Okay so I don't know whether I'm simply stupid or is Xbox just doing false advertising? I bought a series S for myself and on the box it says it has 512 gigs of storage, however when I check the storage devices in the settings it says I only have 364 gigs of storage.

Every storage drive has less actual usable space than what it's advertised as having. The link above explains why.

Then for things like consoles, you lose some more space because of the operating system and any reserved space that needs.

the expansion card are nvme drives that could play optimized series games and store them. any other external drive can only store optimized games but not play them

Series consoles use NVMe storage, which is a fast storage device. Modern games (Series enhanced titles) need this fast storage to run.

You can use a USB HDD/SSD for non-Series enhanced games, but for Series enhanced titles you need either the internal storage, or the storage expansion cards.
