Investors are common even in small self publish indies
Getting a publisher is a common route too
Grants are a big thing too and grants can be sizeable
Getting them is actually really hard to do and takes a lot of hard work and negotiations for indies

They likely worked hard for it

To even be able to get into a room with big investors is a lot of work

When studios are owned, that's often handled for them by their parental company
