I'm looking forward to Clean and OOTW the most because those are my 1989 songs. I think a lot of fans relate to Clean for various reasons, with a wide array of personal interpretations: from being clean from a bad relationship to being sober when dealing with addiction. But for me I view in within the frame of my gender transition. 🏳️⚧️
“It was months and months of back and forth” I spent so long in therapy and in private searching my soul and memories and emotions before I could come to terms with my identity.
“You're still all over me like a wine-stained dress I can't wear anymore” This hits me the hardest because I am male and used to force myself into dresses when I thought I had to live as a woman. But I can no longer live that lie. I wait for the day I can get top surgery to free my body of parts I never wanted and can no longer carry the burden of.
“Gone was any trace of you, I think I am finally clean” I am freeing myself of the old identity that never fit me, never felt real. I am out and living my truth now. I’ve made so many steps including legally changing my name and gender designation. 💙
