This new technology just feels like a placeholder for current and next gen games to show how much better graphics have become and to make a generational leap in a way that's not just hardware, it's not doing the greatest job at the moment, if this is optional for the Devs and also the players then that's fine, not every game should have to be photo realistic, in some games it shows improvements, others not so much

didn't run time spy but played some Cyberpunk 2077 for around 15 minutes at 4K + maxed settings (including path tracing) and CPU reached 53c, GPU 56c and SSD 38c - CPU: 9800X3D, GPU: RTX 5080 Zotac Solid Core and SSD: WD Black SN8100 4TB

(those temperatures were maximums pulled from HWInfo while playing

that wasn't high performance gaming, just shader compiling and it will usually have the CPU running at 100% usage for however long it needs to complete it. I've never timed it before but initial shader compiling (after installing a game, updating a game or driver) tends to take maybe 5 minutes? This time varies between games and the CPU used though and I believe more cores will allow it to progress even faster

Thanks and yeah, that little fan is now spinning! No thanks to Phanteks and their (lack of) instructions though. Sorting the cable is going to be pretty annoying as it required an adapter that has the VRM fan’s 4 pin PWM header and it extended the length of it along with having extra headers I won’t use. Don’t see why they didn’t just make the 4 pin PWM header standard (without requiring an adapter to get it connected)

HDR seems kind of messed up with Nvidia GPUs in general tbh. I've tried it on and off even watching YouTube videos in HDR and idk AMD done that a bit better imo (even though they have their own flaws as I believe with AMD, once HDR is enabled it gets passed through the Freesync Premium Pro pipeline. Don't think Nvidia does anything of the sort)

should add a bit more context on the AMD side with the whole pipeline thing. I believe it overrides some HDR related settings and tries to optimize it in a way AMD want it presented so if you could get two absolutely identical screens one with an Nvidia GPU and another with an AMD GPU and have them both use HDR you may end up noticing some differences with how AMD works and this Freesync Premium Pro pipeline is active, even if Freesync was disabled on the monitor itself

Plus don't feel like adjusting HDR to every game

I think in a realworld usecase many presets for DLSS5 in games will be toned down vastly compared to what was shown in the footage

Probably even unnoticeable, just better quality over DLSS4/4.5

The games will still have that "flat" "2D" appearance though so idk how they'll get around that

looking at the supported games list I see at least 3 in there I've played that will definitely benefit from much faster shader compiling times and the other features. Black Myth: Wukong, Borderlands 4 and Stalker 2. All 3 of those have a pretty lengthy shader compiling process and the only way to get through that quicker seems to be having a CPU with more than 8 cores - even Intel's E cores seem to count, though if they were scheduled properly game processes (and other demanding foreground processes) would be restricted to whatever P core count a CPU has while the E core manage background tasks. That is at least my interpretation on how Intel's P cores and E cores should work

haven't seen Intel have more than 8 (Performance) cores on consumer end since 10th gen iirc and that was 10 cores

uhh, I forget what the difference is but iirc RTX 50 series only supports monitoring of one GPU temperature metric so whatever that one is. Even HWInfo only reports the one metric for GPU temp. Let me bring this up quickly

playing around with fancontrol again as I found out I messed up a little with what fans went in what motherboard fan header. Nothing too serious but it does mean I needed to use fancontrol to create a bunch of graphs and select the correct temperature source they would be tied to and now my system is stupidly quiet when idle only thing I'm uncertain about is whether or not I should have done anything with the AIO pump as I was always under the belief they had to be run at 100% all of the time

that did have me wondering why there was 3 fans at 75% yet showing 0 RPM. You sure there are fans in use for those? I think FanControl can detect the number of fan headers on a motherboard but unless you have that header occupied with a fan (DC or PWM) it will likely show 0 RPM and no sensor synced to that specific control

I think it depends on how they're connected. On my other PC I have 7 normal fans, 3 gpu and 2 cpu. Only 3 are detected via the app so I can turn it up/down and I can hear them change 😅

