It was one of the first HDR games I tried and with it I started messing with ReShade shaders and learning a bit about all this.

unreal niche
#

hdr looks pretty solid, just lower highlights down to -5

sharp totem

#

its super blown out at the default value

sharp totem
#

Haha.

#

Adds more punch he says... To the eye retina maybe.

placid radish
#

this guy always recommends insane settings

#

this is the setting he recommended looks like

#

worse highlight detail than sdr

placid radish
#

its way too contrasty by default

Gamma 2.4 is what movies and TV shows use

#

TLoU also looks like G2.4 in HDR

#

And nixxies games insomniac ports are 2.35 apparently

unreal niche
#

But Nixxes did 1.9 on the pc ports for Spider-Man 1 and miles some reason doomer42

#

idk about ratchet

#

But it’s also insomniac

#

So probably the same 2.35 I imagine

lavish vessel
#

Right I've meant insomnac ports by nixxes

placid radish
unreal niche
#

How do you know they’re encoding with 2.4 in sdr

placid radish
unreal niche
#

Noice

placid radish
#

wait, maybe not encoding with 2.4, but they are targeting 2.4 displays

#

thats what lilium told me iirc

#

dont know if they are straight up encoding with 2.4

sharp totem
#

But as far as i know HDR is meant for 2.2, right? I'm still almost clueless about HDR but I thought that was like a cornerstone of it.

#

Wait. Maybe not. I came to that conclusion because my TV defaults to 2.2 and you cannot change it while HDR is active.

placid radish
#

but for games target 2.2 in sdr, they should match the look of sdr 2.2 for most game in terms of midtone and shadow detail since almost all games are sdr first so sdr 2.2 is the intended look

#

99% of the games target gamma 2.2, the only games i know that target 2.4 are tlou part 1 and ghost of tsushima

#

and its not all about highlights/peak brightness

#

its also about details

placid radish
#

in the case above

#

you dont get any extra detail compared to sdr

#

this is not what hdr is meant to be

#

you can check this comparison, true hdr just provides more hightlight detail

#

this is also why i think gamingtech's setting is just insane

#

but anyway, that guy doesnt know anything about hdr, you should never follow his advice

sharp totem
#

Nah I just use it as a heads up then ask here to all you very gentle and patient people then I try finding some middle ground between my ignorance and your huge and detailed knowledge and advice.

#

Wasn't there a project to make some sort of Wiki for HDR? With all the work you guys do it'd be great to archive it somewhere as a reference and starting point for other gamers.

sonic pawn

Yes it’s worth it

kindred wave
#

he has improved though at least he actually measures it

#

what are ideal settings for this game i thought it looked good out of the box

#

i guess just shadows -3

placid radish
#

well his info is correct mostly

#

but just dont follow his advice

#

by mostly i mean hes using low quality capture from ps5

kindred wave
#

yeah that is a big mistake he makes too he seems to review most games on console when PC has better analysis tools

placid radish
#

it is possible to get high quality capture on ps5

kindred wave
#

but back to my question pretty much just shadows -3 on this

#

to my untrained eye it looked good and way less blown out then the original

placid radish
#

-5 highlights

#

default value blow out some hightlights

hello for some reason after all the patches horizon forbidden west is still broken about HDR. when everything is setup correctly in windows HDR calibration app, yet only few numbers make the brightness pop much more such as 472 or 1016 for some example. does someone knows why it happens and how to fix it so I could enjoy the game fully ? I would like to set it to 450 but it's all washed out

#

what are the current recommended settings for HZD?

#

can't seem to figure out the correct HDR Brightness value, I use 150 nits target for autohdr and rtxhdr (gamma 2.2) but this slider does not seem to equate to paper nits at all

#

@magic field This ' use SDR 2.2 Emulation in [Lilium Black Floor Fix]'. Is this correct?

magic field
#

Yes, for 200nits paper white ingame

wide schooner
#

Should it match? You can't set 200 in game. Also BT 709 = SDR 2.2?

So, attempting to get HDR working under cachyos running KDE. While I can get the game to enable HDR the colors are completely washed out and thus far nothing I've tried has functioned

#

I'm using a 9070 running the latest mesa driver(literally installed this instance of cachy twelve hours ago so I know I'm current )

Resolved-ignore. For anyone else running into this issue
If you find setting hdr via steam command line args results in a washed out image try launching steam in big picture mode in the command line with game scope the exact command is gamescope -w [resolution] -h[resolution] --hdr-enabled --fullscreen -e --steam -bigpicture
