I think I'm going back to 1080p gaming. 1440p is nice but I like how much performance can be gained just from dropping to 1080p. 4K in my opinion now looks really stupid considering it will be even heavier than 1440p

been messing around with The Division 2 some more and at 1440p with Hardware Unboxed's settings my system (5600X, 32GB 3600MHz ram and a 5700 XT) struggles to maintain 60 FPS. Those same settings but at 1080p I'm way above 60 FPS. So much so I set the game to maxed settings and still managed to maintain over 60 FPS. Still upgrading my GPU but this is interesting, at least to me

the specific display would be called "2k" or something, although im not aware of tvs there are plently of monitors, and 4k tvs would have the ability to do 1440p aswell, and it still gives thebenefits over 1080p

i just made a refund request for mordhau after buying it on release and loving it.
I only recently (2 days ago) made a return to it only to see it become a shadow of its' former self.
The technical side of the game is very unstable, with it crashing frequently not only on custom maps, but on the official ones as well. Performance is severely unoptimized, with recommended-tier system struggling on Low.
The playerbase is now majorly consisting of closet cheaters and smurfs, who openly admit it due to the game's lack of any anti-cheat system whatsoever.
Racial/gender slurs in the chat are on the minute-basis.
The main gimmick of this game is broken too, which is melee medieval combat. It is better than Chivalry's, but it's more exploitable than that one.

idk how to put it in more simple terms but some of these 5600X and 5800X CPUs were 5900X and 5950X that failed to qualify as those CPUs due to some issue or another with one of the two CCDs that would have been active. AMD have disabled this seemingly defective CCD but people have uncovered these CPUs exist and are no doubt trying to find a way to enable this disabled CCD to see how it performs

Basically 5900 and 5950s that weren’t good enough got turned into the 5600 and 5800

This is common practice for most cpu manufacturers. Intel has been doing it for decades

btw, speaking of cooling. I'm pretty impressed with the air cooler I bought. Seems to be managing my 5600X pretty well. Temperatures hardly exceed 60C (stock) for comparison my 6700K that was on a 240mm AIO was only around 5-10C cooler.
That's a 5+ years old, quad core CPU that boosts to 4GHz vs a few months old, hexa core CPU that seems to have no trouble having all cores boost up to 4.6GHz. I was half expecting this Zen 3 CPU to be melting my cooler

no AIO cooler was a good move too imo. Don't think I could see myself using an AIO again in a hurry. At least if and when a fan fails they are inexpensive to replace but an AIO cooler is 5x or greater still the cost of most case fans and has liquid that one really wouldn't fancy exposing to the hardware in a case

and oh boy! awkwardly though I seem to be taking a liking to 1080p gaming again. Even on my 1440p monitor. 1440p pushes my 5700 XT just a little too much for my liking but 1080p is just right it would seem. I can set games to maxed settings again and see FPS that still exceeds 60. Often reaching into triple figures. Now I get why esports gamers prefer the lower resolutions but I don't think I could see myself drop to 720p

You’re running max but also chasing frames, it’s counterproductive to what you’re looking for

You should try maybe chasing a medium high blend that satisfies your visual desires but still yields great performance.

For me, I run BF2 on a custom mix of things anywhere from ultra to completely off depending on the settings

I used maxed settings as an example. Games that have some sort of optimization video I can go off I will drop certain settings down a notch or two if it barely impacts immersion but saves on performance. Looking at the likes of volumetric fog and shadows

ray tracing is also included though I don't yet own a ray tracing capable GPU. Even when I do get my hands on one I'm not likely to touch it. Would prefer it gets to the state where features like DLSS are no longer required to fix the performance loss ray tracing brings. I can happily wait for that generation of GPUs to arrive

The performance impact will never be negated because the better that tech becomes, the better performance the classic lighting methods will have alongside it

When the day rolls around that you can get 8k60 ray tracing with no draw backs, those same GPUs will be capable of 8k180

And by then your standard and expectations will increase accordingly and you’ll be in the same mindset you are now

I just want to target as high a frame rate I can without dropping too many settings that may impact how the game looks. A sort of fine balance between visuals and performance. If that means sticking to 1080p I don't really mind tbh. I believe ray tracing performance will improve but there is a lot more that can be ray traced still and improved upon and annoyingly that will impact performance still

Hey all, my game bar is acting weird, whenever I open it in a fullscreen game I am able to press the record button for halfa second but then it grays out and says "gaming features aren't available"

revisited Metro Exodus with my new CPU and an AMD GPU and I forgot how much Nvidia gameworks can wreck performance on non-Nvidia hardware. Having watched Hardware Unboxed's graphics optimization guide on the game I disabled tessellation and hairworks and lowered the quality setting from extreme to ultra. These tweaks can apparently expect to see a 50-60% performance increase in both average FPS and 1% low FPS. Which is HUGE

