figured out why Horizon Forbidden West was stuttering all over the place for me. Seems it had something to do with RTSS and the latest update for it has fixed it though now I got an odd issue where despite vibration being turned off it is still doing vibration things. I suspect it to be something on Steam's end as I was messing with the controller settings but idk for sure

oh, Rivatuner Statistic Server. I still use it to monitor performance of games while I play. I like to look out for those that aren't using the 3D V Cache cores of my 7950X3D or to spot performance issues and so far it has worked wonders for both. AMD's own metrics overlay doesn't go nearly as far as RTSS can when paired with MSI Afterburner and some added customization into the mix

sure but I want to make sure my hardware is performing exactly as I expect it to and if not I go exploring solutions. So far no game where I've had to explore solutions for has needed me to do anything drastic. Some games for instance may run on the 7950X3D's second CCD until I go into Xbox Game Bar and tick "Remember this is a game" and restart said game for it to apply. Latest fix involved simply updating RTSS to fix some heavy stuttering I was experiencing while playing HFW. Game was still playable but now super smooth

at this point with newer games I almost expect them to require the game bar fix. Idk if it is game bar itself that over time will be updated to add support for newer games or if this is a AMD chipset driver thing. Wondered that for like the past year or so that I've ran with this CPU

usually you diagnose after you notice major issues. otherwise why would you play games with the sole purpose of watching to see if something has issues.

ok, so I do some of that but I mostly play the games once I am happy like I am now

usually the game bar check can be figured out within the first start of a new game. If I spot that cores 17-32 (yes, I have RTSS configured to show me this) I go into game bar tick the option I mentioned above and restart that game and before I know it right back into it and cores behaving properly. Luckily most users don't have to worry about this. Just those with Ryzen 9 7900X3D or 7950X3D due to the software optimizations AMD implemented

New pc, 13700k, 4080 Super, DDR4 3600 mhz or ddr5 7800x3d, RX 7900 XTX

in terms of a system that has an upgrade path the latter one with the 7800X3D and 7900 XTX will offer more. 7800X3D is pretty much the best CPU when it comes to gaming at the moment and the 7900 XTX pretty much matches the 4080 SUPER in all but ray tracing performance making it joint second best GPU on the market (both being second only to the 4090)

I think it depends on what your preferences are. 13700K or 14700K will be better all around for other tasks outside of gaming so if it’s not just a pure gaming rig that’s something to consider. Also the feature set on Nvidia cards with DLSS and much better Ray tracing are big wins for Nvidia at the moment.

I would still go with a ddr5 board either way.

In gaming it can go either way depending on if the game is making use of the 3D vcache but 14700K is generally the better CPU as an all rounder

I wonder if it is worth suggesting the 7950X3D. Its got both 3D V Cache and faster frequency cores over two chiplets. Only thing is idk how it does for rendering times. It will be a little slower than the 7950X that is just two 8 core chiplets with higher frequency since the 3D V Cache chiplet's frequency is lower but you get true 16 cores and 32 threads. Intel tops out at 8 Performance cores with as many as 16 Efficiency cores. Only difference here is the latter are clocked much lower than the Performance cores and they also lack hyperthreading (in this case Intel's top CPU at the moment is the 14900K/KS - 8 P cores + 16 E cores/32 threads)

one thing to note if you do go Intel that you may need to change. Power limits on some motherboards may be set to unlocked, Should you see this you will want to change it to Intel spec/stock as unlocked power limits are not stock and it has been found out on both 13th and 14th gen Intel CPUs that running them unlocked could lead to stability issues and rapid degradation. Though it may only be limited to 13700K, 14700K, 13900K/KS and 14900K/KS

isn't good news. Even with EA Anticheat I was encountering cheaters in Battlefield 2042 games before I stopped playing it. Only reason it annoys me is they seem to somehow found a way to get around it (as usual) yet when I want to use programs like MSI Afterburner and Rivatuner Statistic Server simply to monitor performance as I play they are blocked. I guess that is to do with the kernel level?

Performance is near identical though in some individual results the 7800X3D was better and it wouldn't have any latnecy related issues that could come of the 7950X3D's two CCD. Though if it was a choice between only the 7900X3D and 7950X3D that is where I would recommend the latter all day

as zero said, start with a budget, then look in that budget for something visually appealing.

After that, you have some specs to work with to toss to someone.

Just blanket asking 'hey, someone toss a pre-built pc at me' isn't going to get much of anywhere as the market is so over saturated we could be here for hours.

If you're not doing anything hardcore, look for an i5 (intel) or ryzen 5 (amd) (amd is better cpu imo) cpu with a cheap, but still decent gpu.

You can totally get away with an older gpu, (last gen).

Make sure you're getting an SSD, 2 is best, one for OS, one for games

Everything else is basically up to your preference

Also, with Jade Empire being as old as it is...that's just something that comes with the territory. Main reason it works on modern consoles is because it was made to be. Running anything from that era on a modern PC runs a high chance of doing...something annoying.

