I might have a dead SSD and HDD from my old build. After going M.2 I pretty much ditched the SATA drives in a box somewhere with little to no care. You need to use an Xinput wrapper to map the controls. There is DS4 windows which does this

PS4 controller uses Direct input API by default and most of the new games use Xinput so the wrapper will basically emulate the controller inputs from the xbox one pad

the cost of the X670E boards are ridiculous and dropping down to B650E does cost a lot less, if you want all the latest features you are still going to be spending close to the cost of a decent X670E board and then there is DDR5 RAM that likely slaps another £200+ on top of all that. Easily £1000+ on the CPU and related parts alone

It will be there in the BIOs to enable if it’s 8th gen intel or above. If you want to enable it for windows 11 you also need secure boot enabled as well to be “supported”

You can't directly compare i5 to i7 based on GHz. The reason is because the i7 has more cores than the i5 and that provides greater power even at comparable speed in GHz.

Also an Intel CPU of a later generation (google the model number to see what generation of Intel Core it is) will have more power for comparable speed / core count than an older one.

It should be fine. I'll let you know that's not the newest generation of Intel Core, but it's only a couple generations behind the cutting edge. It's a quad core CPU, and has a nice high maximum speed.
However... to run stuff like Ableton or other productivity / media creation apps on it, you're gonna want at least 16 GB of RAM in my opinion.

So just look out for that.

TBH even for games I'm not sure 8 GB of RAM is a great choice these days.

On a laptop? It's not always easy. On a desktop, it's very easy. Open the case, unclip the existing RAM and put in other RAM which has more capacity. You need to get the right kind, but plugging it in is not hard at all.

Some of them even have the RAM soldered on the board, can't be changed. Some of them have a panel you can open to swap it out, but it's just that bit more delicate than a desktop PC and I couldn't advise it. Some of them you need to strip down the whole thing. No way to estimate cost, it depends on too many factors. My best advice is to find a laptop with enough RAM to start with. Upgrading laptops is a bad deal.

pricing on AMD's boards is a bit high and if you plan to game at 4K there is little reason to upgrade your CPU if you have anything fairly recent. Even my 5600X can near match these new CPUs at half the price or less in 4K. Most benchmarks are done at 1080p but 1440p is somewhat of a middleground

Not really, first thing you want to check is if the board and case meet the same standard, usually ATX or MATX. Some of the OEM systems like dell use their own proprietary setups which would not work interchangeably.

and I run both my CPU (5600X) and GPU (6800 XT) completely stock. Performs great at 4K. Would be even better if I could learn to stop playing games at maxed settings but it can be very time consuming finding what settings can be dropped that don't impact immersion too much while giving a nice 10%+ performance boost. I don't even see why devs add some of these settings that are visually indistinguishable from the setting below it at times. Think SSR Psycho quality on Cyberpunk 2077 for example. Huge performance cost hardly noticeable difference in image quality

one thing I almost forgot to make you aware of regarding the 6900 XT is that it has some transient issues. There are times where it may use as much as 600W or so for milliseconds but it may be enough to trip some power supplies if not adequately rated. Probably butchered what I was trying to say but someone with a clearer understanding of that stuff can perhaps clear it up and word it better than I did there

I've only bought used PC hardware once and that was my 6800 XT Red Devil. Bought it from CeX for £1200 back in June 2021 around the peak of the shortage, scalper and cryptocurrency horror show... I paid way too much I know but here's hoping the 7900 XTX I'll be buying for maybe £200 less corrects that

How can you tell, exactly? Just from looks? Or is there some kind of usage statistic you can check?

not sure tbh but it looked in spotless condition. Sure, a quick clean could have done the job but this was like new-new. I opened the box and it had a new kind of smell to it. Though at the time of purchase the 6800 XT would have only been some 7 months or so in production (November 2020 release)

don't really have a case in mind right now but I'd be looking at something with good airflow that is ready for future pc builds featuring larger GPUs so perhaps even a full tower. Got over 6 years out of my current case (Corsair Carbide 400C) so would hope for similar or better yet. Not sure I'm too bothered about having a window that will allow me to peek into my system, most cases these days use tempered glass and I'm a bit worried about that

huh? not sure I get what you mean by that. Though from what I hear the 7900 XTX is around 10% off a 4090 in rasterization performance... 10% for $700 or so cheaper while being more efficient and having no fire hazard power connections

meh, Nvidia were ahead of AMD from the start with ray tracing. As far as I see it ray tracing is optional and besides trying it out on games that add support for it or new games that release with it, it isn't something I personally keep enabled as you know due to the sheer performance cost. I'd rather drop all those ray traced settings and game at maxed, non-rt settings where I'll probably get 3-4x the performance. 60-80 fps vs 26 fps I know what I'd pick all day long

the issue is how AMD handles RT

Ray Accelerators are a part of the standard CU

so they share computational load

they could have leapt forward in performance if they'd have utilized the chiplet design for RT as well

since it's split between core and shader

having a dedicated RT die would leapfrog them in RT performance

good for APU in lower-end stuff

awful on a discrete design

that it could and no doubt they will explore that. Found it odd how they only made the chiplet design for the memory side tbh. I had hope it might have been the equivalent to 2x 6900 XT which would have allowed for 160 RT cores or whatever AMD market them as (160CUs - 160 RT cores)
