I’ve been rewatching GoT since AKOTSK has come out and the later seasons are even worse than I remember, and I already had a low opinion of them.

royal blade
#

I’ve always heard (well, probably at least mainly) from people that season 5 is when things started to get shit. But I always thought season 7 was when it turned to shit

#

What do you think? Is it the last couple seasons or even earlier for you? @plucky fog

plucky fog
#

Seasons 5 and 6 had so much wrong with them but they at least had high highs. 7 and 8 are practically unwatchable. Right now I’m getting through probably the only decent episode in S8 (Episode 2: A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms), and that’s really all it is at best: decent.

#

When I rewatch I normally stop at the end of S4 or S6. This is the first time since the series ended that I’ve forced myself to get through 7 and 8

plucky fog
#

On a side note it's hilarious that a new trailer for HotD dropped right after the AKotSK finale and no one gave a shit

royal blade
#

Lmao yeah

#

Honestly couldn’t care much less about HotD now that we have aKotSK

#

I actually didn’t think HotD s2 was that bad but this new show is just absolutely peak

#

What’s your overall opinion on HotD s1? I always held the opinion that it was just as good if not better than early GoT, but honestly I haven’t watched any GoT in seven years lol so I realized that I may be biased

plucky fog
#

The writers did well with the dialogue since there was pretty much none to adapt from the book.

#

I don’t think it’s as good at GoT 1-4 but it’s better than 5 and 6

royal blade
#

Lmao so real

plucky fog
#

I'm at S3E8 and it's still as terrible as I imagined. I waited until the dead of night so that I could watch this without any impeding light, and on a higher quality TV than what I had when the episode first aired.

#

...It's still garbage. It 100% is made to look super grainy in order to hide the CGI budget and mediocre choreography, mostly the former.

[Story Time] The worst part is that when I saw it for the first time I was willing to forgive it.
I worked in a movie theater at the time, and due to my schedule I'd work the closing shifts. Along with me, one of the managers was a big GoT fan. (Turns out he was even bigger fan than I was since he ended up naming his first child Arya, and this was even after S8 aired. The last time I spoke to him he was still a S8 defender)

We would make sure we were both scheduled the closing shift on Sunday so that we could watch the final season of Game of Thrones in the theater once our shifts have ended. This manager was by far the one most proficient with the projectors, so he was able to jerry-rig his phone with HBO Max to the largest projector in the building for an unforgettable experience.

Once The Long Night aired, I assumed the low quality was due to a bad cell signal coupled with the pixel loss you could expect from projecting from an iPhone screen to a 40ft x 60ft canvas. I was wrong when I got home. Even in the pitch black of 3 a.m. 90% of the episode was as grainy as a beach. I watched it again at home and another time after, not out of enjoyment but disbelief that they'd release something in the most literal sense unwatchable.

I wish I worked there sooner, because we could've done that for earlier seasons if I had. Regardless of it being one of the worst seasons of television history, I have fond memories of each and every episode due to our 1am view parties on the big screen.

royal blade
#

That is really cool to have watched that show on such a big screen with such insane audio. What a shame those later seasons were so shit though, and you couldn’t watch the earlier seasons in that same setting

#

I remember watching the early seasons of GoT and just being so enthralled. It really felt so special to experience that. It was like how I felt when I first watched LotR, and similarly how I now feel first watching Denis Villeneuve’s Dune.

#

Reading the aSoIaF books for the first time I got that same feeling. Nothing quite like experiencing something for the first time

plucky fog
#

I’ve moved on to rewatching HotD. Imagine if Laena had the same bullshit as show Daenerys and was completely fireproof while doing her suicide by Vhagar

Still my favorite HotD meme, and it was made even before the show came out

On S2E1 and the first scene is with Cregan Stark and Jace at The Wall. Cregan mentions that The Wall “wasn’t built to keep out snow and savages”, but was built to keep out “death”. So even he, the lord of Winterfell, not a member of the Night’s Watch, knows that the White Walkers pose an immediate threat, only a mere 132 years before the events of GoT.

He or his maester definitely would’ve written something down. Something that Maester Luwin definitely would’ve found since he’s: 1 - One of the only maesters in 100 who’s received his chain in studying the Higher Mysteries. Something like this is specifically in his field of interest
2 - The maester at Winterfell and a notorious records nerd who makes a copy of every scroll received at the castle. Someone like that would’ve looked back at the records in the castle in his 17+ years at Winterfell.

plucky fog
#

I’ll give the writers this: almost 17 minutes in (including intro, previously on, etc.) Aegon walks into his room and sees one of his fraternal twin children who at this point look identical. He only needed a fleeting glance in order to tell one from another and ask “Where’s Jaeherys?”

Blood and Cheese in the show happens because they can’t tell which child is which because they truly look identical. Even as much of a shit Aegon is, he did love his children enough to recognize the smallest of differences in them. His reaction after Blood and Cheese does show the love he had for his children. It’s like he’s a mix of Cersei and Joffrey.

"a mere 132 years." 132 years in a time period before mass media, before photographic evidence, before print, where constant civil wars have led to constant destruction of records, and where factionism had led to the stigmitization of other regions, such as the North, where everyone thinks they're goofy superstitious people who worship wacky tree-gods instead of the "real true seven gods." 132 years where people have started to doubt dragons even existed.

#

The Long Night was so long ago that the Maesters at the citadel don't even actually KNOW how long ago it was lol. They don't know if it was 2,000 years ago, or 8,000 years ago.... I remember there being a part of Sam's chapter in AFFC he goes on a lengthy monologue about how no one in the Citadel could really know what was going on since the records being taken of things there make little sense, like knights existing before knighting, and kings reigning for hundreds of years, etc.