As another example, back when I tried playing Riven (the sequel to Myst), it only opened a tiny window that I couldn't resize and couldn't change in any way. It was basically unplayable as I could hardly see what I was doing.

It's just...a thing sometimes, unfortunately.

Was the GOG version too, if I'm remembering correctly, so the version that should have been the most compatible with modern machines.

I had to look at how old that game was to understand and yeah. You are going to run into some issues unless there is a remastered version that may have brought it up to more recent hardware as the game will not be aware of how modern CPUs work and be heavily single threaded and there will probably be other issues relating to some GPUs too. Disabling cores to get certain older games to run feels like the modern version of the turbo button

I'd probably opt for building a retro system than going that route for certain older games as disabling cores may then have a negative effect on newer games. Have heard that doing this via CPU affinity can cause games (New and old) to crash to desktop. Sounds a lot of fun when it then comes to playing older games that have no idea what an AMD Ryzen CPU is (especially those that are multiple chiplets) or what P cores and E cores are and I'm not even sure if these games will allow Windows scheduling to apply the best core(s) selection - some of these older games may simply run off Core 1

@halcyon iris not a professional, but what i would do is first, completely remove all your audio devices via the device manager, sometimes a fresh install is better than trying to 'repair' which is what drivers tend to do with updates.

Second, once you install the fresh drivers you probably need to do some windows shenanigans to see if you can detect the newly installed 'device'.

After that, i'm afraid i'd have to do some googling

I doubt an Xbox running full phat Windows is gonna replace a desktop PC. Not in a million years. Xbox was built to run games, not Office. Probably best to let that be.

I pretty much do the same thing any time I look at buying a new graphics card. At the end of the day if you are looking at one specifically (say a 7900 XTX) regardless of cost you are still getting a 7900 XTX. Only major change would be in design and some AIB partners can really go to town with the premium they add and honestly I'm not sure it is worth paying that extra, could be money saved. That's how I picked the reference MBA (made by AMD) model as it was the cheapest and besides the very early drivers I've not been disappointed by how well it runs games at 4K maxed settings (without ray tracing). If I went ahead with the idea I had after AMD announced the 7900 XTX things could have been very different as I was looking at getting Sapphire's Nitro+ instead and iirc that would have cost me an extra £150-200 (at time of purchase) on the MBA I bought

my system's fan curves are just a straight rise from 0% to 100% with temperature. I call it the 1:1 fan curve. Can get loud but will lower temperatures somewhat. I'm also using FanControl program (that was recommended in this server a while back by Eris).
Only thing you don't see is my AMD GPU as support for them is kind of broken so to control its fan curve I had to use MSI Afterburner's fan control feature. Seems to help keep the noise down setting the case fans to run off the GPU temperature as idle it will be quieter than if set to run on the CPU fan curve I set up (by some 20%!) with only a gaming load able to make them near equal after a while

those temperatures are really good. Not sure I see an issue here. Even if your CPU was running at 95°C AMD say that it is operating as normal

certain tasks like going on YouTube and watching videos can also cause the temperature to spike. I've noticed that on my CPU (hard not to notice it with the CPU cooler fans ramping up like I'm playing a game). Only way to combat that I think is to turn off hardware acceleration - which I don't recommend because then you can no longer make use of certain features your CPU and/or GPU may support. Though saying this, if hardware acceleration uses features on the GPU how come the CPU still seems to be getting put to use? I wonder if there is a way to enforce that the browser uses the GPU (if that isn't already set by default) 🤔

yeah, I wouldn't worry about it too much. Modern CPUs will run pretty hot with how their boost algorithms behave. My 7950X3D is hardly ever below 50c idle and can reach around 70°C while watching YouTube videos. Only times I've seen it go higher than that was if I threw a CPU stressing benchmark like Cinebench R23 or a game that spikes it to 80+°C at it and in the case of the games side they only occasionally spike to 80°C+ before lowering back into 60-70°C range (though this is with a custom fan curve that to some may be over the top)

hopefully but I have some concern with the mention of upscaling. Really hope the reliance on this tech isn't going to take over to the point even those on the highest spec systems have little to no choice but to use it. FSR as it is currently isn't in a good place. It's the weakest of the three upscaling technologies as it doesn't (yet) offer AI enhanced upscaling like both Nvidia DLSS and Intel XeSS (only available when used with an Intel ARC GPU mind you). Saying that though, even the version XeSS falls back to when an Intel ARC GPU is not used is said to give better results than FSR and with the introduction of XeSS 1.3 recently it may be even better still. Only thing Intel XeSS currently lacks is Frame Generation

14900K power limited with some new options to combat the stability issues some users faced. Likely means all the previous 14900K/KS results are null since such a change could reduce any improvement the 14900K/KS had over the 7800X3D to single figures or null while the games the 7800X3D pulled ahead in may allow it to go a little further ahead. Hopefully motherboard manufacturers learn their lesson not to have some power unlimited option set out the box for either Intel or AMD CPUs going forward and those that wish to ignore the warnings around the instability should get hit with a warning where it would be considered overclocking and warranty would be void to use settings that are not within Intel spec, just as AMD do with their processors

Depends on what games you're wanting to run, your budget, and what you generally want out of the PC. If you're only playing older titles, you can probably manage that with higher-mid tier specs. If you want to player the bigger AAA stuff now and a few years down the road, you're gonna need to look at beefier hardware.

