If you are experiencing a black screen issue:

• If you play on PC: make sure that you've turned on "Hardware acceleration" (Discord settings > Advanced)
• Clear Discord cache files (tutorial: https://www.howtogeek.com/686597/how-to-clear-discord-cache-files-on-desktop-and-mobile/)

ive always assumed refreshing is closing and reopening the app

You get to choose the farm who you visit if you want their resources or not, if you need energy and they don't have it for you, etc..
OR you refresh your farm without needing to close and reopen your game/rejoin the activity so you can check if anyone randomly visited you and can receive visit gifts.

I would claim that first 1-star card, then I would save up nine of them. Set the last one to the side, and merge 8 cards up to a 3-star (skipping completely over the 2-star upgrade). After you upgrade, that last card can be exchanged for gems

Well, you can just merge three 1-star cards then merge those up to 3-star... OR, you can shovel away one of those 2-star cards and save up six 1-star cards. Set one to the side and merge 5 (so you'll have a card set to the side for gems). It's only 10 gems though, so that's completely up to you if you want to waste all the time it took to get to that 2-star

Silver is usually the way to go, you get more XP from merging the parts that come out of it, It feels like a good balance of time and everything, and there's a general consensus that they are best.

However, I've probably opened up more gold chests than silver. There is very little difference between all of them when you consider the amount of bronze keys it takes to equal each one and what you get from them.

Gold chests can be beneficial when you are running out of space.

Either you can leave the game and rejoin, or the better way is to always hold on to one ticket. Then you just visit a farm without collecting anything and return, that way it doesn't consume the ticket but reloads your farm

I would claim that first 1-star card, then I would save up nine of them. Set the last one to the side, and merge 8 cards up to a 3-star (skipping completely over the 2-star upgrade). After you upgrade, that last card can be exchanged for gems
-# note, you cannot have more cards on the ground than can be merged up to a 3-star
