Some of the more notable ones are the COD games

Anything newer than COD 4 but older than Infinite Warfare has multiple RCE related vulnerabilities for example

Cold War also used to have a vulnerability for a while but it got patched

Games made in Valve's Source engine are some other notable examples of games riddled with vulnerabilities

X3D can still be cooled with an air cooler. 7800X3D will run a bit hotter due to its design while the newer 9800X3D should run a bit cooler as AMD redesigned the positioning of the 3D V Cache, though either way CPUs today run pretty hot whether on Intel or AMD and that is mainly to do with boosting algorithms interacting with conditions such as cooling, temperature and power limits

That is true though going AM4 now seems to me a bit of a waste as there is no upgrade path - the only option after that will require a new motherboard and RAM compared to going AM5 now on a budget and you could later swap the CPU out for an X3D chip with minimal fuss (BIOS updates may be required)

Plus any cpu upgrade from am4 to am5 cost would be around the same amount from upgrading am3 plus to am4 which is a waste of money. Just do a mobo ram and cpu one time. Then can upgrade cpu later down the line

I would grudge using DLSS performance mode unless gaming at 4K as 1440p becomes 720p and 1080p becomes 540p internally rendered. Some developers may set the resolution scaling to their own figure, one such game that I know did/still does is Assassin’s Creed Shadows DLSS Performance was set as low as 25% in that game so those on Nvidia GPUs that can use DLSS Overrides in the Nvidia App may even want to override the in game model and DLSS resolution scaling percentage where supported that way rather than expect every implementation to be 50%. Using the latest model from the override option may also improve performance a little more too

Counter to the earlier answer, I suggest that the Ally does this with some third party power supplies even if they have enough power and are good quality. Mine is the original RoG Ally, but the same problem.

Cheap adapters are a problem, yes. They can overheat and not deliver the wattage they say. So yes. I don't own an Ally X so can't say for sure.

I don't hate Unreal Engine 5 either but I do think devs could do with trying to optimize their games on PC a little better. Their reliance on upscaling and frame generation to get them out of a mess is pretty clear to see sadly and is becoming something of a norm with games released that make use of Unreal Engine 5

what I find crazy is a lot of recent releases don't even use path tracing and are this poor performing even on hardware you'd expect to run just about anything you could throw at it and if I'm not mistaken most of the time its a software based implementation of Lumen, which should be the least demanding of the three Lumen options (software, hardware and full/path tracing)

those on RX 5000 or 6000 series AMD GPUs will still receive updates, like the latest 25.10.2 driver but going forward they will lack day one game support and also install a different driver branch. 25.10 instead of 25.20 that RX 7000 and 9000 series GPUs will install and they will continue to receive day one game support

5 years seems a bit too soon to be dropping day one optimizations and the article even went into some detail saying there was a RX 6000 series GPU as recent as 2023 so users of such GPU from only two years ago are already seeing diminished driver support. Never seen anything like this in the near 10 years I've been gaming on PC. Driver support seemed to be solid for a good 7-8 years. AMD dropping day one game optimizations for RDNA 1 and RDNA 2 means those GPUs have lasted anything between 2-6 years

sometimes I have to remind myself that the 5080 is a 16GB card but luckily I've rarely ran into issues as I don't mind using DLSS set to performance mode (or 50% render resolution) at 4K as that will help reduce VRAM usage and improve performance in games with only a slight visual hit

hasn't been much of an issue in games I've tried it in. Borderlands 4 for instance VRAM was less than 13GB usage and that was at 4K, maxed settings with DLSS set to performance and Frame Generation set to 4x (Nvidia Reflex enables itself when enabling Frame Generation too)

the type of game Fortnite is msot probably keep the settings low so something like that hardware combo definitely should be fast but whether the 9800X3D can actually keep up with all that is another story lol. There will come a point where the GPU throws so much FPS at the CPU it can't handle it but from what I can tell at least, the 5090 isn't quite there

I'd probably go with more storage. Would recommend you look at 2TB.
As for cooling, the 5600X with the stock cooler should do a decent enough job. Though if you feel it isn't you don't have to break the bank for a cooler as Thermalright do some that the PC community seem to swear by but as always do some research first. I can speak from first hand experience with the 5600X as I owned one for a time between late 2020 and early 2023 and it was a pretty cool running CPU, though I was using another cooler and not the one out of the box

hey @dusky wave just out of curiosity, what motherboard does your brother have? Both RTX 50 series and RX 9000 series GPUs seem to have an issue with Gen 5 PCIe and the fix is to go into the BIOS and change the PCIe x16 slot from auto (or Gen 5) to Gen 4. So far I haven't ran into the issue but I have encountered quite a few on Discord that have had to apply said fix and I hear it may come with a slight performance penalty

I'm not quite sure how to describe it but people do seem to be having issues with PCIe gen 5 and gen 5 supported GPUs. Could be certain motherboards that advertise gen 5 support but don't support it is causing issues for some. I think it was Gigabyte that got caught doing that not too long ago where some B650 boards were allowing gen 5 support while that was only meant to be supported with B650E and X670E or newer* and was later turned off by Gigabyte with a fairly recent BIOS update but otherwise I think Gen 5 has some signalling issues. Whatever it is, dropping PCIe x16 from auto/Gen 5 to Gen 4 in the BIOS appears to be a fix for those affected but it may come with a hit to performance, how much of said hit? idk

*B840 afaik doesn't support Gen 5 PCIe x16 but I do believe B850 offers optional support for it

When it comes to installing programs I find that only a very slim few will ask if you wish to install them for all user accounts.

Theoretically you could create a more uhh, neat way by installing it in your shared folder.

But yeah what I would do is. You can use your shared folder as the instal path for the launcher. Download the launcher on both accounts. Then you can have two logins one for each account that both access the same files.

Course I have no idea how the epic games launcher works but I do know how steam works and that's basically how it works.

You can rip a hard drive out with steam games on it. Throw it into a fresh computer with steam and just point it to the dir and it'll happily recognize all the games.

Another option is of course to use a separate drive for your games

That mitigates the use of the shared folder.

Tbh, most of the time it is optional to update the BIOS anyway. Unless there is good reason to do so stay on the version you are on. I’m not aware of any major announcements on AM4 where vendors demanded to update the BIOS, though after I upgraded to AM5 in 2023 I did lose track of stuff like that so who knows

AMD hasn’t gone and had a moment like Intel had with 13th and 14th gen where they do recommend you update in order to not kill your CPU - though if a CPU showed signs of issues regarding what happened the only thing for it was RMA as those BIOS updates wouldn’t help affected CPUs

It was turned off in the settings and should show off - just like DLSS and Frame Gen.

There was no frame rate limit on on that run I did.

It did correctly display it on one run and then a second run it bugged out and continue to say on but the settings said off.

I saw an article about that a little earlier and it had me wondering how a routine update, Windows monthly security update no less can affect a PC in such a way. I don't even know if I'm affected by it but now I'll be on the look out for poorer than usual performance in games I guess

Thats a gaming laptop sounds pretty solid with a mobile 4080. But keep in mind mobile gpus are weaker than their desktop counterparts

you might find Battlefield 6 will run better on the PC though saying that be sure you have secure boot enabled before you try it as that is required to run Battlefield 6

checking up the specs of the 4080 mobile and its specs would put it between a 4070 Super and 4070 Ti so still a pretty decent GPU
