Everyone does it differently. I upgraded each step cuz I kept running out of ingredients and it helped me to get more ingredients while i waited.

I would claim that first ★ upgrade card, then save up nine of them. Set the last one to the side, and merge eight cards up to a ★★★ upgrade (skipping completely over the ★★ upgrade).

After you upgrade, that last card (and any luckys) can be exchanged for gems

I heard that gold gives you bonus gems 50% of the time but silver gives you bonus gems 70% of the time. Donno how true, but that’s why I stopped opening the gold.

I open silver chest now just for the increased XP from merging. Supposedly gold chests have a higher greenhouse ratio from community input, I don't know though and the wiki that says it's the same as all other chests might be outdated too. I think I'm okay with higher greenhouse output versus higher gems, and even then it's just slight

I only open the purple toolboxes until it shows 5 mins for the next timer. I also do that for the yellow, but then sometimes finish them off if I need space or tools. Haven’t had much of a problem with not having tools when I need them.
