From my point of view, adding MANPADS (portable anti-air systems) would be a great improvement. It would make helicopter travel more dangerous and therefore more realistic, especially when flying over combat zones. Combined with the ability to choose your own flight path to avoid flight-path camping, as well as the dynamic LZ system I mentioned earlier, I think weapons like Stingers would fit perfectly.
Right now, many players simply escape with a helicopter instead of taking the fight. Personally, I don’t see the point of fleeing in complete safety in a game where players willingly choose between PvP and PvE. If they choose to play PvP, then it makes sense to add tools that prevent them from escaping every time without any risk. And of course, a Stinger cannot be used against ground players since it’s an IR-guided weapon, so there’s no balance issue there.
As it stands, helicopters are basically a safe zone: no stress, you can cross the entire map without any danger. With MANPADS, you could actually get engaged, which would completely change the dynamic. Taking a missile doesn’t automatically mean dying; crashing doesn’t either. It can simply mean you miss your LZ and end up in the forest, being hunted by another team. You can still choose to flee, but you can also choose to take the fight — both remain viable. Naturally, MANPADS/Stingers wouldn’t be free; they would have a reasonable cost to keep things balanced.
Regarding the AI that pilots the helicopter: in most real situations, it’s the copilot who handles threat detection and flare deployment. Allowing a player to take the copilot seat would not only be more realistic, but also easier to implement. The copilot watches for MANPADS and calls them out, and the pilot fires the flares. Even if the Little Bird doesn’t have a large amount of flares, it still has enough to defend itself.
