They can help to reduce bullying (or reduce the number of things a kid may be bullied for).

Stops kids fighting or bullying over kids who don't have the latest fashion trends and expensive shoes.

Or kids having expensive clothing stolen/damaged.

Going off of my Irish family-in-law, over there you can still tell whether you wear the cheap version of the uniform or the expensive one and get bullied based on that. (They have to buy their own from what I understood). If its supplied by the school then sure, I agree.