I'm sure it is known by now but if not anyone who plays High on Life 2 via the Xbox app may not notice it but the game scales with Windows scaling setting so if you game at 4K and have scaling set to the recommended 150% it will instead run at 1440p. Unsure at this time if it affects other versions of the game but luckily it can be changed - just expect an additional performance hit after loading the game up again as it will now be running at 4K proper

something I will recommend is to avoid ASRock motherboards if going for an AM5 build. There seems to be a bug or something where their boards keep killing certain CPUs, as per this article https://videocardz.com/newz/one-asrock-board-allegedly-killed-three-ryzen-7-9800x3d-cpus-in-four-months

not sure but the game doesn't seem as demanding as many other Unreal Engine 5 games tend to be plus my system is on the higher end and that's what I'm basing it around mostly so other hardware may say otherwise 😅

I cranked everything up to cinematic at 4K and epic on the ray tracing with DLSS set to performance and usually get between 80-100 FPS for some further context. 9800X3D, 32GB DDR5 and an RTX 5080 though so that is pretty much near the top end in terms of current specs. 4K with DLSS set to Performance will bring internal resolution down to 1080p but it isn't quite 1:1 with actual 1080p as that will perform better still

one suggestion I will add though, don't enable Frame Generation on competitive games. You want the highest FPS and lowest latency possible on those games and contrary to what Frame Generation may show with the bigger FPS number it does introduce additional latency. Keep it for single player games

so far when enabling dynamic, up to 6x at 240 FPS target FPS reported latency via the Nvidia app's metrics overlay is lower than it used to be for 4x override in a game like STALKER 2 that in game only supports 2x Frame Generation. there is also the KF versions of the CPUs that are just the same minus the integrated graphics - which if you have a GPU, you don't really need - though can be helpful for troubleshooting. KF CPUs usually come in a little cheaper again

Used to be worse. I tested the old 4x override a while back, seeing as STALKER 2 doesn’t support multi frame generation (3x and 4x) in game and the latency shown then was in the 40-50ms range. Nvidia seem to have done more than just add 5x, 6x and dynamic multi frame generation options to achieve this lower latency even on a higher setting. Think Nvidia Reflex also got an update too

pretty sure that happens often with Windows 11 following a BIOS update and there was a fix for it but it has to be the most annoying thing to update BIOS and have the login pin not work and have to be reset

just watch out for Bitlocker as that could encrypt your data and will require a bitlocker key that is either tied to your Microsoft account or on a USB (or both) lose either of those and whatever data was on that drive may be locked forever with no way of recovery

and I don't think wiping the drive will remove it either

Word of advice for PC builders: double, maybe triple check your PSU connections. Even if you don't have one of the connectors that have been melting, a connection to i.e. your mobo can cause weird and hard to diagnose issues.

it should do but something many people easily miss tbh and there is a chance nothing will happen or on the otherhand a connector that had been improperly connected goes and melts or causes issues. All connectors should come colour coded at the ends so that people can tell if they see some of it showing it likely isn't properly inserted, a bit like my fight with the 12v-2x6 connector not that long ago but just beware that connector may have some force required to get it properly connected

speaking of that 12v-2x6 connector. So far no melting on my end though I do have a 5080 so that really shouldn't come as much surprise as while it can still happen to those, it seems less likely than a 5090 to happen but this connector really should have gone under considerably more testing before going public. Now gamers are becoming beta/stress testers with no formal invitation it seems. Why I say that is you hardly hear of any issues with Nvidia's prosumer stuff and I would think they too are on 12v-2x6. I know the RTX 6000 Pro Blackwell is and that is an even more outrageous GPU than the 5090 and so far, nothing about its connector melting

The importance of good HW encoding

Someone in here mentioned/implied encoders don't matter much when they're actually the backbone of your stream

Virtually any NVENC engine in nvidia cards at 30 series onwards can achieve the quality in image 2, same as 9000 series H.264 encoding and maybe the 7900XT/XTX. The left is pretty much the average direct-from-console stream with no capture card use so another device can take all the stream overhead

