you will only get enough cards to form a single 3-star anyway, so might as well get the upgrades as soon as possible

to me, the optimal strategy looks like - upgrade to one star when you get the card, merge 3 and upgrade to two stars, then merge 5 one stars for 2 2-stars and then 3 more one-stars to get the 3 stars

and then hope to get lucky when you create the 3-star upgrade for some gems 💀
