It's actually beneficial not to open any chests before level 20. Also, opening several at once lets you merge a whole bunch of things at once rather than letting it pile up slowly

It's really handy to try to do a whole bunch of really small jobs when you use one of those energy bolts. That way you can hurry up and burn through the energy and start regenerating energy again (also then you can leave energy again at other people's farms)
