#Massive random frame drops in random places at random times

I have an issue where my frames would drop drastically at random times and at random places and intervals (RTX 3050 6GB). Game runs fine most of the time (around 50 to 60FPS) but there are times where the frames would drop to actual single digits and then go back to normal after a few minutes.

I noticed that its heavily influenced by whether I stay in the same area and what direction I'm looking in. If I keep moving and eventually move out of the area the frames will go back to normal, and the frames will also stabilize if I look directly at the ground. Also it seems to be a general area because if I were to look at said "zone" the FPS would drop but then would go back to normal the moment I look away.

There doesn't seem to be any specific time it happens, it seems to just happen randomly in random places after I play for a while; even places that were running just fine a while ago and I had no issues the last time I was there even in the same playthrough. I love the game but honestly this bug has been getting really annoying, because other than that the game performs fine 80% of the time.

I have a suspicion you may be running out of VRAM being that your card is below minimum specs for the game. When you have this happen, do you have any notifications in the top right of the screen? Little icons?

Turn on the steam performance overlay, and turn it on to show everything including your VRAM usage. Look at what VRAM is like when not having the issue, and when you start having the issue see if that changes. Could help give an idea whats going on.

An icon usually pops up on the top right that looks like a little mile tracker in a speedometer with a little red line on the middle.

I tried clearing the shader cache and it seems to have helped a bit. It still drops a little but not to unplayable levels and not for several minutes at a time. Its a lot more playable now because of that but I wouldnt mind digging more into this just in case something happens again.

I wasn't aware that my GPU was under the requirements, and if that's the case that might be troublesome. Id love to work through this still since it seems to perform fine for the most part, but I might have to try to get a refund if I can if it really cant be helped (and if I can't Ill just have to take the loss I guess). This card is very new and really punched a hole into my wallet as it is.

Ill try the looking at vram usage later today when I play again. Im really tired and havent had sleep yet. Thanks for the help by the way!

I did what you asked and these are the things Ive observed:

The VRAM seems to overflow my limit, but it doesnt seem to affect my performance in the slightest. It floats around the same amount and doesnt seem to have a correlation with my frames in any way. Whether it goes to 60 frames or its natural 40ish, it seems to remain unchanged.

I also noticed that after doing the shader cache wipe like what's listen in the technical guide thread, the freezes and stutters seem to last a lot shorter now only being a few seconds rather than several minutes. Setting my shader cache to be 100GB didnt seem to do anything but clearing the cache like the guide listed did help somewhat.

Lastly, the two screenshots I provided are my statistics as the framedrops are occuring, the first one being during the framedrops and the last one immediately after. Note that this is both in the exact same place as I hadn't really moved during it and are separated by a minute or two at most between the two screenshots. Just thought that might be useful when diagnosing the problem.

Thanks for you're help!

Also I have learned that I cannot tell the difference between 60 and 40. I consider this a buff considering Im chronically poor and live in a third world country where the cost of a 5090 would be enough to buy a car LOL.

That CPU temp needs attention. You are definitely in the realm of thermal throttling. Your GPU temps are fine so im assuming not a laptop (they share cooler on majority of laptops, so id expect it to be higher at 100% load)

#

96 degrees at 61% load is cause for concern

#

You need to check things like airflow, clean dust, and make sure fans are working

#

If all is, and it doesnt improve, check and replace thermal paste

#

If water cooled, id make sure pump is running

#

The vram can still be an issue causing some issues even if alot of the time its fine, but now im more concerned about the temps there tbh

Id check things, thats very high.

But I can try to get the thermal paste checked I suppose, dont really know how but I can find a way.

If you check on YouTube, there are alot of really good guides and videos on it

#

Id be happy to look for one to reccommend

graceful gyro
#

Ill probably just hire someone to do it because I do not trust myself with hardware this expensive, but thanks haha

ember void
#

Ok no worries. But I will say if you can turn a screwdriver, and not stab forward, its very low risk to do yourself

#

And by stab forward I mean like youre trying to kill it lol

graceful gyro
#

But would thermal throttling really be the issue if this is pretty normal with all the other games that I play and no other games seem to be affected by something like this?

graceful gyro
#

and to be honest, Im still not sure which side is the right side up even after watching a guide

ember void
#

Well UE5 can be very CPU heavy at times, and if your CPU is throttling and cutting back, that could certainly cause issues. If youre looking in an area or thing are happening that require a burst of CPU usage, and it cant give it because its throttling due to heat, could cause drops

Also, I did just have my PC cleaned when I installed my new card, I just hadnt replaced the thermal paste when I did

ember void
#

I cant be sure thats the exact cause of the issue, but it could be at the very least a contributing factor, and definitely concerning enough to need to be checked out.

graceful gyro
#

But considering that I dont have the money for something like that right now, theres really nothing I can do about it for the meanwhile. RIght now it seems a lot more playable anyway now now that I recompiled the shader cache. Nothing I can really do but trust God and hope my PC doesnt explode haha

graceful gyro
#

could be longer considering I havent been monitoring it for very long

ember void
#

Take a quick look in at the least and just make sure all fans are spinning. Could be something came unplugged in cleaning and needs to be plugged back in. Would be sweet if it was just something like that.

#

But I need to go to sleep, im passing out lol. Other will hopefully be able to chime in with some other things to look at as well 🫡

graceful gyro
#

I mean when I get the money for someone to check Ill go do that I suppose. When that might be, I really have no idea haha

#

thanks for the help man, sleep tight!
