only time I plan to upgrade my CPU is when AMD announce their Zen 4 V-Cache CPUs. 5800X3D can keep pace with Intel's 13th gen offerings a 7800X3D should do even better and paired with a 7900 XTX it will be some system!

might even make a return to an AIO cooler for the CPU too. Got a feeling I'll need it if Zen 4 still has a tendency to try and reach 95c (in certain workloads)

The case I went for was designed just for air-cooling cause I just don't wanna deal with water at all for a first build. So I should be good for thermals. Both the gpu and cpu are getting air directly from 2 180mm fans from the front.

fair point, my back up air cooler would be Arctic's Freezer 34 esports duo. Have one in my current system and keeps my 5600X pretty cool though I do worry if it is good enough for waht may be a ~170W CPU (the 7800X3D)

105-170W stock and even more if you enable PBO, up to 242W on the 7950X iirc though idk who would enable PBO as it doesn't really improve results by enough to justify the stress it puts on the cooler from my testing on my 5600X and it tops out at around 112W while under loads like cinebench r23 being able to reach 80c, maybe a little more. It will also exceed 70c in games too where it maybe wouldn't otherwise without PBO enabled

leave vsync off but enable enhanced sync on your GPU if you are exceeding your monitor's refresh rate in FPS. It should continue to allow a tear free experience. I have that set globally but can also be set on a game by game basis, though all things considered it will be rare to see any games trigger it on my end as I game at 4K 240Hz and even at 4K have a tendency to set graphics options to max (minus ray tracing options) 😄

it will likely be the overclocking potential that allows it to go further. Something that will need testing by the user and will vary somewhat. I'd certainly hope so for the likely premium Asus are demanding on their products that they overclock well otherwise, yeah I'll be fine with a reference design that likely does all of what a 7900 XTX can do but as much as £400 cheaper than Asus ROG. Also, why would a 3rd 8 pin cable be added to some of these GPUs if they don't intend to push things further than reference? would be a waste of additional power

(7 days + hours) I believe there will be a point when media embargo lifts as per usual around the time of a new GPU launch a day or so before but from what I have read the AIB cards come a week or so later so we'll only have the reference "MBA" designs to go off initially

there is talk of Nvidia dropping the price on the 4080 around the time AMD release the 7900 XTX. TechPowerUp done a poll on how much users would pay for a 4080 and it came back at $700-800 which is fair, personally I selected the $800 and that would have made it very competitive against a GPU priced at $999 that as AMD even put it is meant to be the direct competitor to the 4080. AMD would have to then consider dropping prices or risk losing potential sales for being too expensive

it is an upgrade I have in mind but saving it a little longer if it can be done. On the other hand back on the GPUs the 4080 does lack 8GB on the VRAM vs the 7900 XTX but it is using faster GDDR6X while AMD uses Infinity Cache to back up their slower GDDR6. Will actually be interested to see how the whole memory bandwidth game plays out between the two

The main thing to look for is clearance for the GPU to fit in the case and some ITX builds use small form factor power supplies which are more expensive than ATX.

only solution AMD would have if they don't want to copy Nvidia with the dedicated die would be to have GPUs with even more CUs since the RA's = CUs (96 CUs - 96 RA on the 7900 XTX) but that would be easier said than done I'd imagine unless of course AMD expand the chiplet design of GPUs into allowing a second full GPU die, in theory would allow up to 192 CU/RA but even with it being a chiplet GPU and AMD claiming they are cheaper I would think such a GPU would not come in cheap or be very energy efficient, at least the first generation or two but give it the +50% performance per watt treatment AMD tend to do and before too long it could become a real monster of a GPU and chiplets very much staying with Nvidia and Intel trying to get in on it too

RT die: 96 Ray Accelerators. Wouldn't it just be doing the exact same thing as AMD have already got going, just separated and technically that could lead to even worse performance?

there's a reason you don't just see more cores added to processors, this is the same thing. bigger number does not automatically mean better

you get exponential wattage increase, exponential heat output, exponential cost on both manufacturing and on the end-product's MSRP, and a negligible increase in performance on RT tasks

the focus isn't on Raster performance AMD's competitive in that space per dollar

RT is laughably pitiful with the RA being on each CU

it's not going to automatically get better because the CU on the new silicon would still be the same. unless they specifically engineered it to be different

but, at that point you have to ask what's the point of the extra CU

what you're basically asking AMD to do is what NVIDIA did with Fermi

and it did not end well

Should they find a way to decouple the two then I'd worry AMD would go slack on the CU/general compute and raster performance in favour of ray tracing and in the end follow in the footsteps of Nvidia. Look how small the leap in general compute/raster was between the GTX 10 series and RTX 20 series for instance

I'd say the 3080 Ti is a great buy at that price but with only 12GB VRAM it may hold it back somewhat especially if you plan to game at 4K but it is an entry to Nvidia's higher end cards (3090 series) without paying the additional cost on them. Besides the 24GB VRAM on a 3090 there isn't a whole lot else you are missing on a 3080 Ti in terms of specs

I like how in depth techpowerup go in their testing so would strongly go by their reviews once live. Biggest concern I have with the 7900 series is if it has the same transient power issues the 6900 series suffered and if so it may be a problem for some since iirc there were 20ns spikes where the 6900 XT would hit or even go over 600W power draw. Oddly the 6800 XT was unaffected by this issue, even across the same models that exhibited this behaviour on the 6900 XT and later 6950 XT

Preformance wise I'd say 6900 of course but if you wanna save that hundred the 6800 isn't that far behind. If anything look up reviews for both and see if it's the gap is in Preformance is worth the 100

that may be a bug. Couple of reviewers already believe that to be the case as idle power consumption was also pretty high

one good thing about both Hardware Unboxed and techpowerup's reviews is both seem to confirm 6800 XT to 7900 XTX is around 50% difference and for not much more power I'm very impressed. At stock my 6800 XT Red Devil uses 280W, if I use the power slider it can use up to 322W. Compare that with the 7900 XTX ~355W. Obviously real power draw may vary but that is only between 33-75W more for all that additional performance... Nvidia would have us paying $1500 for something like that!

I was able to hop into High on Life after allowing access (usual prompt thingy with most games downloaded from Microsoft Store that aren't first party titles I guess) and then having it download what appeared to be the whole game again but must have been a verifying of the files. After that there was nothing more to it.

well aware of the 20ms spikes thing and have seen reviews on the power draw but most of them haven't painted it quite as bad as this. How on earth is 2x 8 pin pulling so much power anyway when technically the most it should be able to pull is 375W, at least under spec.

also this makes me wonder how bad the same spikes and sustained power draw are on both the 4080 and 4090 since they both use 12vhpwr connector and iirc that is rated for up to 600W
