Hello,

I'm experiencing an issue with the game capture feature on my Xbox Series X since the latest update. I have enabled captures in the settings, but I am unable to record what happened or start a recording manually.

Here are the steps I've already taken to troubleshoot the issue:

  1. Ensured the "Allow game captures" option is set to "Captures by me or games".
  2. Checked that there is sufficient storage space.
  3. Performed a power cycle of the console.
  4. Cleared the local cache by unplugging the power cord.
  5. Verified that my console is up to date with the latest system updates.
  6. Reinstalled the Xbox app.
  7. Conducted a factory reset while keeping my games and apps.

Despite these steps, the capture feature still does not work.
Has anyone else experienced this issue since the latest update, and are there any additional troubleshooting steps or fixes available?

Thanks!

Since when has this been happening to you? Because I haven't been able to record properly since May, and the previous year I was recording in 4K HDR without problems.

Sometimes I can capture a video, but it usually ends up in corrupted videos, it is not an isolated problem because a fix has not been commented on it and there are posts in official Microsoft forums, Reddit, etc.

If you are capturing to an external drive, recommend you try changing the capture location back to internal. Many, many drives are not sufficiently fast enough to capture continuous video and it has caused many problems. Recent updates should start flashing error messages if this is detected.

@worldly gull What do you mean by not working? Does the option to capture not appear at all when you open the Guide? Does it pretend to capture but never save?

i dont realy remember.

#

but now. I can store on my console videos up to 10 min long as usual.

#

and for my it's ok. for now.

#

i don't say i like it, it was more comfortable to store it on the external storage, but I hope this "bug" will be resolved soon.

So the root source of the drive issue is drive or connection speed. Previously the video would get recorded faster than the drive could write and then things would get gummed up. That would cause future captures to fail or the captures app to spin. Now it will fail out with a message and stop recording before things are allowed to gum up. The short answer though is that things will probably never work reliably with the particular drive / cable that is causing you problems and you should look for one that is rated higher.

In my case I use a 512GB crucial SSD with a modern USB 3.0 casing, a few months ago I tried another SSD and another casing. I took them out of the gaming PC since I migrated to an m2.

Tomorrow I will try to run crystaldisk and some writing speed tests, but last year I recorded hundreds of videos on the console, including 4K that I uploaded to YouTube using the same hard drives. For a few months now I have barely been able to record 10 hours. I don't remember having any problems before May.

They also don't show error messages or notifications on the screen (so I don't really know when it stops recording). Any log to check or to know when it is "enough"? I have not located official documentation on this topic, but if someone can provide me with it, I would calmly review it, including technical files and debug logs. With 1080p recordings I also have problems.

Today I restored to factory (complete erase, configuration from 0) and I have also had problems, the first recording seems perfect but later ones can be susceptible to not showing notifications and cutting off resulting in corruption or not stopping recording even after reaching the recording time.

I will also try to look for an old USB device or limit it with a low quality cable to see if I can see the speed or other error messages.

I need to record long 4K videos so using internal storage is not an option as it is limited. It was the reason for buying the Series X and not the S.

I think a 4K video consumes approximately 18000kbps of data transmission, which is I think a little more than 18mbps, or 2.25 MB/s. Or at least that's the little information that VLC gives me. In 1080p.
What's more, now that I look, how come they aren't recording games like Diablo IV in 4K? o.o
That's another problem that I hadn't noticed until now.

TEST CrystalDiskMark (5 1Gib MB/S) with that SSD with that case and same cable plugged in, values in MB/s of Reading - Writing:
SEQ1M Q8T1: 771.75 - 454.64
SEQ1M Q1T1: 339.88 - 382.52
RND4K Q32T1: 120.74 - 132.53
RND4K Q1T1: 21.34 - 32.85

Is this enough to not have problems recording 1 hour gameplay on Xbox Series X?
