interior. Ive gotten barely any work done on it, but the concepting is done. Basically, its a 5 story nuclear bunker that has an elevator you can descend on by selecting any floor. Top floor has main and 3 branches, while every other floor has 4 branches in different directions. the branches are going to overall be pretty short, and they will have an industrial theme alongside some recreational areas. At the bottom floor, there is a specific branch where a giant room will almost always generate. The giant room could be an expansive engine room, or even a false outdoor recreational area. Maybe a food court. Basically, alot of going up and down, but alot of fun around the elevator. The actual shaft would be insanely deep, and is like twice as tall as some other interiors like generics tower. Cave segments can be seen between the levels. (Im considering making them walkable, but i dont know how exactly i should)||
||EDIT: it will now be half cave system with huge open rooms, and half industrial||

If it were possible to influence stairwells connecting floors in addition to the elevator, that'd probably do a lot to help enemies also navigate around players trying to elevator spam. Also would just assist in people getting lost and panicking which I'm all for. :)

would be cool if you kind of like "swapped" the way the cave and industrial segments of the mineshaft interior are done, by making the cave tiles really large and the industrial tiles really claustrophobic

a couple cave tiles will be sorta small (branches) and a couple industrial tiles will be relatively large
but most tiles will be at minimum larger than like, the locker tile in facility
