#Games with updates: page for the initial release?

Hi! I wanted to bring up a topic that has been on my mind for a while now. It is a bit hard to put it into words, so please forgive me if I ramble too much or if I don't explain myself correctly.
I love the fact that the site supports Updates. I enjoy having data for the different stages that a game has gone through. However, I have noticed an issue with this system: games with updates always have a base/release version which doesn’t have a page for itself in IGDB. The main game page is usually used for the game as a whole, not for the base version in itself. So, when users want to review or do something else with the base version of these games, they do not have a page to do so, both in IGDB and in sites which use IGDB’s data, like Backloggd.

I think this will be clearer if I provide examples:

  • Final Fantasy XIV: the main game page is used for the entire game, but there is not a specific page for Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn (the base game/expansion), so people have resorted to using the collector’s edition for their reviews of A Realm Reborn (https://www.backloggd.com/games/final-fantasy-xiv-a-realm-reborn-collectors-edition/) —that way, they can rate ARR and FFXIV separately— and for their lists/tops (https://www.backloggd.com/u/CamaFox/list/ff-xiv-patch-order/). However, not all games have collector’s editions for their base game for this kind of workaround.
  • Genshin Impact: again, the main game page includes screenshots and trailers from the multiple versions of the game, not only from Version 1.0. I think that having a page for Version 1.0 would be beneficial in order to keep track of the game’s history and for people to have the option to review the base game separately from the game as a whole. In this case, for example, there is no collector’s edition of Version 1.0 for users to take the same approach as with FFXIV.

These are just a couple of examples, but I can think of a handful more, and there are probably more than I am unaware of.
So, I was wondering: is there anything we can do to work around this issue? Could we maybe create an update page for the base game/version?

This is an interesting point. I will discuss with the team on this!

We need to have a deeper discussion around this, we have a meeting scheduled for next week to discuss deeper topics like this one. I'll make sure to update you when we get to discuss it!

Sure, thanks for letting me know! ^^

i personally think it'd become cluttered af to manage every update for damn near every game (especially since the game's wiki usually does that).

GG @lyric radish, you just advanced to level 3!

but if it was a section on the page rather than a separate one it'd be easier to manage.

And regarding the topic, would we then differentiate updates from simple patches?
Would patches be a section within the game page itself and updates being a separate page to be linked to the original game?

Hi! I just wanted to do a quick follow-up on this. I'm planning on updating the pages for Genshin Impact's and Honkai Star Rail's updates this week, and I was wondering if I should gather material and create assets for versions 1.0. (No worries if there's no news yet, but I thought it wouldn't hurt to ask)

Not yet, we haven't been able to discuss this yet as we've been very busy with Gamescom. It will be discussed and I will give an update when that happens 🙂

Cool, thanks again for considering it! 😊

After discussing with the team this morning (I didn't think we'd make it to this topic, but we were on fire today!) we feel that the base game page is largely treated as the 1.0 release. In the case of A Realm Reborn, Square Enix changed the name of the base game to simply "Final Fantasy XIV", but we do track "A Realm Reborn" as an alternative title for it. In the case of Genshin Impact, now that the updates have been added, it's likely the base page needs some cleanup, as we don't want to track screenshots and trailers for updates on the main page.
