It is similar but the Portia series are way better. I'm only going by the Starsand demo though lol It was cute but I don't think it's adding anything groundbreaking to the genre

Just putting my 2 cents into this convo, what a lot of people don't realize is that the devs are using us, the players, as free budget quality control testers so they don't have to pay legit quality control testers.
How do I know this? I had 2 friends in quality control. One worked for Bethesda and One worked for Obsidian, both lost their job suddenly because those studios basically said 'Yea, we are just going to send keys out that, technically, don't cost us anything and allow players to do your jobs now. See ya! Here's your severance!'
Just another way to bleed the stone. Mind you, it would work if you still kept a slimmed quality control department with someone who knows coding and can pinpoint roughly where the bug is, saving the devs time and effectively money, and have that smaller quality control department then look through the bug reports and help push those over to devs to take a look into after reproducing them themselves. But, yea, getting rid of QC completely for player only testing has become a standard.
Again, I understand it a bit more for indie devs not to have access to a legit QC dept so, of course, they rely on player based bug reporting but the bigger studios...yea, they just greedy!

I feel conflicted about early access nowadays. On the one hand I like it for large complex games like InZoi. But it feels like a money grab and laziness for games with less complexity and especially if there is a mid sized to large publisher behind it

Quality Control isn't just playing the game and finding bugs. TRUE Quality Control is knowing how to play a game in a way that will reveal the bugs and knowing, coding wise and game developmental wise, exactly what happened in order to pass it along to the correct people on the team to fix in order to give a polish product.
Player Beta Testing is not equal to true Quality Control department. Player Beta Testing does have a place in the process but to think that it could completely replace a true QC department isn't best for the overall health of game engineering. And that's because the coding part falls back on the coding devs and basically doubles their work load, meaning they are taking on more responsibility without additional pay or consideration of time aka crunch happens.
Please don't think for one second the bigger gaming studios are putting the money they are saving towards better development. That money saved is just lining someone higher up and has never developed a game in their life's pocket.

100%, and sometimes you will find players who do have some coding experience and their feedback is extra helpful. Early Access with smaller/indie developments is USUALLY used how it is suppose to but, as people pointed out, a lot of bigger studios or not so nice indie developers are starting to use it as a cash grab or max'ing profits by refusing to hire QC when they could.

I haven't sunk too much time into Starsand so much but I've been enjoying it
Is it insane to say it feels like a gatcha game without being gatcha
A lot of gatcha games have REALLY good fun gameplay and lots to do but then charge you money to get new outfits/mounts/etc
This game is like those gatchas but if they actually gave you everything in game and you didn't need to pay for all the extras
