It’s got to be Super Mario Galaxy.
The game has a lot of magic to it and every single level is pretty much engraved into my brain.

Why is it my favorite game? There are multiple reasons for that.

You see, in Germany the rating for the game is 6+. Back when it released I wasn’t nearly old enough to play it, so my dad sat down with me in front of the TV and he played it for me instead. I still remember him reading the texts out to me because obviously I wasn’t able to read for myself. So yeah, lots of nostalgia.

Another reason is the fact that the game perfectly captures the loneliness of space. In games like the new Star Wars Outlaws or No Man’s Sky the places always look pretty crowded. And maybe so do the galaxies in Super Mario Galaxy, but then you turn around and… there’s just nothing. Of course, some galaxies feel exciting and what not, but then again there’s just this perfect sense of loneliness in the game. In the sequel, Super Mario Galaxy 2, the galaxies feel more like levels and the focus shifts more towards platforming, but the first game perfectly captures the feeling you want out of a game like this.

And last but not least it’s the whole backstory part for Rosalina. It’s just perfectly written in every single way and the reveal about what happened to her mum just hits different.
