#Troubling Delight Redesign Pitch.

This model of the greatsword seems rather underwhelming feel-wise. It's just a bootleg ranger weapon that sometimes functions as a stat-stick for casters. I want to suggest something that would let it stay a real greatsword + make it a viable caster/ranger weapon.

The meat and potatoes of the suggestion is I propose to make it so the upgrade still keeps its normal swing, but afterwards it will shoot out a magic missile in the direction of the nearest enemy. Whirlwind shoots out 2. That way it will keep some of that lovely greatsword oomph that comes from the melee strikes while still being useful as a caster tool. Below you will find my... attempt at conveying the idea through the visual medium. I hope it's sufficiently clear.

Additional optional suggestions include:

  • The sword's damage now partially benefits from Magic Damage (alternatively: Fully benefits from magic damage but no longer benefits from physical damage)
  • The sword's attack speed now partially benefits from Magic Haste (alternatively: Significantly benefits from Magic Haste but no longer benefits from Attack Speed)
  • The sword now stacks an "Arcane Flux" debuff that makes the enemies more vulnerable to magic damage. Magic orbs apply 1 stack, sword strikes apply 2-3 stacks. Enemy takes 3% more magic damage per stack. Max number of stacks = 10.
  • The sword's attacks now receive minor benefits from your highest elemental damage type.

Hope you consider it. I love greatswords and lizard has been my favorite character so far, but simply using this thing as a plain stat stick without getting to swing it around properly anymore has felt a bit hollow.

I'm earnestly flattered.

# crystal grail be cooler if it was a constant beam you point at enemies.

I think that a purely ranged beam cannon would be better off as a crossbow upgrade. When I'm choosing a greatsword - it's because I want to use a greatsword. While something like the sword+shield wand has a reason to exist because of the blocking functionality, greatswords are nothing but attack patterns.

why there's two step 3?

The beam will sweep like a blade.

tall pond

If it's the same as Askard's beam visually, it won't sweep like a blade, it will sweep like a continuous beam cannon.

Oh, so it's the afterswing orb that does the lasers, not the svord itself. Aye, I don't see a problem with that being an alternative.

Maybe our effects could be combined for more flair and style. Instead of the orb spawning at the beginning of the swing arc and following it, you could have my "swing arc coalesces into the orb" thing and then this orb would cleave with the laser in an arc opposite of the swing's direction, so you kinda fight with these flashy cross-strikes, swinging in one way and death-raying in the other.

Sort of like a second sword that extends the arc.

#

It also means you can stack both the sword strikes and the Lazer if you hit with the tip of the blade.

Ye, it's a neat idea. Though the balance aspect does worry me quite a bit.

A sweeping beam like that would need either appropriately low range or appropriately low damage so it doesn't just nuke rooms, which could step on its toes when it comes either to supplementary ranged damage (if the beam range is the chosen nerf) or single-target DPS (if damage is). And I'm a real big fan of single-target DPS. I'd be real mad if I was told my mage sword would only properly function as a room cleaner and be hampered as a boss dueler.

Perhaps the default redesigned Troubled Delight should stay a homing single-target projectile like mine, and then an extra svord could be introduced to its upgrade branch that upgrades the orb into a beam sweeper? Or just redesign Pristine Form to do that.

Regarding the location of the sweeper: If the orb follows the tip of the arc, it could potentially be a bit too janky to control your positioning with it to maximize damage, especially in the heat of the battle where you have the "not dying" aspect to worry about. Plus it could also result in additional difficulties when it comes to that music sheet thing. It's another reason I want to have the option of staying with the single-target homing orb - more straightforward and reliable. Maybe you should have the sweeper draw an arc near the character instead of along the tip of the swing arc so it's less janky to benefit from in close quarters.

I should fix it but I'm scared of screwing up the formatting in some way. I don't have the best relationship with threads on discord.

If it's similarly short range and therefore high damage - I wouldn't have a problem with that.

crystal grail
#

Like a second sword does a disjointed slash. Same range as the sword itself but bigger arc.

tall pond
#

Figured it should have at least a bit of ranged functionality left in it by default as a compromise for other players who use it as a laser pointer, since that's what the weapon currently is, but I don't care about ranged functionality, I'm completely fine using a beefed up full melee weapon as a caster.

The pristine form cast 2 echo blades that do 75% of the swords damage. And the legacy of the illusionist fires a sweeping laser in the arc of the slash that does 50%.

tall pond
#

I'd rather have Legacy of the Illusionist do the 2 echo blades, provided that I get to keep at least a part of the magic haste bonus from the current version. Would make it more fitting thematically too, illusions, afterimages, etc.

#

I want this thing to be a battlemage's choice, so I don't want to let go of the caster bonuses completely. Just want the weapon to be more involved in the fight than it currently is.

crystal grail

Or maybe at least as long as they replace it with another caster bonus.

#

I sure as hell wouldn't expect them to give me 50% Magic Haste on a sword that does 150% more damage and possibly benefits from caster stats if they like that idea enough.

crystal grail
#

Ok I guess the prestine for the it'll just cast a sword that repeatedly strikes and then shatters into a ball of energy.

crystal grail

Ye, I'd actually be totally fine with ditching the whole afterswing orb concept I pitched and just having a pure melee echo-strike blade, assuming it still ends up being optimal as a melee caster weapon.

I’m a huge fan of getting some summoner based weapon upgrades like the way they implemented the new laser sword, here’s hoping we get a summon based upgrade for more of them.

tall pond

Either way, I was hoping for actual melee swinging to be a thing with ranged pewpews serving as auxiliary damage, plus the caster mechanics if possible. The 3rd svord is still a laser pointer according to what I saw in the description. So ye, I got punked real good.
