It's very similar when you calculate it by the quantity of bronze keys it takes to five merge to the various levels

If you open gold chests, you'll tend to use less space, but silver chests are probably the best way to go usually unless you are running out of space. Bronze chest just make a ton of mess with all the low tier items that come out of them

No. If you have enough cards on the ground to merge up to a 3-star, you won't get any more cards.
If you're wanting to get extra gems from them, you'll have to shovel one of those 2-star cards, then get three more 1-star cards. Set one to the side and five merge the others

Yes, as long as you don't claim the upgrade, but I don't think it's worth doing that for the 90 gems. I think you would get gems faster from opening chests than the amount of time it takes to get a 3-star card. Totally up to you though haha
