Biggest problem is drivers. The Bootcamp program makes Windows work because it has adaptive drivers for Mac hardware for Windows software. Linux might be a bit trickier since different distros use different kinds of drivers

Looking on sites like ebay and such for only the controller, you will get people selling controllers, they might not even have had a 360, search for an xbox 360 bundle that includes controllers on like facebook those controllers are more likely to be genuine and may be able to be sold on the side
