well 2 days ago I've been hit by crane's corner
i couldnt see where it was but the second i left the ship it crushed me

i'd prefer them if they didnt actively stalk or target players and instead just patrolled an area
i dont think they'd ever catch anything except enemies if that was how they worked unfortunately
they were a cool threat when thats what i thought they were but in their current state everyone is getting frustrated when they get caught out
being able to configure how long they stay off would be really nice, the 30 second default doesn't really feel worth going up there especially in singleplayer
idk i've seen most people enjoying it but always welcome on feedback on improving them in some ways here and there
combine that and the fact they only switch off for a small time, one being poorly placed can geniunely shut down the facility at times

personally my main fuss is i'd just like to be able to configure it a bit more
configuring is nice but if the configuration is changing the mechanic from active stalking to patrolling thats a bit more than just a bit more configuration

they do have a bit of extra range, iirc if you're at the very edge of their radius (which is just a big cylinder) they try to reach you and fall but cant or just barely clip your toes

i mean when you enter the radius, the crane doesn't immediately activate. it plays a sound, and then waits a few seconds before it starts moving and attacking
a few seconds would make it completely useless, it's a huge crane that is hard to miss most of the time unless you're not watching the environment, maybe half a second delay to give you enough time to detect it, walk out of range, gain stamina and try to bait it or run the opposite direction from it
it's pretty easy for it to ambush you at entrances/the ship though, where you can't just leave its range
alternative idea, can't attack players that have recently exited the ship/interior?

all the critical things on oxyde (shredder, crusher, cannon) having paths to them for vehicles would make sense i think if they don't have that already
you could probably reach each part except shredder with vehicle, which im fine with since there's alternate ways to transport the loot to the shredder faster than a vehicle would anyway (assuming no cruiser jumps involved)

yeah there's a scrap called a jimothy core that spawns randomly around the moon everytime (like 10 set locations it could spawn in), you could find it and keep it, or use it on the jimothy that's a bit to the right of the ship
but before you use it you put all your loot inside his safe and he takes it straight into shredder

not referenced anywhere, you sort of have to find it, i considered adding some hints but most people seemed to figure it out when they coincidentally found both him and started looking for a core/stumbled upon one

if i had to add hints i think i'd add a drawing of a jimothy core on a rock next to the forklift, then a few jimothy core drawings next to its spawn locations maybe
a little mark for potential spawn spots might be nice, i think the most needed hint other than that is sort of telling people that they can place stuff on the safe, and from there they can discover how he works, even if the first time they use him they dont use him fully, i've seen people activate him, fully him to the shredder where he off's himself and still get confused

tbh most of my gripe with the crane is almost every time its killed me im aware of it and just having trouble getting away from it
when it catches me off guard it feels like my fault but when im totally aware of it chasing me it feels more like a "cool, nothing i could've done there" moment
One would assume you should be careful around the 50ft tall automatic crane
something you couldve done there was go around it if you have a lot of weight or theres enemies there
unless its in a comically bad spot its rather balanced
it's pretty often in a bad spot in my experience
it might more so depend on the moons you visit
like wesley's junic with a lot of tight corners can be hell
but something like adamance is free reign

And, you can run really close to it, where you can then easily get behind it, and force it to spin around away from where you want to go
I'd even argue for that reason one camping the ship, whilst evil, isnt impossible to properly play around
The only thing i agree is the 30s disabling it is so short theres no point doing it, exposing that as a config would be nice
It doesn't check for the absolute edges of ceilings
I do think 30s does really need to be extended, a minute at most

But even then, a teammate can just manipulate the way the crane is facing so allies arent spawn killed as they leave-

If the midpoint goes past the ceiling, then the whole thing comes down
If the midpoint hits the roof, then it stops

Think of it like this
From the players pov there is a wall above them
That wall is one sided
So from the cranes pov, there is no wall
It's a bit of an oversight and a bit of a "what do I even do here lol", but I'll try to figure out a way where cranes can't rotate where there's a wall
The reason it was fine on zeta's clip is being the magnet was hitting a one sided wall that faced the magnet
Rather than a one sided wall that faced the player
Walls are never two sided because usually that's doubling the performance cost for no real reason

I think it might be important to clarify since I saw some confusion. By reloading save, do you mean the save had reset or you got fired, or do you just mean leaving the game, and then loading the same save after a session?

