I don't know. Sims 2 is not an open world either but I find it more fun. For example, in sims 2 there are more things to do.

You have to go buy the food at the store yourself, or video games, sims are harder to befriend, so there are more social options.

If you do bad things, you really have consequences and events.

For example, if you spy on a neighbor with a telescope, one day you'll have a neighbor who will complain about it and reproach you.

Paralives has to release an actual gameplay walkthrough showcasing how the gaming mechanics work together, before I buy it. Especially at $40. I'll also admit I'm a little salty that the trailer has scenes that look like parties, but that the official devblog says that parties won't even be in the game at launch and will be coming later on down the road during Early Access.

I feel every trailer they've shown so far in recent years has characters walking but in set animations and paths (usually the two by two walk or job animations where they do it together)

It's always starts with characters already doing interactions or just walking or jogging already
Which is why they REALLY need a gameplay showcase
because in my head it just always remains disjointed how it plays

This is what scares me about it. No one has seen any actual gameplay of Paralives at this point and they don't want to release a demo or playtest to the public, which is another red flag in my book. Animations look great though

Right now all of their videos just remind me of well-done Sims 4 marketing videos for their expansions, especially the older ones, where you would think you could do X and Y and only be able to do a shadow of those things in the end. One of the reasons I bought Inzoi was because I got to see hours of other people actually playing the game, so I knew exactly what I was getting. With Paralives, I don't feel like that has happened. I was a patreon before and participated in some of their Q&A sessions. The large amount of vague answers I got to questions that usually were something like "we'll see" or "cool idea" with no concrete answer, was very off-putting. Add to that the lack of an actual gameplay demo, and I don't know... I'm cautiously optimistic for the fans, but I won't buy it on release myself and will probably wait for a sale.

I do think it's wild to me seeing people who originally trashed Inzoi for $40 is fighting tooth and nail to justify Paralives $40
Like $40 doesn't bother me (because I'm British so $40 actually works out cheaper for me ) but it's steep in general for any early access game
But I do just find it wild how quickly people did 180 on it
I personally agree with the arguements that Inzoi itself didn't justify the $40 for a lot of players in terms of gameplay hours
While there were others, like me, who did get well over the game hours out of it and are just waiting for updates
It just didn't hit that for A LOT of other people
But for some reason there's a sentiment that Paralives will be inherently different

AND THERE IS THE INDIE VS MAJOR STUDIO arguement
But I do think regardless $40 is something that needs to be justified for early access with a price change later down the road regardless of studio size
especially in terms of indie games $40 for a full game can be considered a steep price

Paralives having free updates for life is a nice argument
But it's arguing it's future not it's current
and same as it was Inzoi
There's a lot of people who will just not see price reasonable for current content especially knowing the price will go higher later on

I think that's my thing
Paralives is almost treated like the holy grail of life simulation and has been for years now
And people can't see themselves being hypocritical about it

Also sorry if I'm not 100% making sense and a bit disjointed 😭 one of the reasons I haven't been actively chatting is my fatigue is at nuclear levels
So my brain be foggy and I be extra rambly because of it

I don't get this either. The argument I've seen is that Paralives should be $40 because it's made by an indie studio which means the devs put more work into it than a corporation. But when you factor in overhead costs, that argument falls flat on it's face. I don't think the studio size matters for the price, but the content of the game. I got downvoted into oblivion on reddit for saying that Sims 4, although I don't agree with the price structure, has past performance of their other games (Sims 1, Sims 2, and Sims 3) to be able to command a $40 price tag. Not to mention that it's been the only life sim in existence for decades and with the short supply of competitors and high demand of players, they have been able to ask for $40 expansions. But people don't want to hear that. They just want to think that indie automatically means good and corporate automatically means evil

I think that inzoi has moments where the community has been highly critical of it and also praised it. Paralives has almost never had any criticism, even when the flaws are glaringly obvious, which is concerning to me. And like you said, they have promised to do alot in the future, but 1) those future updates have zero timeline and 2) they don't have to follow through on their promises just like they didn't follow through on the promise of cars, cats and dogs, and houseboats at the launch of EA.

It's something I've noticed a lot is in general, indie and small studios are held on a moral pedestal that it's inherently better to support them than major studios
And there IS a lot of good indie and small studios
But there's A LOT of BAD ONES
I've worked for free and been underpaid way more than I'm willing to admit
And like, at the end of the day, major studios have HR teams which small studios and teams often lack
And there's A LOT of good major studios too

I'm in both Paralives spaces and outside of it
I think outside of Paralives official spaces there's a lot of criticism or concerns
But anything official and it's heavily pushed out
I find at least here in Inzoi discord I can talk about flaws or concerns about Inzoi
Some will push back but most people are open to discuss it

OH it's very much down to people REALLY take it personally and any crictism of the game gets treated like you're personally yelling at a developer or artist
Like outside of Paralives official spaces, I do find a lot of people agree on art style but when I've tried to have the same conversations in Paralives spaces it gets personal or heated fast
I remember a while back I talked about how Paralives work flow and approach to game design has always felt backwards to be as someone in the industry
Where they tend to do art first, gameplay second and actually made major decisions without seeming to test it in game engine (from their roadmap) and this was decisions that, while doable, was going to slow them down
Like their approach to animation felt like it purely came from them finalising a lot of paramaker without gameplay consideration
And I always try to hit home that it IS doable and none of this is a sign of a scam
Just inexperience and a team likely struggling with the knowledge to approach the scope of their game
Elsewhere it got well recieved
Paralives reddit I had to delete it because it got downvoted to hell, people were taking it WILDLY personally as if I was calling the entire game a scam and I got reddit cared
This was a while ago now (year or two by now) but it's the sort of thing that left me like

The paralives team are themselves very open that they are inexperienced for the scope of the game they're making
So I don't think it's against developers to point out something they pointed out themselves first

I also once posted that the team should really be branching out and marketing themselves to the wider community outside of patreon especially as they're close to early access release
And they'd benefit heavily by marketing themselves to indie and cozy markets (which I'm also in and it's always shocked me how many cozy gamers don't have paralives on their radar or even known it's a thing)
Especially since life simualtion market right now is two known triple A companies vs a brand new indie studio
They need to even the playing field
and there's entire markets that would do that for them
Indie market has an audience where people only play and follow indie games and I think Paralives would do well there
Same with wholesome and cozy markets
and it somehow got personal again 😭 and like??? Paralives is doing it now with the pc gamer showcase
It was advice to help them thrive

that makes sense. i think with art. style it really is preference and it’s easy to feel insulted when many people outright call the game ugly (not saying you do) especially when you know it won’t be changing any further. but yeah they are inexperienced and they did choose to focus on build mode first and it’s fair to question that. i’m sorry the paralives community made you feel like you couldn’t mention these things

i know they were in wholesome direct last year but yeah i was surprised it wasn’t this year. but pc gamer is also good, it’s a wide market. i think they are trying to market to cozy gamers generally though, they post everywhere not just patreon

I will say I do think there's names I've come to associate with bad paralives fans and mostly avoid them nowadays
But I'm always aware when it comes to fanbases and communities you get vocal minorities and most people are chill

I’m planning to play Paralives, but ever since someone pointed out how the character art style doesn’t quite match the 3D environment, I can’t unsee it. The disconnect between the two styles is pretty distracting, it makes the characters feel out of place compared to everything around them
