I do still think there's a good Paralives game somewhere but I also think somewhere along the lines they moved away from simulation and into management game
Especially with how they do socialisation in game
Your Paras talk together then, after they finish, you click a popup to decide what your paras talked about and it has a chance to succeed or fail and then they do the animation in response
Which is how I understood their chance card system
But to me, that feels limiting in story telling massively

I just watch them talk about something random? Then they decide it's an angry conversation afterwards?

While I haven’t been following the development as closely as I do with inZOI, one comment from a playtester really stuck with me. They mentioned that the only noticeable highlight from the gameplay was the crying scene in the trailer, which they said happened multiple times during a single playthrough

Things can be changed based on feedback, and it's not like we have many simulation games to go off of so who knows how it'll feel really. Maybe people will like it, maybe not. That's how innovation goes

We did learn some years after the fact that Meet Maggie, Meet Sebastian and Sebastian's Summer were all mislablled Conceptual Demos of what they thought the game would be like
Which is a legitmate thing you can do in the industry
But they never labelled it or made it clear those were concepts
They hadn't even touched a lot of live mode when those had come out
And especially not the basics like pathfinding or sitting animations

People still to this day think it's in-game engine gameplay

I was really confused by the "together card" Paralives gameplay. Clicking on cards doesn't seem very immersive. I think that's the biggest issue with Paralives currently is the fandom has really moralised Paralives too
Like Paralives is inherently good and work hard!! compared to the evil unpassionate lazy people who work at triple As!!
and it's a larger issue I find with the game industry as a whole when it comes to indie vs triple A

People have moralised them and make personal judgements of other people based on them

The amount of work and passion you have to have to get into Triple A studios alone is like

People think nobody actually does any work at them

I don't think either is inherently better than the other

There's some AWFUL indies out there that are MISERABLE to work at

Paralives seems to be an inexperienced team. And that's okay. All business, big or small, need to gain experience. I think the challenge Paralives is facing currently is over hype. Hype and buzz are great. Over hype- no. This might be a controversial take but I kind of blame all the creators who fled the EA Creator Network and pivoted to Paralives for their YouTube content.

I think it all comes down to pathfinding though but I do standby they should have done it years ago
It's such a fundamental in game design for majority of games, not just life sims
The fact a lot of the game was finalised, including decisions and mechanics that would impact pathfinding and other live mode features
Before they touched live mode
Will always have me screaming like Hank and I have been for years about them neglecting priority systems that can impact a lot if neglected for a long time

This is how watching Paralives development road map has been like
And it only got worse as I got more experience in game development myself

Like none of it is incredibly bad
but they've had a lot of issues cropping up for years

A large part of my job has been leaning over someone's shoulder to watch them develop it and deal with it
But i's kind of an ongoing thing
You make a new system, especially an AI that has some level of autonomy, then you test the pathfinding and make sure it works with the system you want
And you do that with everything that needs to rely on the AI

It's why Sims tends to be grid based
(Inzoi also has a grid but it's tiny compared to Sims one)
And why free placement is usually done as an optional feature for players but expected to bug out

Like, i was like 12 and me and my aunt (who's a year older) were sleeping over alone at her house while my grandparents slept with my parents down the street. Anyways, we were sleeping in the same bed and I accidently turned and kicked her in my sleep. But then we felt a breeze and realized the front door was wide open. So we immediately got up, went to lock it with all the locks as well as piling some chairs against it, and walked around the apartment with a frying pan. We were too terrified to go back to sleep so we jusf stayed in bed but then 10 minutes later we heard someone trying to lockpick the door 😵‍💫😵‍💫
