the only awkward thing about such a design is leaving it to the motherboard. Seeing the stand offs for the usual positions where you would secure a motherboard into place with all those connectors at the back really has me worry that if GPU makers take up this standard it will mean buying a whole new case. Almost like the whole power supply debacle after Nvidia showed off the 12 pin connector they are now using. For some a future motherboard upgrade may require more than just new RAM with it. New power supply and a new case too, which I find absurd. If it's going to happen ease these things in. idk, maybe target the enthusiasts for a generation or two then go more mainstream

Kinda surprised the boards are still fairly expensive. With Windows 10 ending support in 2 years time they will only be useful as offline machines or potentially Linux systems after that point

true, when you look at it like that. I had hoped DirectStorage would feature on every game released after v1.1 and 1.2 went public, especially on games yet to be released and on the other hand, kind of hoped games that already supported the tech similar to DirectStorage on Xbox would be enabled with an update shortly after. Hasn't gone like that. Afaik there is still only one game with DirectStorage support, that being Forspoken so right now it looks but a tech demo. Got a feeling we won't actually see it in proper/more frequent use until Windows 12 releases

Yeah maybe it will be more common in a couple years time but still wouldn’t be surprised if it was mainstream so I’m not too concerned about it currently. Would be nice to have though because it’s definitely an API advantage that consoles have which PC is paying by having much higher load on the CPU side.

I have 11 on my old PC as a dual boot just to play around with it. I don’t like how it takes more clicks to do the same processes and the start menu just sucks compared to 10. Hopefully 12 will address that.

There are ways around it using third party apps but shouldn’t really need to do that.

agreed and for me, being a sucker for new features I dropped Windows 10 as soon as Windows 11 released and other than a few instances where I went back to Windows 10 found myself sticking with Windows 11. One thing I won't do is enroll on insider programs as I still like to have a stable OS. Just like I won't normally install beta versions of updates in games etc so I do kind of draw the line with new features in some way 😅

I don’t think 11 is quite as bad as windows 8 in terms of UX but definitely a lot I would like to see improved before moving over.

Windows 8 was a nightmare without third party tools to fix the UI. I just stayed on 7 the whole time until 10 came out and was stable.

I tried Witcher 3 again on PC with the patch. Seems much more stable now, wasn't really encountering shader comp stutter anywhere near as much and FPS and frame times are improved on DX12.

I have no idea, actually! The only way I was using them was with Steam, and as you may know, Steam has its own way of handling those things. I don't know of any default Mac way of handling controllers, but that doesn't mean there isn't one.

Ow right, yeah steam input uses a keyboard E word to convert the key presses to button inputs like xpadder or joy2key on windows but a bit easier to use or it converts xinput to another controller. With the games I've tried on Mac it seems to be pretty hit or miss. Arkham and TR games seem to support the PS controllers out of the box without doing anything

likely be an 8 core CPU, 5700X and Intel's equivalent which is kind of hard to tell since they use E cores but traditionally would be an i7

technically there are no CPUs with more than 8 cores. With AMD you have multiple CCDs with 8 cores each (up to 16 cores and 32 threads with Ryzen 9 CPUs) and then on Intel you have 8 P cores that support hyperthreading along with as many as 16 E cores that don't support hyperthreading and run much slower than the P cores while totalling 24 cores and 32 threads

Cases generally do, but check to make sure. Whether they can be used on other cases would depend on the case and how they're attached. Generally you can remove them and put into another fan as they're fairly standard but may depend if you have some kind of special custom case.

I find there is nothing wrong with Epic, beats waiting a year on exclusives to go on Steam if there is a game on sale that you want to play. Done just that with Dead Island 2. drivers early on were hit and miss but has been greatly improved since. Only things the 7900 XTX really lacks is the ray tracing performance (which to some isn't really that big of a deal) and DLSS. AMD has FSR 2.0/2.2 but unfortunately testing has shown DLSS is better than it overall. FSR 3.0 is coming soon though. As for non RT performance I'm pretty sure in most games it rivals the 4080 that can cost anything from £150-400 more (depending on model you buy, more premium AIB models could cost close to a 4090 FE for instance). Question is can you justify that premium for the ray tracing and DLSS (Nvidia also has some additional software that may become useful for some)

something I find funny in the list of specs. 3080 listed in ultra when it recommends 12GB VRAM. Outside of the 12GB 3080 that I'm pretty sure are unicorns now the 3080 only has 10GB so that should be bumped up to a 3080 Ti at least and recommending a 7900 XTX for that on AMD's end is just absurd. To meet the same 12GB VRAM requirement with AMD you can drop to the 6700 XT (though that probably won't reach 60 FPS at 4K without the help of FSR). Well seeing it is an Nvidia feature title

