Salvaging older 360 HDD for use

Hello there. If I were to take out a slim Xbox 360 HDD, use it as external storage for my PC for a while, and had it back in to the xbox 360, would the Xbox 360 still detect and format it, or does the HDD have the system to begin with?

And is there anything I need to be concerned about during the process? I'm also not concerned about the outer case. If I can't take it out, I'll just leave it as is.

3. I did try searching for the issue in reddit and on the threads here beforehand, but I got no definitive answer about how the xbox would act after putting the HDD back in.

I also don't know the exact model number of the xbox, but I can provide it if needed