I wonder how these settings on a 6800 XT at 1080p with ray tracing enabled would do. Surely it is playable if I can get over 100 FPS on my 5700 XT under the same conditions, minus the ray tracing

eh, yeah. you might be able to hit 60fps in some cases. but Exodus is running older RT-implementations, so it's really just down to how well the GPU can process it

Surely more FPS than that. 100+ FPS on my 5700 XT with the stuff I mentioned. Throw those same settings on a 6800 XT that on average is almost double the performance of a 5700 XT in a lot of titles and surely it still manages to achieve a higher FPS than what I'm seeing on the RTSS OSD

so much so I'd consider upping the resolution from 1080p to 1440p

took a pic from my phone since I think I disabled the OSD from appearing in screenshots but this is pretty crazy on a 5700 XT (I think) also have HDR and radeon image sharpening enabled

I’m gonna follow up by giving you an actually educated opinion

If you go the prebuilt route, just be aware that the good quality ones will cost your more than building it yourself (sometimes even 300/400 or more) or if it’s a good deal, they may be cheaping out on certain parts like your motherboard or power supply. You also may just find a good quality one at a great price. You never know.

If you build it yourself, there’s some research you need to do on how to do that. If you just buy all your parts and try to put them together like legos, it’s not gonna be a good time. There’s full breakdowns on YouTube on how to fully build a PC from start to finish, usually they’re about 45min to an hour.

If you go this route, you can save some serious money and build it to be more personal in terms of function, and of course looks

You get your parts from anywhere the big stores sell them. So amazon, Newegg, b&h, etc

I recommend amazon for as many as possible because most of the other guys have big restocking fees if you need to return something

But first and foremost, pc gaming can be very expensive

You will spend more money over time than consoles. But your experience can be the best in the world if you put enough in. Right now I’d say if you’re intending on spending any less than $1200 for your pc, just buy a console and save your money. The next gen consoles are unbeatable for performance to value. A good $1000+ pc will just begin to match them.

Oh, and one more thing

If you choose to build your own, make sure you spend some extra money on good parts that will last a long time and leave room for upgrading in the future. Specifically fans, the case, and your power supply

Easiest example is instead of getting an average $80 power supply, get a high wattage and efficiency power supply for like $120 and then you’ll never have to buy another one for 10 years

Rather than having to replace that $80 one 3 years from now when you need to upgrade and you end up buying that $120 one anyway

Wish I believed that but when I updated the drivers for Nvidia Reflex or whatever, I started having some issues with CoD MW. It took my frames down from 140-160 to barely hitting above 145 at times. I may have figured it out but yeah, it does break things at times.

CPU cooling. I have a stock i7-9700k, I have a AIO that came with the PC when I got it from Cybertron before I had to switch cases cuz a wire was bad inside it and causing an error. So I picked a smaller case and then they came out with a GPU that is just a hair too big for it to properly fit. My 1080ti is right up against the back of my AIO.

yeah, you might want to consider air cooling then. Remove the AIO and it would free up some much needed space for your GPU. Doesn't have to be an air cooler too big either. Look at the likes of Arctic Freezer 34 esports duo, it's what I use and keeps my CPU pretty cool (stock too might I add)

I'd say that noctua cooler you are looking at is excessive. As good as they are you might have issues with cooler height and ram clearance in that case you have but I'd also say buying a new case isn't something to have to do as often as you have done. Well, worst case scenario is it's a case for my mom to build a new PC into. shrugs I usually get a new case when I get a new PC. The Gamdias one would have allowed easily for upgrades to be done but the wiring issue inside it made me have to switch forcibly.

I was lucky with my monitor upgrade. Went from a 1080p 144Hz G Sync monitor that cost me £400 back in 2016 to a 1440p, 240Hz, HDR600 and 10 bit monitor for £450 last year. The 240Hz might be a little excessive but I like the monitor

think the HDR on the PG259QN is HDR400 which many consider fake HDR since it is so close to the peak brightness often found on monitors these days (350 nits vs 400 nits). Obviously HDR allows use for greater colour spaces

might just be that you enable HDR on Windows and that's it, XLR8. Monitor probably does the rest by changing to a HDR friendly picture mode that likely locks out most, if not all the settings

for a while Nvidia had a ray traced shadow setting that was ridiculously demanding. HFTS. Ray traced shadows before ray tracing took off. I remember using them on The Division when I had a 1080 Ti and FPS got wrecked. Couldn't maintain 60 FPS on that game even at 1080p with a 1080 Ti! Think PCSS was similar but lower cost. Looked crap from what I remember of it. HFTS was stunning

If you need to run it on dx11. You will lose ray tracing but should eliminate crashes
