Both franchises went from aiming to produce a high quality product, to slapping new skins over similar gameplay and trying to maximise sales rather than focusing on producing a coherent product.

SBMM was only created to look after players who get slapped up in every lobby and stop that from happening to protect their sales. Any game producer that prioritises bottom line over quality is heading down the same slope.

Cod’s player base is almost non existent due to things like SBMM, poor maps and cartoon characters. It’s no shock that the minute they remove SBMM from the beta it surges in popularity, causing them to remove it from the game entirely on release.

Yeah that’s what I mean. The games shouldn’t be manipulating the experience as much as they’ve been allowed to over recent years. And it’s resulted purely in cod falling off a cliff and fifa actually being forced to listen to people for a change.

My point being, SBMM all but killed cod and it was purely in place to protect casuals and therefore Activisions bottom line. It’s the same in fifa when things like the first patch this year comes jn and protects people who couldn’t defend.

And it completely negates the need for a ranked mode if every public match is essentially ranked. They forgot the whole point of a public match was to be a total mixed bag.

I do agree I think they went a bit too far, but at the same time I agree with the premise of what they were trying to do. I just think they caved too much too soon to the bottom feeder population.

Which leads me back to my initial point of, they shouldn’t be listening to people who are just bad at the game. Cause it doesn’t matter if EA always did what bad players wanted, some of them will always be bad no matter what. It’s not the way to go about finding a balance.

How can they strike the perfect balance for it when some people don’t think a green time shot should go in guaranteed, and others think it should? The reason were all playing against the same opponent - EA fc defending ai and all that, is that EA doesn’t give up control and manipulates players to buy packs

They simply can’t be trusted to get things right anymore. I’ve long said I think that’s the reason behind why there’s about 100 more settings than there was 5-6 years ago. They’ll say it’s to give the player more control etc, I think it’s cause they can’t be trusted to get it right themselves.

Take player switching for example. It used to just be whatever it was as default, you couldn’t change it. Then the logic of it got worse and the game couldn’t identify the right player switches anymore. Now, you get to pick how it works. For me, that’s just admission that they could no longer get it right and a way of passing the buck to the individual player.

EA said it was FIFAs fault like we all wouldn’t notice it was absolute bs. That without FIFA they could actually do what the community asked for. So they got the benefit of the doubt for FC24. First game on a new engine fair enough. Now we’re 3 years in, and the game is getting better I think each year, but by such tiny amounts it’s not really noteworthy. That and then they patch the living daylights out of whatever new gameplay they’ve introduced.

It’s like they don’t have the bottle to say the to the community; this is the new gameplay and we think it should stay like this. Within 3 weeks it’s an entirely different game.

Tbf I have little to no time for Activision. The only thing I’ll give them credit for, is I expected them to put up a wall of defence to stop SBMM, their prized possession, from being removed. In fact, Activision agreed, which caught me by surprise. It turns out the people being most difficult about it are actually IW, who’ve not only tried to block the removal of SBMM, they’ve already said they’ll bring it back, and won’t be using omnimovement either, despite that being the new direction of cod. They’re just being stubborn and toxic.

Trust me, in world football, players perform all kinds of skills. You won’t see this a lot in the top leagues or tournaments, but players pull off crazy moves. I think it’s a great feature for a video game if you can use crazy skills when you have time and space. I mean, that’s the core problem in how people view football. You don’t have to watch football only at the Champions League level. Football is big. And a video game is a game. I think having control to do whatever you want is a good thing from a video game perspective, because in real life you also have the option to do all these things. Yeah, I’m still an avid ranked player despite all the games flaws. BO6 had some great promise but was absolutely decimated by cheaters that multiple attempts by Ricochet failed to deal with. Was a real shame. That and the maps have been probably the worst they’ve ever been for the last 4-5 years. But the fact that IW would rather take the whole franchise down with them instead of accepting they need to move into the 21st century is wild.

How did EA manage to make the game worse? Squad Battles is virtually unplayable. I used to play Legendary against teams in FC25 that were 75 rated or lower and win. Now I struggle against similar teams on Professional. If that was what they were aiming for they defined the wrong target. In fact the target and the shot are in different universes completely. Consistency is key and in the game now against AI there is a complete lack of it. It doesn't exists and the game only provides one of two things boredom or fustration. There is no enjoyment. No fun. No feeling of challenge or accomplishment. Just humilation in 3-0 defeats against 65 rated AI or 8-0 wins against 85 rated AI. Get your consistency together this is as absolute shambles.