you will probably want to go for an AIO cooler for a CPU like that. IIRC the only difference the 13900KF has compared to the 13900K is the lack of integrated graphics (usually not that big of a deal, unless you run into issues with your GPU) other than that it is still very much a 13900K and it is still going to use up to 253W (less when gaming) and get pretty toasty.
As for what AIO cooler to buy that can be tricky as it depends on so many factors but I hear you can't go wrong with Arctic's Liquid Freezer II series. Depending on what your case supports I'd go for one with as big a radiator as possible (they go up to 420mm)
Optional replacement: I would remove the fans out of the box and replace them with Arctic's P12 Max (120mm fans so supported on 120, 240 and 360mm radiator AIOs) which should further lower temperatures, just a heads up though, these fans can spin up to 3300 RPM so might want to create a custom fan curve that will prevent them from spinning that fast

something to take note of with that though is I'm not sure that CPU is exactly running at stock. Some parameters on XTU seem higher than they should be so no surprise air coolers will be throttling. Crazy how the 13900K reaches 100c on that workload yet the 7950X3D can remain cooler while consuming less power too (around 120W less if I'm not mistaken)

one of the biggest issues that seems to come from some AIOs lately is corrosion. Lian Li's Galahad being one of the most recent to suffer from issues relating to it (though I do believe it has been fixed, units affected are expected to RMA). A premium air cooler should still do a pretty good job with a 13900K/KF (not so sure about the 13900KS though) and as said earlier by Edmundo Studios once a fan goes they are pretty inexpensive to replace and far less hassle replacing too compared to a whole AIO unit

Open back/airflow allowing for sound leakage (to a certain point) and closed back/silent preventing a lot of noise leakage

I'm partial to the Fractal Design cases as I've used them in comparison to others in several studios over my ~20 years recording and have found them to do a better job as far as a low noise floor with ample cooling

the £50 air cooler I'm using for my 7950X3D seems to be doing a pretty good job all things considering trying to keep 16 cores over 2 CCD cool. Though with AMD they do things differently pushing the CPU effectively as much as can be afforded by the cooler. Possibly still reaches the temperature limits set by AMD under certain workloads but clock speeds will likely be higher for longer on an AIO I fully understand that much

some in game benchmarks I find aren't really a true show of how the game runs. Sometimes the benchmark covers the most demanding area which might only be explored occasionally with actual overall performance being considerably higher - looking at Forza Horizon 5's benchmark while in that city for most of it for one instance but there are probably other examples. Around 100 FPS at native 4K and extreme settings (no ray tracing) but outside that area I get up to 130 FPS

also, with Starfield I'm sorted with PC game pass but may consider buying the premium edition add on upgrade for £34.99 I think it was? Same with Forza Motorsport when it releases a little over a month after Starfield

for sure, what makes even less sense is the 7900X recommendation seeing as that is 12 cores split over two CCD. Pretty sure both recommended and ultra could have just done with 12700 (and newer 8 P core CPUs) for Intel and 5700X (and newer 8 core single CCD CPUs) for AMD. Still pretty extreme but that is toned down and about right. Only thing I can think of where Zen 4 is being recommended on AMD's side is due to DDR5 but like the SSD thing, they should specify this imo and it would also mean the 13700/13900 would be recommended since the Z790 chipset and 13th gen have a better memory controller and support for DDR5 vs 12th gen and Z690

1080p 60 fps ultra likely needs no more than a 5700X, 16GB DDR4, 6700 XT and a SATA SSD. Bump that up to 1440p and you'll be looking at 6800 and 4K is 7900 XTX right enough as that is the sort of FPS I get while roaming around Night City 50-70 FPS overall at ultra settings with no ray tracing or FSR active

hey, was wondering if anyone knew a fix for an issue with the xbox app not opening? I've tried everything at this point. None of the fixes I can find online seem to work for me. The xbox game bar itself opens fine, and microsoft store also opens, but the xbox app will display a black screen and then crash around 5s after startup. Very rarely it will get through and show me the main screen for the app, but crash immediately after. Would love to get some help on this since nothing seems to work.

Finally got everything installed that I wanted (for now) on the ROG Ally, so I can properly test that out today.

Quickly loaded up Spider-Man to see how that ran and Death Stranding and they're both super smooth. Definitely running those better than the Steam Deck.

The unit itself is lighter than the Steam Deck, but I find the SD more comfortable to hold. The auto-switch from desktop to gamepad controls isn't very reliable either, but thankfully it's easy and quick to do manually from the side menu.

Your budget will depend on what you can get. I bought a new PC recently for 1K at best buy that plays a lot of new games without any issues. Intel is good but price tags are higher then AMD. AMD works great for gaming. should get something with AMD Ryzen 7 or better to be able to play most games. You can look at the games you want to play and thier requirements to see what you really need.

Mine just arrived earlier, has full rubber grips which is nice. The grips cover a bit more of the controller compared to the stellar shift one. I find the rubber grips a bit more comfortable so glad they included them

One annoying thing I’ve noticed on SF6 PC version is when you upgrade your GPU driver the app doesn’t automatically compile shaders again when starting up the game which leads to a completely unplayable mess. Was just trying to figure out what was going wrong with my system and turned out I just needed to manually recompile the shaders via the settings option that is very well hidden and needs to be manually enabled every single time you upgrade the driver, for Nvidia that’s pretty often. Just a note if anyone else has the same issue

Yeah, I’m getting worse performance on the new Nvidia driver as well for SF6. Maybe there was a patch in between but not as good as when I was playing at launch. I guess it will be ironed out over time.