The scene in image 2 retains proper quality, colour and sharpness from what looks like miles away, even at motion

Another example from a direct-from-console stream on the same game showing terrible still/slow quality, ghosting and artifacting with what looks like really bad text fringing on the UI

reviews are up for the AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 and I would have linked one but the usual review source didn't seem to get one but there are reviews out there. Don't think this new processor is up to a whole lot so my recommendation remains. 9800/9850X3D for gamers if you want the best overall performance from a CPU. Going higher end (Ryzen 9) will only net you minimal gains, while also requiring the use of AMD's software scheduling leading to something of a minor headache to deal with and it will also cost more.
Gamers + content creators could go for either a 9950X3D/9950X3D2 or consider Intel's Core Ultra 7 270K Plus but keep in mind gaming performance may take some hit.

For some reason Phanteks more premium line of power supplies (Revolt series) falls back to PCIe 5.0 and ATX 3.0, which is probably no big deal tbh but those can go higher than 1200W and cost quite a bit more - especially when factoring in you need to buy separate cablemod cables for them too...

I still remember thinking I could get away with running a 7900 XTX on a 650W power supply from 2015 when I bought that shortly after it was announced (December 2022). I was all AMD between late 2020 up to August 2025 and thinking back I definitely upgrade hardware way too often as I would have started with a 5600X + 5700 XT, then upgrade the GPU to a 6800 XT then a 7900 XTX before then upgrading my CPU to a 7950X3D but have had a 9800X3D since shortly after it launched. Before going all AMD I had an Intel i7-6700K + 1080 Ti (that I since regret ever getting rid of 😭)

as long as I can afford to upgrade I don't think this habit will change either 😄 Love it when new PC hardware releases brings the big kid outta me every time (even throwing the odd hissy fit when i can't get something new due to lack of stock or price hikes lol)

I've gotten very lucky with binning on my 9070xt so I don't really have much desire to get an nvidia card unless it would be for encoding

I think it is highly unlikely I would go back to using an AMD GPU. One factor that pushed me away was the lack of FSR support in a lot of games and where it was supported implementation of it seemed to vary quite a bit (this was before FSR 4 I should say) and more recently AMD not offering any indication as to whether or not RX 7000 series was ever going to get FSR 4 support, which at this point the lack of support helped me make my mind up pretty fast as going from a 7900 XTX to a 9070 XT offered very little while wanting FSR 4

I can't remember if it was an Astral feature or Matrix only but I do seem to remember one, if not both those GPUs equipped with a built in spirit level (I think that is what they call them?) and you can check it out on ASUS GPU Tweak software

I thought 4 fans might have been rather overkill tbh. If I'm correct in how that configuration should work fan closest to the rear of the GPU should be pushing air towards the middle and the middle fan then accelerates that towards the right side fan for it to then be exhausted out with the top fan

Yeah it’s just to improve the thermals as best as possible

My fans directly underneath help a lot

It’s why my CPU is like 32-38c on load

And my GPU is usually around 40-49c

crazy low, yeah. Even with a more aggressive fan curve I use while gaming my 5080 can still reach around 55-60c and that is even with 3 case fans blowing air up into the GPU too. Because of the way my case is designed the GPU does become something of an obstacle as it is only those 3 fans pulling cool air into the case and being immediately swept up by the GPU

Yes I really really lucked out with this, it’s the first PC that runs this cool. Even with previous custom loops.
However I remember you have a Golden CPU based off previous TimeSpys however I haven’t yet seen a recent one when you switched to water cooling AIO.
Also, a simple Unvervolt can drastically reduce power and temps whilst improve performance.

I might explore undervolting some time but my GPU is a bit of an odd one as my friend stressed tested it some time back and for some weird reason under full load it wouldn't pass 1.00v. Mine and one other person he ran some tests on the same GPU seem to be like this lol. Means my GPU already runs with less power but idk if it is something I should really be concerned about or not, especially when someone who builds and tests PCs pretty much daily brought this up 😄