But yeah, we all know skill moves are difficult to balance. For me, though, it’s still better than all this spinning and fast backward turns. That’s what they call dribbling, and technical ability is something else, it’s all overloaded. I don’t know what EA is doing

Ranked was horrendous I can’t even explain. I played maybe 4-5 cheaters the whole of MW2, then MW3 there were more as the year went on particularly nearer the end. BO6 was something else. S1 ranked, it was almost impossible to play a game past crimson rank. Literally 4 stack cheaters every game for 6 games on the spin. Was absolutely insane.

Then they started with the cartoon character operators and teenage ninja turtles cutting about ranked. Beyond stupid.

Yeah for me the 2 things that ruined cod more than anything were SBMM and crossplay. Bringing PC into console lobby crossplay was one of the worst decisions they’ve ever made. For me, PC shouldn’t be part of crossplay by default. It should be something you can opt into including. Not to mention that on a game like cod and a mode like ranked, PC players have so much advantage over console players it’s not even fair let alone cheating.

For BO7 beta they’ve realised that it’s basically now or never to fix cheaters, as it’s the number one thing that pushed people away from BO6. They’ve introduced the thing about secure boot or something? Something like that to stop you from being able to run malicious programs when you load the game and I won’t lie, I don’t recall playing a single cheater on the beta. They even said that 98% of cheaters were banned before getting into a lobby or something. So it’s progress, but a bit like EA, the game had to be falling off a cliff for them to actually pull the finger out.

Yeah agree. PC has such an advantage on competitive fast paced FPS anyway so it’s not really fair. They’re playing at 3-4x the frame rate etc and that’s before cheating. The problem is that some of them know how to spoof their PC into showing as console. So when they infest the console only lobbies it’s gg anyway. That and console only often ended up with matchmaking times being ridiculously long and playing the same people repeatedly.

Thing is ranked used to be that way. You couldn’t play with people a certain bracket outside your skill level. Then BO6 they changed it where, if you were running a 4 stack you could have anyone you wanted skill wise. Could have 2 bronze players and 2 iridescents. So long as you had a 4 stack, cause then the fault and responsibility for how it goes is on the you not the game which was fair enough. It meant you could play with mates outside your level, but it wasn’t fun for anyone really. Lobbies too hard for some of my mates, but costing me wins playing with them.

Nah I get the suspicion, but BO7 SBMM was so strong everyone literally complained so they released a playlist without it. I can’t lie I was disappointed by it. I seen all the pros, ranked players and content guys saying about how good it is and will be. Then I played it and to this day I don’t get what they’re seeing and I’m not particularly excited by it as I know ranked will be a struggle for me. Idk if it’s just cause I won’t be as good at BO7 as I was on BO6 or what, but I never liked the jetpack era either and it’s a sorta hybrid of that and normal BOTG.

I agree to a point but as someone who slams ranked and enjoys the game more from a competitive standpoint; the pro scene weren’t wrong about the faults of previous games and BO6 faults (maps being the man one alongside cheaters) so when they said BO7 was gonna wipe the floor with it it gave me hope as a competitive player. I also am guilty of some nostalgia blindness as the devs kept saying it’ll be like BO2, which is hands down for me the best COD of all time, especially from a competitive perspective and is widely considered such by the pro scene as well. But I’m struggling to see how it’s anything like BO2 so I feel lied to.

Yeah I couldn’t believe they got away with that. MW2 2009 maps, not made for competitive gameplay being used in cod champs in 2023. The only caveat to that is, Sledgehammer who made MW3 weren’t originally supposed to, and ended up only having like 13 months to come up with MW3, so I can sorta give some leeway as to why they just reused old stuff.

Activision are similar to EA in that regard in that they had demonstrated they have ran out of ideas of how to make good, free flowing and balanced maps. So they just reuse old ones or rehash old ones. I didn’t think they could get any worse, then BO6 comes out with tiny, mixey 2 lane maps and it was a mess to play competitively. Maps were so small people would die and be back in the mixer in 4 seconds so they didn’t have to think about how to play their life etc.

They can patch things all they like they can tinker with the sliders, one main huge issue ea have always had with fifa and continue to have, is lack of servers. So you have all these new players and old players, playing on these lack of servers causing huge bottlenecks, no matter how good your connection is, how low your ping is, it don’t matter.

I’m up 3-0 in 12 min in the draft final everything feels good. After 3rd goal I start getting delay. Not a single player on the pitch is open and my opponent can intercept every single pass. Every single shot is blocked. Meanwhile my game isn’t even registering my tackles. And when they do absolutely nothing happens. He can just walk through my team on insane responsiveness but I can barely switch players. The script in this game is too obvious and it’s the most horrible mechanic in the entire game. Thanks EA
