During the middle stages of filming, Chris Noonan catches an cold and dies from it, which causes Universal to fetch Mel Brooks to take over as director and co-screenplay writer, much to George Miller's disgust as he fears so he and his brother Bill Miller quit production during the early stages of Brooks' tenure of the film, with Mell Brooks replacing them with Gene Wilder (who starred in Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein) and Dave Chappelle (who stared in Robin Hood: Men in Tights, as Achoo) as producers (with Wilder also taking on the screenplay duties), and Brooks decides to rework the film into a comedy with the typical Mel Brooks humor along with inserting himself into the film while still keeping the material filmed under Noonan's direction. Eventually, the production of film runs out of piglets due to all of them outgrowing the part to portray Babe, so Brooks replaces them with Cary Elwes (who starred as the titular character (Robin Hood) from Robin Hood: Men in Tights) to play Babe complete with an pig costume with Mel Brooks firing Christine Cavanaugh (who was voicing Babe), in order to have Elwes portray the role entirely, thus resulting in horrible inconsistencies where Babe is portrayed by piglets and voiced by Christine Cavanaugh and then switch to Cary Elwes in a pig costume playing Babe. Eventually, the film is released on 4 August 1995 to box office failure due to the mixed direction (which did not help that the film had two credited directors, Noonan and Brooks), Brooks' bizarre casting choice of Elwes playing Babe, and the jarring inconstancy regarding the titular character, that it bankrupts MCA, and they along with Universal are taken over by Columbia Pictures, and folded into them.