Personally I'm not a fan of trophy/achievement hunting. I just play games and if I like it enough I'll complete it and move on with really little to no care given to the achievement/trophy pop ups on screen along the way. That stuff should be optional

it seemed that not too long ago Spider-Man added some Playstation Network sign in feature but from what I understand that was mostly just for some add ons. There will always be a bottleneck somewhere depending on the game but in most cases something like a 4070 super will be ok when targeting 60 fps and higher graphical settings for 1440p or sometimes 4K. You can always upgrade the cpu later on.

just be sure when you do upgrade to clear out the drivers properly since you are going between AMD to Nvidia. Use AMDCleanupUtility (can be found under program files - AMD - CIM - Bin64) and then shutdown after it is done. Might want to also turn off internet access around this time just in case Windows tries to reinstall an AMD driver and also have the latest Nvidia driver ready to install after installing the 3080 into your system. Should be a pretty nice upgrade

Getting 70 - 90 fps with max settings on the 3080Ti at 1440p. With Vsync on it seems to lock at 60, no major dips so far 40 minutes in.

Vram usage is quite good usually about 5-6 GBs used

seeing up to 11GB VRAM usage on my end and around 40 FPS for the most part. Not sure whether to be disappointed or what as I certainly expected it to run better than that on my hardware. Rhinne already said his system runs at up to 90 FPS though the only thing I wasn't sure of is if he is using any upscaling as I'm not and there is no way the gap between a 4090 and 7900 XTX is that large. Will be interesting to see some benchmarks of this game to see what is going on but so far it seems to me like it is leaning heavily on favouring Nvidia hardware - the joys!

Mine is set to 4K resolution, but DLSS and frame generation enabled. Super resolution is set to quality. It's using just over 9MB of VRAM.

Average fps is around 90, with some sections going up to 110-115

I just turned off frame generation and now it's doing 160

I don't think I can use Frame Generation not seeing the option to when enabling FSR 3 only the usual presets but I can at least match your quality preset and see how different it performs then, just not really a fan of all this reliance on upscaling especially on GPUs we've both spent at least £1000 on (4090 is considerably more still) but yeah 4K and maxed settings (not counting ray tracing as that is a whole different beast) or not I'd still like to see most games pushing 60+ FPS with this kind of hardware

I don't know a great deal about any limitations around frame generation as just like upscaling I'm not a fan of it either, if anything I dislike frame generation even more than upscaling. Effectively faking a whole frame (or more) just to give the user the illusion that the game is running better while adding some latency Nvidia combat with Reflex. I'd rather just run games at native resolution

I'd try something like Arctic's Liquid Freezer III and get the largest one your case can support. 7800X3D is going to run pretty hot regardless of what cooler you use due to how its algorithms behave. There isn't a whole lot of difference between an air cooler and AIO cooler on AMD CPUs. If you feel it is too warm you could always upgrade the stock fans on the AIO later to Arctic's P12 Max or P14 Max as they have a higher RPM than the standard P12 or P14 that come with the cooler that might drop the temperature down a couple of degrees but again the CPU's algorithms will use all the available headroom it has either way

since setting FSR to quality I've gone from around 40 FPS to 65-75 FPS which is more like it but that will now mean I'm not playing at native 4K but rather something between 4K and 1440p that has been upscaled to 4K and then sharpened

as if things weren't already somewhat confusing with upscaling Intel's latest version of XeSS (v1.3) added some extra options. How many scaling presets does one upscaler need?! Even the usual ones (quality, balanced, performance and ultra performance) no longer follow the same scaling in resolution as those presets found on both DLSS and FSR

I only went 4K as it was the next step up from 1440p though I maybe made the jump to 4K a bit too soon. Now I feel there is no way in going back to 1440p my next upgrade will run games at 4K and maxed better I'm sure. Think I'll be bringing back the 60 FPS minimum target I used to go by though. New target is 4K 60+ FPS at maxed settings with no upscaling or frame generation active - including games with ray tracing support

As well 4090 or 4080/7900XTX are generally 4K cards as a target. 4070 Super is more in the 1440p range at similar settings

I’m running into an issue where my party chat does not want to connect if started from the Xbox PC app. It just says connecting… it works perfect in game bar. I have checked background and microphone permissions and they are both correct. Can anyone help?