It's weird. I ran the benchmark for SF6 and I get a score of 100/100 performance but in the actual game it's almost unplayable now on the new driver. Ran some benchmarks on other games and those are fine still.

Most of the microsoft store games are hidden and encrypted. You can try running (Win + R) Shell:AppFolder, find the app and make a shortcut to put where you want

i’m not sure if this is the correct place to ask this but i’m trying to run forza horizon 4 on my pc through game pass. i had tried it out through cloud play and the game ran just fine but the graphics were a bit laggy, which is expected from cloud play. but i ended up installing it fully and it says it should run great on my pc but when i hit play, it just brings up a window with the initial loading screen and, doesn’t load for about a minute, and the window closes. i’m confused as to why cloud play worked so well but now it doesn’t even though it’s fully installed.

what I find funny is there was a claim going about recently that AMD are preventing rival upscaling solutions on their feature titles and I just had to laugh at that. Nvidia still has more feature titles I'm pretty sure where DLSS is exclusive to that game, Watch Dogs Legion being one such title but of course, no one bats eyes towards Nvidia, do they? Seems they can do no wrong even when 12vhpwr cables are melting blaming it on "user error"...

FSR has 4 options (Quality, balanced, performance and ultra performance) with each decreasing the internal resolution and at 1080p I'm pretty sure I'd go no lower than quality as that would be 720p internally

I have fallout 4 with all of its dlcs on xbox(Main game on game pass an dlcs paid), but when i go on pc game pass app, it only allows mw to download base game through game pass, and the dlcs are paid, even though i own them. Im not sure as what to do to fix this, and if this is not an issue, that sucks.

Fallout 4 on pc is different from fallout 4 console. The game isnt a play anywhere title. also there is another achivement list for pc version of fallout 4

No its not. Fallout 4 states its playable on xb1 and series console not pc. There is a fallout 4 pc version page. The dlcs is for whatever platform u brought it for either xbox or pc not both. If u have game pass ultimate then u have access to fallout 4 on pc. U will need to buy the dlcs again if u want to play the dlcs

what? no, there will be no need to. 4090 is the most powerful GPU available right now. Even if Starfield doesn't have DLSS support in any form it should handle the game pretty good. I said this only yesterday (see screenshot snip I took) and would say this applies pretty well again. Also, you'd just be wasting money at this point buying a 7900 XTX. AMD feature titles generally run well on all hardware. Nvidia has been far sketchier in the past with non Nvidia hardware in their feature titles so honestly, I think all will be ok

only upper hand AMD cards may have is an actual good implementation of FSR 2 and perhaps even support for FSR 3 but FSR 2 is supported on all GPUs (again, unlike DLSS being specific to Nvidia RTX) the only exception may be FSR 3 (could be limited to RX 7000 series GPUs) but not a whole lot is known about it still so I'd just be speculating on how it will be implemented

I've seen both AMD and Nvidia claim this yet I don't see games updating to support this tech by the bucket load. Sure there are a lot of games being supported as of late but with how easy they made it sound I thought this would be like one of those major shake ups

think the only requirement for a game to support DLSS or FSR is the inclusion of TAA anti aliasing seeing as when you select FSR at any level in game options tend to then grey out the anti aliasing option and have it set to TAA. I haven't forgot about Intel's XeSS but afaik without Intel hardware I believe it is a little more dated compared to both AMD and Nvidia's most recent offerings

It's part of UE4 now so games like Jedi survivor should have it there. Some users have made mods to get DLSS working without too much effort on games like RE4 and 8. The Nvidia sponsored titles mostly include Xess, DLSS and FSR so not really a good look for AMD

I heard that Xess is still better than FSR2 from DF but not really tried it. DLSS2 is much better than FSR2 though

I wonder if Bethesda could work on a generic, in game upscaler similar to Unreal Engine's as in game/engine upscalers will probably beat all the additional ones. Apparently that is the case with Ghostwire Tokyo (I know that game is run on a very different engine etc) but if there was that option and it was superior and specifically optimized for that game and engine while not favouring any specific hardware it would be the best outcome for all, no?

also, I'm still pretty sure Nvidia have more DLSS exclusive titles where no other implementation has been added compared to AMD. My take on all this. Someone's article/video has been blown way out of proportion

I really think AMD should have stuck with just the X800 SKU for X3D. No 5600X3D, 7900X3D or 7950X3D. With both the 5600X3D and 7900X3D you don't even have full CCDs and that'll mean slightly less cache (from the CPU side) compared with the 8 core CCDs and the 7950X3D just seems to be in a weird spot with it's non X3D counterpart, 7950X) being a workstation monster. 5800X3D and 7800X3D made the most sense imo