Moon weights: Experimentation@10, ...
Interior weights: Facility@15, ...
Weather weights: Rainy@10, ...
Usually they could combine additively to 35. For multiplication you could have a separate field listing the combinations and what multiplier to apply to the total weight.
Weight multipliers: Experimentation+Facility@2 (if both true, then multiply the result by 2 -> (10 + 15) x 2. Then if it is also rainy, add 10)
thats waaaaay too complicated and honestly not really possible unless people wanted to config outside of gale and into a json file

the whole thing is a bit hard to understand at first but it's just "transformers"
base weight is a number you define and from there each "Transformer" in the list in the second config applies a change to the value
i.e. if MoonName1 is experimentation and WeatherName2 is flooded and Interior3 is facility and we're playing on all 3 of those, it'd be 50 * 0.5 + 20 * 0.5 - 20 in that order left to right
it's either something like this or i force everyone to enter a text file outside of a mod manager for a cleaner format and i have no promises on making htings easier with a website etc

Anyways, in response to the crane complaints, we think the crane is fine as is currently, only thing we'd change is to make the disabling timer longer, making it not kill a few seconds when you come out the facility door and for xu to check if they can fix weird colliding issues with ceilings

It's survivable but it's still pretty frustrating to deal with at times
Maybe it'd be more manageable if you could disable it for longer, but having area denial in essential areas feels overly punishing at times
If you’re having problems with it then lower its spawn curve or disable it on certain moons
That's what I'm doing, just saying that if it couldn't directly camp the ship or facility entrances, it wouldn't be a concern
Like all I think it needs is another few meters min distance so you're safe on the ship catwalk
And that gives you so much more mobility options than being forced through a single doorway with a giant crusher above it
I’ve noticed it can be a bit funky around the ship making it hard to get back in. But there’s always atleast 2 facility entrances, and someone can disable it before everyone enters if you play with a group
That’s what we’ve been doing and we haven’t had many issues with the crane thus far
That's fair, I'm mostly just relaying and interpreting what other people in my group were saying after our last session
A few of them are very casual and our modpack is already pretty convoluted without having to worry about hazards directly camping the ship
Honestly, if Xu doesn't want to do that another solution might just be upping the disabled time / making it configurable
So if it is in a problematic place, I can disable it for a meaningful amount of time to let my friends get past
Would people prefer for configs to look like:
MoonName1:10,MoonName2:30,MoonName3:5 | Additive
or
MoonName1:+10,MoonName2:-30,MoonName3:*0.5
I assume option 1 is how every other mod does it?
which configs are these for (weather multiplier, weight in general, etc)
if its weights in general, i really don't think things need to be more complicated
If it's spawn weights for enemies or other stuff I don't think it should be more complicated than "moon: weight number"

if you want Moon weights with weather weights and interior weights they need to interact in some way

no, it means that whatever number you put is added along with whatever is on the two other interior/weather weights to equal the final weight

the reason i needed a way to differentiate some of this stuff is because rn enemies have a moon base weight and a weather multiplier, but if i wanted to add interiors to the mix i needed to be able to have it make sense
if interiors were multipliers it wouldnt make sense for some enemies
so sometimes you'd want your interior weights to be the base weight
or sometimes you just dont want a moon weight and only an interior weight

moon weight:x general weight per moon for something
weather:+/-/*x addition based on weather
interior:+/-/*x addition based on interior
for final weight based on moon, interior, and weather?

People usually config based on moon, if they don't want x enemy to show up on x moon but yes on Y interior then they just put in +20 for Y interior

so i want to spawn an enemy in interior x, i can do x:50 for interiors, y:*1.2 for a weather, but if i don't want it to spawn on some moon i do z:*0 for moons

also, love the way the crane spawned here on the edge of the lake. Just felt like a cool, logical spawn since there is technically a dock down there as well. Had a similar spawn once on another map of mine where it was actually ON the dock where the ship lands and there's some boxes and stuff. Very fitting there too. Just a shame the only way to and from the ship was straight under it. Like the crane was actually almost exactly as wide as the dock so you actually had to go under it iirc lol

Fair enough. Only reason i have her enabled is because i like her design the most, her abilities are helpful most of the time but not super op and overall she feels like she actually fits the game world IMO

afaik it doesn't affect scrap spawning since it's considered a "trap" (in terms of spawning)
theyre forced on if you have oxyde enabled, because they are part of the moon and coins are used for the merchant

They are just really annoying insta-death with no counterplay so if i have to disable bear traps entirely to get rid of them that would suck
yeah they arent insta death, you just have to be quick to disable it and run away
Might be worth considering changing that to Q to be consistent with the belt bag, unless there's alread a rebind config for that

if you've already disabled them like the image below and they're still showing up, perhaps try enabling it, load up the game so the configs reload, and then paste "Vanilla - 0.00,NaN ; 1.00,NaN | Custom - 0.00,NaN ; 1.00,NaN" into the spawn weights so it has no weight on any moon

im not sure if this works, but i set certain stuff like beartraps only to spawn on certain moons and doing it has helped on not every seeing it

But you can make the merchant only spawn in Oxyde
it shouldnt really force monsters to spawn rather than they just may have high default spawn weights and what moons you route to, like some monsters have higher or lower chances to appear on certain tagged moons like snowy or valley moons
